Sober for 5 Years | How To Quit Drinking

  • I am regularly asked how to quit drinking alcohol or how to be sober. The part that is hard to explain is, there is no one thing you can do to quit drinking. It is more of a cumulation of many small things that add up to much more. Quitting drinking also takes a certain mind set, and you have to be ready. Overcoming an addiction is not easy, but it is 100% worth while, and nothing worthwhile in life is easy, ever. I really do wish any one struggling with addiction success beating it and I hope this video helps. Thank you for watching.

I found your videos about 2 years ago when I was in active addiction. The first one I watched was your 1 Year Sober video. It helped me so much. Today I have 219 days of continuous sobriety. Thank you for your insight and congratulations on 5 years!

Congrats on 5 years, I also just celebrated my 1 year of sobriety on October 25. My GF & I were both heavy drinkers for 12 years. My GF doctor’s told her repeatedly that if she didn’t quit drinking that she would die. She ended up coming down with cirrhosis and after a long 8 year battle she finally succumbed to her sickness and passed away in May of this year. After seeing all of the pain and suffering that she went through is what made me wake up and realize that I could be next if I also didn’t quit drinking. It took everything that I had not to drink after her passing as all that I wanted to do was drink my life away so that I could join her in Heaven. I literally just wanted to die! I’m feeling better now but still break down from time to time. In honor of her I won’t ever drink again! Keep it up if not for you then for Lexi as you wouldn’t ever want her to experience all of the pain that she would go through watching you slowly die from alcohol. Stay strong!

Been sober for 17 months after 30 years of drinking and I feel amazing. Wish I would have done this earlier in life but better late than never. I feel good and I wake up a little happier every day. Taking it one day at a time but its worth it and I've lost weight and my skin looks incredible. Its amazing and I have no desire to go back to that shit!!!!

Have a stepbrother who was the wildest, most functional alcoholic, & he became sober. But not before losing his freedoms. He went from top sniper to a dishonorable discharge, then onto the biggest mistake of his life. He went through many different AA meetings before one hit for him. Went on to start his own successful business that he’s been addicted to for over 15 years, & yet, the guy has never lost his hyper intensity. He’s living proof that anyone can free themselves of the cycle.

Way 2 go. I was sober for 4 years and been messing up lately because of problems in life, depression, and not having anyone to talk to. I am been going back to the insanity thinking and trying to control my drinking. Honestly I been drinking because it helps me remember and enjoy memories of the past when times were good and help me escape present day sadness.
I appreciate your video because it do remind me that I am refunding my natural character for temporary pleasure and misery back.

I know this is not NEARLY as bad as alcoholism but I struggle pretty heavily with snacking. It has been something I've constantly done as a child and now being an adult I realize how engrained it is in me. It's like a ritual, if I have a bad day all I want to do is eat something that is terrible for me. It makes me feel good in the moment but afterwards I feel terrible and my body pays for it, along with my social life, which then effects my mental health. I'll just be so irritable or low energy I can't deal with people and it drives them away. I honestly feel like a robot who just has to do the same thing each day. I know how bad it is for me yet I will continue to buy it. I'm hoping I can make a change.
Your videos about addiction are super helpful so thank you for making them. The thought of being our best self is starting to ignite the NEED for change in my life. I'm tired of who I am and what I do so I'm finally deciding to STICK with my decision to be strong and become a healthier, happier me. I've already cut out soda for water but I have a long path ahead of me. Here's to hoping we can all beat our illnesses.

You’re amazing congratulations on over 5 years sobriety! I started watching your videos a couple years back. My name is Jill I am 23 years old and have been an active alcoholic for 5 years! Today I’m over 6 months without alcohol and hard drugs the longest I’ve ever gone, I totally get what you mean between wanting to change and trying to change… I was very in denial about my addiction because I was so young but continuously kept loosing everything that was most important to me due to drinking. I’m very thankful to be here because I also don’t think I would be around if I continued the way I was going. First time I went to rehab I was 19 but I was doing it for other people and not myself. After a family member passed away I just knew if I didn’t stop I wouldn’t make it. I totally felt that pink cloud affect at first, depression followed for a while after but after getting on all the right medication and a better diet I feel alive again. I’m currently “trying” to quit smoking cigarettes and weed but one thing at a time I suppose :) I’m getting very eager for my 1 year but one day at a time. I have a lot of shame and embarrassment still but also take pride in my sobriety, I know I can do it now because I have to. It’s hard looking back at the person I became but I’m working towards becoming a better person everyday. I’m definitely a big coke and coffee drinker, I tried the near beers before but I relapsed after tasting it. Some days I forget I’m an alcoholic which can be nice but also scary. I’ve tried to quit more times than I can count but this time it finally stuck. Thank you for sharing your story it was very helpful to me, all the best to you on your sober journey :)

Congratulations on 5 years! The humility in your videos and honesty is what people need to hear and see. Without pride from addiction fueling your ego it’s comes off very sincere in your words. I’ve never had an addiction really to alcohol mine was more so ego & identity issues with the want to be the center of attention so that fed my partying life which didn’t help working in the entertainment industry because addiction in many forms is so easy to grasp. I felt I was on top of the world working side by side with huge celebrities. My sobriety was being able to walk away from that life after a DUI with injury. One night of drinking nearly cost someone’s life because of my selfish choices. Thankfully that person survived. Having a mom have huge career in the legal system in my city, made me have no fear or care because I got out of a lot. That made me have no fear until that one incident I didn’t get a handout. I was charged and went to jail. That was my lesson in reality. Now more than 14 years later I’m happy being me and living a pretty boring life 😅. I choose dogs and camping over people for solitude in nature.

So true about the ‘sober secret society’. Over the last year I’ve gotten involved with skydiving. The sport has a huge drinking culture, but surprisingly I’ve run into a lot of people who jump that are sober, instantly had a bond with them. I don’t belong to any big sobriety community, but I do find it interesting to find how many people out there that are actually sober and just really low key about it. When I was fucked up, the only sober people I remember were the ones that were preachy and in your face about it.

I have a friend who was an alcoholic for decades, until he tripped while drunk and ended up in hospital for 10 days, which included needing his heart shocked back into rhythm, and discovering blood clots. 10 days of hard thinking, and no alcohol, and three and a half years later he has not touched a drop.

Great video and thanks for sharing your story. It helps more than you know. By the way, your lighting is actually done well, kinda that "cinematic" look that all the pro TH-camr's use. Nice work man!

Sober three years this month after relapsing repeatedly for 10 years. Keep quitting until you quit. That's my advice. Even if you quit hundreds of times. Keep quitting until you quit. That is not my original motto, but it's what I did and I heard a TH-camr say "keep quitting until you quit" and that's what the trick is and was for me. It's the rare person who doesn't relapse. Just quit all over again. God bless.

Thanks dude. One of my old sponsors told me once, “I can fit everything I’ve worked for and gotten back, my family wife and kids in a shot glass. All it takes is one drink and it’s all gone.”
Always thought that made a lot of sense.

Yesterday was my 6 months sober from alcohol 🥲🤍 I detoxed in the hospital back in January. I APPARENTLY found your detox video before I went in (I don’t remember watching it). Just stumbled upon your COVID video that I had (apparently, again lol) saved in my watch later. How cool that it’s 7 months later, I have 6 months of sobriety, and I get to watch your 5 years video 🤍 life is funny like that. Even though I don’t remember watching your detox video, obviously it helped me prepare to go into detox myself, so thank you 🥹🤍

That's great everything you said is spot on I quit yesterday it's not my first rodeo. Remembering how much more productive and having much better moods veruses waking up to a hangover and still finishing the rest of bottle sitting by the bedside is enough. I read a ton so I would wake and whatever I would read I had to really make an effort to recall and my brain would just feel like it was shrinking. Taking vitamins or replenishing vitamins through food definitely helps especially B complex. Lord knows alcohol is total havoc on the body and brain functions. So youtube and videos like this was my AA and my first day was a breeze and it will be the rest of my life thank you for sharing and assisting.
