This is a great example of how we often see something like an eq move and we think "no way, I can't do that..." Being willing to make huge moves when they are needed, is once of the hardest things to overcome when starting out. The compression made a huge difference in both color and presence.
Phenomenal work again brother! You're no short of resourcefulness in the midst of a situation. A true audio doctor - finding a remedy and always making that sweet lemonade outta sour (yet organic) lemons 😅
I like your channel, bravo. A nice lesson that's missing in depth, is how to make vocals (especially female) to stand in the mix, without loosing others instruments that are needed to be heard clearly ( like a lead guitar maybe). Adding in vocals thickness, EQing properly in mids, in side...generally in depth lesson!
Maybe they used the foam ball thingy on the microphone during recording thats why it sounded muffled? This is really similar sound to what it does based on experience using one of those.
HUGE difference. Nice work. When the vocal started, I was thinking "time to get out the ProQ3 and Pro MB". Lol. I guessed that there would be another comp toward the end - then a touch of verb and delay. I didn't see the CLA coming though. I also half-expected a Kiive Distinct Pro in there too for a little more saturation. Great video. Thanks, Rhys.
Can you do a video about how to get a job in music production, as a producer, mixing engineer. essentially how to survive in music industry, would be very helpful and mind-opening for people...Im an undergraduate stududent by the way and I'm about to graduate so I'm quite worried T-T
Really loving the content you are making so thank you! Could you speak to that super stuttering/sizzle-y (terrible term and questionable spelling, my apologies) sibilance sound on "Ssss-unny day" that is happening even in the unprocessed vocal track? What can cause that? A Mic or something happening on the way in? I also had this on one of my tracks and almost tore my hair out trying to figure out what was the cause.
Yeah definitely, but a rode and a Neumann should never sound muffled unless there is something wrong with them 😅 proximity will make it more bass heavy!
Dude where can we listen to released artist's music you've mixed / mastered? All of the songs you tend to work on are head-bop jams ❤🤩 maybe share a Rhyse's playlist of their gems if bands allow? 🤩
@@spinlightstudios You got yourself a sub. I've been doing this for years, and had I not come across this video I have zero clue how I was going to finish this track. Simply amazing, thank you.
I can't relaly hear the actual vocal mic buddy quality with the music over. do you have the logic project where we can download and see it in action with the mixed vocals?
Yes, correct. Performance was recorded with 2 mics. The one for acoustic guitar is quite Ok and voice bleeding is workable but the one for the voice (ribbon mic) has too much acoustic bleeding
Really curious about the backstory of that vocal recording. What mic was used under which circumstances. Sounds like a wet SM57 stuffed between two sofa pillows... 😂
@@ERFaep hmm There are plenty of places to get stems probably. I have some stems on my store for a song - there is also a full mix tutorial for those stems on YT that’s free to watch. Should be a link to both my store and the tutorial in the description above if you want to check it out
@@spinlightstudios Ye it has to be right, either that or something very similar at least. It has that sound of a really old, moving coil dynamic mic, that needs to have the coil replaced (as well as a good grill cleaning). After a few years the top end starts to roll off of them as they fill up with spit and dirt, and eventually, if left to get really bad, sounds like you've got socks in your mouth when you speak into it! xD
Hope this is helpful to anyone struggling with a muffled vocal sound!
Is this good for a muffled sm7b?

Thanks! That’s it! Sometimes it doesn’t look right, but it sounds right 🫣 mix with your ears and not your eyes isn’t that what they say 🫠
Some of the best mixers in the world use CLA Vocals on almost every mix. I love it too man.
I mean… it’s CLA 😉
Wow, a 7db boost on a tilt shelf is huge 🤯 But its definitely what the track needs. Cool stuff as usual mate!
Gotta do what you gotta do haha

one of the best tutorials on youtube👍👍

Could be!
Free mode on the HF multi band - that's nice! Enjoying the channel.
Thanks!
Sounds like night and day. Great tutorial. This is definitely expert level!
Thanks a ton!
omg this raw vocal sounded terrible haha. You really fixed it. Nice trick with CLA vocals as the finisher, there's something cool in it
The performance wasn’t bad! Just whatever was happening with the recording was muffling it terribly!
@@spinlightstudios yeah I meant the recording, the vocal performance was great

Definitely could have got some saturation in there, it’s all taste in the end!

wow you cleaned up those vocals really well!

Thanks! I think sometimes it’s just how the microphone reacts to sibilance, potentially too close to the capsule?
Hope this helps! Love the content keep it up
Thanks mate! 🙏🏼
I would love a Neumann Mic… but I got a RODE mic… proximity and gain play a part doesn’t it?
Yeah definitely, but a rode and a Neumann should never sound muffled unless there is something wrong with them 😅 proximity will make it more bass heavy!

A band from Germany called Golden Fin!

Sounds like they used a cardboard instead of a pop filter during tracking.
😅
Do you know how to clean up muffled vocals on BandLab ?
Sorry, I’ve never used Bandlab!

Sounds like some sang into an SM7B! Haha
