This Canceled Daredevil Game Could've Been Awesome! | Daredevil: The Man Without Fear Retrospective

- In this video, I do an extensive examination on the cancelled Daredevil game which includes many new details that I learned from anonymous sources. For example, we'll look at storyboards, FMV cutscenes, concept art, and discuss other design ideas regarding the game. Thanks to a recently leaked build, I also got to play through some of the levels myself, which we'll explore together.
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is a cancelled PS2/Xbox game that was based on the comics. It was set to release alongside the Ben Affleck movie in 2003, but its development suffered many setbacks and it was cancelled in 2004.
If you'd like to try the build for yourself, you'll need to use a PS2 emulator. I personally like PCSX2, and the link below takes you to the download for it:
pcsx2.net/
The next link takes you to HiddenPalace.org, which contains the download for the playable build itself (Note: the parenthesis at the end of the link isn't being included in the hyperlink, leading to errors. When you paste the link, be sure to add the closing parenthesis to reach the actual page):

Just wanted to let you all know that I had to make some unfortunate cuts to the original video. It was brought to my attention that the music in the leaked build isn't actually original to Daredevil, and it instead comes from the game City of Heroes. This makes a lot of my commentary on the music irrelevant, so I felt it was best to cut those sections out. More specifically, I cut out the:
- main menu music around the 8 minute mark
- the sewer ambience around the 48 minute mark
- and the music portion of the audio section around the 1 hour 30 minute mark
So if there are any awkward cuts around those times, that's why and I apologize.
Sorry for the mix-up. Thank you to those of you who brought it to my attention!
Sad to see this game never make the light of day back then; maybe with the tech we have now, the game can be remade from the ground up with a lot of those original ideas, even though it'll be a different development team handling it.
@@randomguy1912 I imagine modern hardware could provide a really incredible daredevil game. Everything 5000ft wanted to accomplish with their daredevil game and then some. I desperately hope someone takes a crack at it in the next few years. Im surprised nobody has tried since this game
I'll always admire your sincerity towards your work. You're one of those youtubers who genuinely deserve more respect and audience support. Keep up the good work man. Your videos are one of the most consistent one when it comes to quality.
@@theperspective4357 Thank you! That really means a lot to me, and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me. I’ll work to maintain that same level of quality :)
Happy 60 years to the Man Without Fear! So cool to see this cancelled game and learn more about it.
me too.
The original two hulk games on ps2 were fantastic please cover them at some point
I agree and I plan to at some point! Hulk and F4 need some videos
@@alwaysnerdyretros I remember playing the old Fantastic 4 ps2 game with my brother as a kid. Looking forward to the vid.
@@alwaysnerdyretros about time Fantastic 4 need a video.
The movie game was okay Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction was like perfect
Would love to see a triple-A Daredevil game with in-depth combat and parkour system, as you traverse a smaller scale environment of Hell’s Kitchen, sewers, and numerous buildings
Insomniac needs to hurry up and give DD his own game. Also been a while man how are you doing?
Insomniac or even just anyone at this point lol. I've been good, thanks for asking! Still busily working on upcoming videos :)
@@alwaysnerdyretros keep up the good work
I didn't even think of that. This would be an easy win for insomniac. I'd prefer them make this instead of Wolverine. We already had a pretty good Wolverine game in Origins.
Daredevil would suit naughty dogs style alot more than insomniac
Insomniac will make it where half the time you're not even playing as Daredevil like their Spiderman games. Another studio needs to get it.
always love when alwaysnerdy uploads , always staying consistent with the quality. these videos only get better the more you watch , keep up the great work man !!
Thank you!!! I’m glad you’re enjoying them and I definitely have more on the way
@alwaysnerdyretros if you ever run out of comic book video games to cover, can you do an Onimusha from Capcom
Always Nerdy has officially ascended to a whole new plane through retrospectives of non-existent games now. I demand more.
Hahaha even I didn't expect it. This was meant to be a quick 20 minute bonus video that blew up into a full-on retrospective. I'll monitor how this video does and whether viewers want more like it. If so, I'll see if there are some other good candidates.
If Daredevil ever gets an open-world game they should pull from old members of his rouges gallery, Death-Stalker would be an amazing pull and he's one of my favorite obscure characters since his design, powers, and backstory are great but he's been dead in the comics since Jimmy Carter was president, he has so much storytelling potential for a revival (and this is coming from someone who thinks most characters should stay dead in comics).
Hard to imagine how a Daredevil game could be made and not feel exactly like Batman. The Batman mechaincs & gameplay fit PERFECTLY with Daredevil. All the way down to the detective mode (Blind Mode)
There's mods for that, son. "Exactly" is a stretch though since daredevil cant fly my guy :)
@@talonryan3779 ah yes, Batman, known for his ability to fly
Man the music for the sewer level sounds like something straight out of Manhunt. Super cool
Its too bad a game like spider man shattered dimensions didn't exist when this game was being made as that spiderman game's level design and style would have helped this company's vision i feel
I love he cutscenes from this game. So stylized that I wish more comic book games these days would lean into. Now we're so focused on mocap and these big CGI movie moments. But a game like Ultimate Spider-man stays in your mind because of how stylistic it was.
again we dont mind realistic graphics, its just many games only focusing on that
Finally someone does a full length video on this game!
Yay, new video and it's about something I know little about and didn't see people cover. Exciting .
The game's story sounds very similar to the first Neversoft Spider-Man game. Shame the game ended up on the cutting room floor.
I really hope there'll finally be a big budget Daredevil game at somepoint. I don't necessarily think it needs to be as big of a budget as the recent Spider-Man games, for example, but it'd be nice if it were a smaller scope, less bloated linear hub based game instead of an open world. But I wouldn't be opposed to a full open world if traversal could be made entertaining enough to account for a much larger world. My ideal traversal for a DD game would probably be something akin to the recently released Rooftops and Alleys for the parkour and the grappling from the Arkham games mixed with basic swinging from said grapple.
yeah, I don't want a massive open world DD game, but I'd love something with a sort of smaller, very intricately designed open world. Less Arkham Knight, more Arkham City. Something where we get familiar with individual alleys and fire escapes. Just Hell's Kitchen with lots of detail, rather than all of Manhattan.
@@kellymccabe9154 agreed 100%. A relatively large Hells Kitchen as a hub type of thing (kinda like Prague in Deus Ex Mankind Divided for example) with some side activities. Linear, thought out stage for some larger missions. I think it could 100% work. Realistically I think open world is what it’d be, because everything has to be open world for some reason :/
One can dream though
@gargablargblarg yeah, really wish everything didn't need to be massive open worlds all the time.
I think Daredevil would be much better suited to something that is a little smaller but more intricate and occasionally linear.
I imagine going to a new location (enemy base in a warehouse, Sewer system, chop shop, etc.) and starting off with everything grey around you, only becoming visible as you bear sounds and explore, slowly uncovering new locations, to mimic DD being blind.
Such an interesting game to cover. Always heard about this but seeing a dive into it is really interesting.
Man, this is way more in depth than anything I’ve ever seen about this game I thought about all the time. Great work
A Daredevil should be a MAJOR priority for Marvel. Any good developer willing to make it is welcomed. Imagine a Daredevil game with the combination style of Rocksteady’s Batman and Insomniac’s Spider-Man with the combat style of Sifu and Nightwing from Arkham City, open world game, with dialogue choices for court cases from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as well as detective missions, it would be one of THE BEST Marvel games EVER.
I'm really surprised that nobody's taken a crack at it since this game. I think even Troy Baker has expressed interest in voicing Daredevil. My understanding is that Marvel let's developers pick the projects/characters they want to tackle, so I guess other characters keep winning out over Daredevil.
@@alwaysnerdyretros same here
Hopefully one studio takes a shot at making a game about the horn head lawyer.
Also Troy Baker voicing Daredevil?
The man pulls of Batman with flying colors, Daredevil would fit him like a glove.
@@arachnidcomics6404 Yeah he’d be excellent. I’d have no problem with him taking the role
Love this video, never saw such a deep dive into this game, thank you

We’ve looked forward to your upload. Please keep up the great work. Your extremely diligent and it shows in your format

Great coverage! I dig this video. I just liked and subbed. Can't wait for the Wolverine X-2!
Looking forward to the guardians game
Retrospective
I’m really excited to release that one! It has a lot more depth than I initially realized, so there’s a lot to discuss in it and I think it’ll be a good one. I’m hoping to have it ready maybe around September/October.
Always a delight when you upload. Hope you're doing well, my dude👍
I’m doing good! Thank you for asking and I hope you’re doing alright yourself
Incredible work!
Great video you always do amazing work
Thank you!
I remember DD being my favourite character as a kid. I was so excited about the prospect of a game where you can play as DD, as the trailers and gameplay videos on the early internet looked so good to me. I was disappointed to find out the game was cancelled
Same, it was such a gut punch when it was cancelled. The leaked playable build and learning more about the game has at least been a little bit of closure for me
@@alwaysnerdyretros id crawl over glass to have gotten a DD game. The closest I could get, were those Ultimate Marvel Alliance (or whatever) games.
@@Fyrdman He’s fun in the MUA games, but I agree it’s not enough. My hope is that with Daredevils integration into the MCU, it’ll spark more interest in him to the point someone is willing to attempt a solo game for him. God I hope so lol.
@@alwaysnerdyretros were getting a new Wolverine game, I hope DD gets a similar treatment.
I can imagine DD being like the Arkham games. Swapping Detective vision for his sonar
Hell yeah I wish this game came out when i had an Xbox but another video of yours about it is even better
Hi Always Nerdy its been a while, its very cool of you to explore the uncompleted Daredevil game as i didnt know much about it.
Youre always excellent & insightful.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
Welcome back missed you man
Thank you so much for this video Nerdy. Daredevil is my favorite Marvel hero and this game is the biggest what-if for me. This video is extremely well thought out and interesting. Good work!
Thank you very much! Similar to you, this game has been on my mind ever since its cancellation, so it was exciting for me to research
Oh, never heard of that game. Thanks a lot for enlightening us about it!)
No problem, thanks for checking it out!
Let’s go! I didn’t expect you to cover this game, but I’m auper happy you did! I still own the GBA game (super fun and plays similarly to the first two raimi Spider-Man games for gba). Super fun! Always loved the visual Miller and Alex maleev designs that suit the feel of the game perfect
I always felt that Assassin's Creed is basically what a Daredevil game would be like.
With the parkour, combat and even the special sight of the Assassin's would be very much like Daredevil's sonar senses.
I'm playing through Black Flag now just for fun and I totally agree! I first thought of Daredevil too lol
I think it would work having a Arkham city sized map
A REALLY cool gameplay idea for a daredevil game would be having lawyer side missions. A client would visit the firm and have a case for you to tackle. When you hear out the client, you gather clues as daredevil and go through your evidence BUT there is a catch. Some clients are actually guilty and you have the choice to destroy evidence and intentionally botch the case so they get arrested, or defend and successfully win but the guilty client goes free. This ties in perfectly with the dark morality of the legal system in the daredevil comics, where Matt is often conflicted and critical of it. Do you do the right thing and let a criminal get punished while sacrificing your integrity as a lawyer? Or stay true to lawyer principals and assure every client gets a fair trial? I'd even have different dialogues Matt says after a case depending on how it went like him feeling horrible that a guilty man walked free, or Matt wondering if he's right for intentionally sending a guilty client to prison when he promised a fair trial
The goat is back
bro if your watching this man's content and you ain't subscribed yet...WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!!!
Perfect upload to have on while doing things around the house, your stuff is super informative and interesting!
Hope to see you cover more lesser known marvel games from this era, xmen next dimension, the fantastic four games, etc.
Side note a video on the movie tie in hulk game would be a neat watch as it sure is a game that did release 😭
That's my goal! Hulk and F4 especially need some coverage on the channel. I'll still throw in some modern games occasionally, but my hope is to have a good balance of old and new, if not skewing a bit more to older games. Honestly, they're faster to make, which is nice for me too lol.
Always appreciate the effort you pour into these videos. You bring substance to your material. Been subbed for awhile now keep it up!
It's a shame this game got cancelled. In terms of licensed games, the gameplay seemed way ahead of its time.
Hope to see Hulk ultimate destruction one day
Thank you so much! I definitely plan to get to hulk ultimate destruction at some point. I’ve been getting quite a few requests for that one
Awesome video. I learned alot. I hope Daredevil gets a game "soon". I also really hope for a video on Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Thank you and I agree, Daredevil deserves a solo game. Also, I've been getting a lot of requests for Ultimate Destruction lately, so it's definitely high on my priority list. X2: Wolverine's Revenge and Guardians of the Galaxy are my next two, but I haven't decided what will come after that yet.
Still cool that we get to know about the game as most very promising ones end up in the cutting room floor without much evidence from them. At least we get to play it, do appreciate documenting on it.
I think that in another timeline, if this would have been released, this game would have cemented itself in the superhero action game history same way that Spider-Man on PS1. Hopefully with future games based on other characters from either Marvel or DC like the upcoming Wonder Woman game is able to give us other characters in the lime light
Lovely work you did presenting this game, it's a shame it got canceled, would be nice to see it come back today and probably have Insomniac Games work on it to match what they did with Spider-Man 2018. The voice actor for Dare Devil sounds like the same voice from the Spider-Man animated series from the 90s, the IMDB shows Edward Albert who passed away in 2006. The Voice actor for King Pin was done by Roscoe Lee Brown in the animated series who passed away in 2007, but it doesn't sound like him at all in this game.
Thank you! Yeah I wish I knew who voiced those roles. None of the developers I spoke with could remember though
its always a good day when nerdy drops
I'm excited to see your X2 wolverines revenge video and your Guardians of the Galaxy game video
A truly welcome surprise
The voice of Kingpin was Actor Roscoe Lee Brown who voiced Kingpin in the 90's Animated Spider-Man cartoon Fox Saturday.😊
Lets gooo! New Nerdy video! I'm locking in!! c:
Haha thanks for checking it out and I hope you enjoy!
I‘m at 7:47 and i just thought immediately: This is literally the glide from infamous 1&2. I wonder if one of the developers worked on infamous later on or if this is just a random coincidence but man this looks almost 1/1
Infamous exploration in a Daredevil game would've went hard asf at the time, I can't even lie. Huge fan of both series, very unfortunate to see that the game never got released.
I really want a DareDevil game so bad now I do hope someone picks up this game finish and release it on current gen consoles
I remember seeing a screenshot of this in a PlayStation magazine many years back. Was always disappointed it never ended up coming out.
A lot of the game mecahnics and level design feel soo ahead of it's time that they seem like a contender against Arkham Asylum. Like Batman's detective vision and Asylum's small worlds with depth and verticality. Not to mention sewer levels mirroring some horror elements from asylum as well. I'm very much surprised, amazed and saddened by their vision. Great video like always AlwaysNerdy.
This is crazy long for the amount of gameplay available man you just go on and on forevet
Hello Nerdy! Glad to see you again. Hope all is well with you! If it's possible, could you do a video on the Deadpool game?
I'm doing good, thanks for asking! I'm trying to decide when to do Deadpool. I have the game disc sitting in my closet ready to be covered, but I have other projects that are taking priority. I don't currently have a good estimate on when I'll actually do that video, but I'll continue to gauge interest on it over the coming months. So I won't have a video for him alongside the upcoming movie, but I'm hoping to have X2: Wolverine's Revenge release sometime early August.
@@alwaysnerdyretros There is a New Deadpool Movie with Cassandra Nova as the main villain. so maybe do it on the release day.
The art style here was really cool. Triple A games only focus on hyper realistic art style these days and it makes me wish for more games that do something more like this
I would guess the bar would be used similar to The Punishers home base in his game, a place for you to select levels and upgrades in between missions.
In the design documents I read, that wasn't mentioned, but that's a fun idea! Kind of like the arcade upgrades in Spider-Man 2. From what i read though, it sounded to me like Josies was going to be a place to gather intel from Turk.
Kingpin sounds like they wanted to remind us of 90's Spider-Man Kingpin.
Great Video! If you have time, X-men Destiny is a pretty interesting game.
You always upload and I don’t get the damn notification
Did you click the bell icon? I don’t think subscribing alone enables notifications
It’s on, I must just miss it. Still annoying though
@@mikewazaski8597 That is annoying, I hope it’s working properly
I wonder if you'll ever take a look at BottleRocket's cancelled Flash game.
Also, listening to the bits of music from this game makes me wish Techno would come back into the mainstream.
I'm not too familiar with it off-hand but I'll look into it some more. A few others have suggested that game as well
1:27:36 that kingpin voice sounds straight up 90s Spider-Man The Animated Series
30:13 wow cool mansion
Thank you this was great, wish the Owl was one of the main Bosses in this unreleased game.❤
I remember I'm electronic gaming magazine there were ads for this. I used to ask dudes at the stores when was it releasing
welcome back
Thank you!
8:42 that's a perfect Bruce Wayne voice 😳
They should do it as a first person VR game where you can just see the sounds everybody makes
I'm fairly certain that Kingpin is Roscoe Lee Brown who did the voice for him in Spider-Man The Animated series
I could be wrong but the similarities are massive.
Ultimate Spider-Man Ps2, fits your Symbiote theme you were going for.
Definitely! I still plan on doing it and web of shadows. Just trying to cover some other heroes for a bit before diving back into Spider-Man
Kingpin voice actor kinda sounds like the 90s animated spiderman version of kingpin.
If we ever get a Daredevil game that’s released, I hope we get to also play as his lawyer side. 🤔
Daredevil and Moon Knight deserves a game of their own.
Nice video. Have you played the Blade games on ps1 and ps2?? Those reviews would be sweet
No I haven't tried them yet, but I'd like to a do a video on them in the future! I'm waiting to play them before that so I can go in blind. I'll probably look into those games more seriously as we approach the movie (assuming they ever stop delaying it)
Out of all the Marvel Characters that are long overdue for a AAA Game,Daredevil need to be one of them and Troy Baker recently said that he would be on board to see a Daredevil Game and potentially even Voice the Character.
Man this game actually looks like it had a lot of potential
How on EARTH did this happen? I remember wanting to play this as a kid and being so sad it was cancelled. I had absolutely no idea it was even this far along and the possibility of it being RELEASED in ANY WAY is completely mind blowing to me. I have so much on my backlog to play but I may make an exception for this because I wanted to play this for so long and thought it would be impossible to ever get a chance. With this said, I'm sure someone will finish it and I can't wait!
It's not getting finished. Someone leaked an old build of it that you can play for yourself on an emulator, but it's not in any kind of active development
1:31:52 check the voice cast of Spider-Man the Animated Series. That voice actor for kingpin is this same voice actor
Kingpin's voice is definitely Roscoe Lee Browne.
By the looks of things this could have been the Spider-man ps1 for Daredevil.
I never heard of the Sewer King, but anyways, there was a minor character, an original character called the Sewer King in Batman, the Animated Series
It sucks we didn’t get this, this would’ve been a ps2 hit just like Ultimate Spiderman! Now is a better time than ever to make a Daredevil game. After his Netflix show he got immensely popular, so I hope in the next couple years, maybe Insomniac, will make a Daredevil game.
Can you please do a video next time also about the cancelled marvel heroes omega video game ?
I never knew about this game at all until today. It’s a shame that it got cancelled.
Goat dropped
Hope we get punisher alongside daredevil in the near future. There’s more to marvel than just avengers & Spider-Man
Shame that this game never been released, cause Five Thousand Feet did a good job making this. They really showed so much effort put into this open world game. If they given them enough time. It'll become a good Daredevil game.
I had to stop watching cuz I haven’t read the Miller run and you were talking just a little too much about it for me personally. But I just wanted to say that from what I’ve watched this video is really well done, informative and engaging and once I do read Millers run I’ll be coming right back to watch from beginning to end.
No worries! I went pretty deep on the comics for context, since I assume most viewers either haven't read those comics or don't plan to. I talk comics throughout the rest of the video, so definitely return when you're comfortable. When you're done though, I think you'll enjoy the rest of the video, since you'll have a newfound appreciation for what the developers were going for in their game.
@@alwaysnerdyretros Oh yeah I totally see why you were talking about the comics, I’m just overly pedantic and prefer knowing literally nothing before hopping into something new. But yeah it seems like I’ll get a new-found appreciation once I come back.
@@critique0767 haha not a problem at all! I’m the same way about potential spoilers
Daredevil: I watched him walk in the building…
Did they forget who Matt Murdock was?
I hope someday the 2007 cencelled flash game gets leaked online
I'll say this for the Grind Mechanic, it was probably the best way to do it. Parkour systems didn't really show up in games proper until the 360/PS3 era and that was mostly because of how much animation/work would go into everything. Vaulting over objects, etc, and having that many unique interact-able objects in a level (especially an open world one) likely would have made the game run even worse considering it already had issues with stability.
Even if grinding doesn't fit the character (and I say that as a Daredevil fan) it is probably better than a half-baked parkour system that would likely be more automated than even rail grinding. I think if they had just removed the 'grinding' and replaced it more with a running or tightrope walking run, it would have worked out better in the end.
An example I'll roughly bring out for a bad parkour system in an open world, just as a point, is Catwoman from Arkham City. A ton of unique animations, and it just slows/kills the pace of her movement.
YOU THE GOAT
Hahaha thank you!
Yeah, Daredevil grinding on rails like he's Sonic is pretty unsettling, plus momentum doesn't work that way
Epic!
Definitely gotta do fantastic 4 ps1 and fantastic 4 (2005).
I agree! Those are two games I'm really eager to revisit. I'd love to get to one of them by the end of the year, if not early 2025.
The soundtracks in this remind of similar ones from Spider-Man ps1/pc/N64
I feel like the rise to honor stick fight mechanic would have worked well for this game. It would give you that 360 fight coverage and would fit well with the character since he is blind and could detect different enemies from behind him. Now they would need to improve it since it wasn’t great! Too bad it never released
Please do the ultimate Spider-Man game next!!!!
The algorithm be sleeping on my second watch
I really wish that modders could take it upon themselves to actally finosh this game. The ground work is there just need to create new maps/areas and find new voive actors for the characters and maybe switch to a different engine. I would pay full price for such an experience.
