Congratulations on being first person to actually do a teardown of the FTW3 as well as discuss the thermals. I freakin hate it when the "popular" reviewers simply discuss the benchmarks and just say something like that its "fairly quiet".
Fking A! been trying to weigh up what to go with and theres no side by side review of any of them, Have found the ASUS Strix OC 3090 leading the limited "reviewed" pack but nothing that lists all side by side. Really frustrating, have cash in hand ready to go - everything is selling out have no informed reviews of what's on offer or what's edging ahead. It's as if they want us to buy blind and hope for the best..
Just wanted to point this out for anyone referencing this video for a teardown to waterblock their 3090... I killed two of my FTW3 3090's trying to put EKWB waterblocks on them. I've built about 5 water cooled rigs and never had failure like this ever. The issue is seemingly that the PCB has a weak spot and very prone to failure if the PCB flexes. The putty that's used on these EVGA cards are so damn difficult to work with when removing the stock cooler. My recommendation is to pre-heat the card (use a heat gun on LOW) to help soften up the putty before working at shimmying it off. Do your BEST to not flex the card when removing the cooler. Good luck yall.
Those copper heat tubes are actually a really cool addition to the backplate! I did not know that was there. Also, neat to see that it comes with termal pads already installed on the back :)
Nvidia tried to make TSMC lower their price for their 7nm node, but they didn't budge. Then Nvidia decided to cheap out and use the cheaper node by Samsung, but the yelds for 7nm of the Samsung node are not good, so they got this 8N, that is basically a process built on Samsung's 10nm node. At least this is what I heard, there are a couple of articles about this from a few months ago.
Would have like some advanced measurements such as HxL of the board for those of us who plan on liquid cooling. Also, are you planning on doing a video in OC performance between the XC3 vs the FTW3? That would be greatly appreciated.
I'm probably going to have to replace my pads. As someone who has never done anything like this before, I'm nervous tinkering around in a $3000+ piece of hardware that will likely void its warranty and also require me to do everything perfectly or I could make it worse than it already is. I suspect it's my backplate pads that need replacing, so that looks easier.
Hey man I need to put my air cooler back on my card removing the water block, which pads would you go with for this to get it back up and running. Love your stuff dude.
I've still been posting your channel on all the bigger channels I visit because I really enjoy the power modding and all of what you're doing. There's also the fact that you've found a way to stop at least some of these cards from constant crashing. I legit think that needs to get out to help those experiencing these issues with their brand new 3080's...
I am wishing someone actually had a good video on this. I thermal padded and pasted this card tonight. Previously the card was at 94-96 degrees while mining at a specific clock setting. After doing paste and pads at 2mm in most sections and 1mm in other sections the card is at 110 degrees while mining. This is a huge disappointment.
Thanks so much for this video, I don't think I would have had the balls to open up the card without it! I used Gelid GP-Ultimate 15W/mK, 2mm pads throughout + the 1mm you suggested. When I sealed it up and checked, I found that the row of components next to the 1mm pads you used, the pads were loose. I re-opened and applied an extra 0.5 mm pad on each of those rows. The results, well, I am quite pleased. See here, the first card on nicehash is the one I replaced the pads on, the second, is a card which is unmodified: GeForce RTX 3090 DaggerHashimoto: 115.98 MH/s Status Mining Temp. 58ºC VRAM T. 92ºC Load 100% MemCtrl Load 100% Fan 66% Power 270W Efficiency 0.43 MH/J

I definitely could not run it in medium mode, fans would have been 100%. Possibly could have fitted a 3mm instead of the 2mm + 0.5, but was being cautious not to bulk it out/stretch the PCB.
Hi Paul... I need some help... I have changed my pads now 3times and I can get the temps down... I am using the GELID 3mm on the outside, then the 1mm next to the 3mm and then 2mm next to the GPU.... The side where the HDMI is located I added .5 to the 1mm so its now 1.5mm because I could see its not touching. On the backplate I am using 2.5mm.... Is this what your doing?
