The most intersting part of reading the original Black Suit Saga is realizing how much of what it's known for came from later adaptations/continuity. It's not even really a saga about the suit, it's just a period of comics where Peter happens to have a new suit. In terms of story that's specifically related to the symbiote, it's just "Peter finds symbiote. It occasionally makes him fight crime while sleeping. Reed tells Peter it's alive. Peter gets rid of the suit. End."
For me, the most interesting parts of the Black Suit Saga are twofold. 1) How much comes from later adaptations. Originally, the suit was self-repairing, produced its own webbing...and that's mostly it. It didn't affect Peter's mind or behavior, or make him any stronger, or give him any super odd abilities...At *most*, it could maybe imitate other clothes. All it did to him was take his body out at night while he was sleeping, and that's mostly it. It's TAS and subsequent adaptations that made it make him stronger, and make him more aggressive, and give him more tentacle-y abilities. 2) It, in hindsight, makes me realize how much Marvel can't keep the script straight, even within its own comics. Originally, it was trying to help him, but in a creepy and kind of violating way. Then they started portraying the symbiote as evil and malicious, a parasitic entity that corrupts its host and drains them dry. Then they portray it as wanting to be good, but it's misguided. Then its evil. Then it's good. Then it wants to kill people. Then it wants to be a hero. Marvel doesn't have a canonical personality for the black symbiote, and while the original incarnation was simple, tragic and yet creepy, they keep being wishy-washy about it and its personality and motivations. And that's the most frustrating thing to me. Almost every character and entity in Spider-Man mythos is established, set, and has a defined identity, for as iconic as the black symbiote is, the only thing anyone can agree on is that "It wants to bond to Peter, but Peter won't end up staying bonded to it, because the status quo trumps all, and also lazy and tired drug addiction/abusive relationship metaphors". Everything else is whatever the hell the writer wants it to be for that specific story.
@@CaptKami18 This mindset of "its entirely fine" is essentially why none of the mainstream Western super hero comics will never be able to move onto anything greater. In then end status quo trumps all.

Was eagerly anticipating this one! Thank you for providing a balanced and fair review and of course getting the inside perspective with the developers and cut content! No matter its flaws, this was one of the first Spider-Man games I played growing up so it will always have a special place in my heart. Keep up the excellent work!!!
Just wanna say I really appreciate your videos man. I usually have a lot of trouble sleeping and (not calling your videos boring) these long-form retrospectives are very comforting, thank you
As a kid I could never pass the lizard boss battle, I remember on New Year’s Eve my cousin beat it for me but I didn’t know you are supposed to overwrite save files so we weren’t able to save it cause I was out of space for a fresh save 😭 he kept insisting it was fine but I was like no it has to be a fresh one
I have a theory on the electro cameo, in MTV's spider-man the new animated series, electro actually made a few appearances, and the show itself is loosely canon to the rami films, so this could explain that scene, but that's very debatle, since curt connors dies in his first episode.
That’s cool. I actually had a similar theory but the other way around. Cus in the mtv show, kraven and Spider-Man have history that we never saw, so I like to think it’s referring to the fight from the Spider-Man 1 game
I love listening to these retrospectives while I’m driving or at work. They’re long enough that I can keep them going for a while without needing to start looking for something new, detailed enough that I’m never bored, and nerdy enough to make sure I’m interested in what you’re talking about. Especially since so many of the games you talk about are games I grew up playing nonstop!
Actually, this isn't JK Simmons' first time voicing Jameson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man games. He played him in Spider-Man 2...'s super obscure PSP port, which is mostly a reskin of the Spider-Man 1 game, reusing locations, music, with some 2 music mixed in there, and boss fights. I don't know why he's only in a PSP port barely anybody played and not the console version, but you can look up his cutscenes and see for yourself.
1:11:15 it’s funny because I rewatched the film and felt venom’s lack of humanity and the rushed forced villain bit helped bring the other character arca to a close. I struggle to see what harry would have sacrificed himself for or how sandman would have a chance to explain himself to peter without venom pulling strings at the end
I loved that the PS2 version you had to fight the symbiote off you to change backi to red and blue and that it gets harder to take off the more the story goes
Hey, I would love if you could touch upon at some point later in your retrospective series the connection Web of Shadows has and the potential of it serving as another entry as part of the ‘Raimi-Verse’. Notably the connections such as: - The shared history between Spider-Man and that of Kingpin, Black Cat, Vulture all hinting/referencing their appearances in prior Raimi-games. - The Mech Minibosses having prototypes in Spider-Man 3 (X360/PS3 version) during a photo mission, sharing an identical design. - The line during the first Black Cat mission, “Green Goblin was so 6 years ago! The kids, they like the Venom and the Sandman!”, referencing the timeline between games with WOS releasing in 2008. Peter is also shocked and possibly fearful to see one of Kingpin’s men using similar tech as Goblin, saying, “It can’t be!” worried almost as if Norman or Harry had returned from the dead. - Spider-Man 3 essentially being used as a jumping off point mechanically for the gameplay of WOS. - Peter’s voice (that’s a joke, and I love it actually). I’d love to see your thoughts on this, especially since ‘Friend or Foe’ is often discussed as being a final entry in these line of games when I’ve always personally believed WOS should be considered as such if not more so. Loving the series thus far!
While the Treyarch game is pretty flawed, I still have a soft spot for it. After Ultimate Spider-Man, this game was my go-to Spider-Man game when I was a younger kid. I didn’t get copies of the first two Spider-Man movie games until my early teens and I still have never played Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions or Edge of Time but I hope to eventually. As an adult, I can definitely look back and see the problems Spider-Man 3 has, both the game and the movie, but I still appreciate them both for being a part of my childhood. But for the positives I have with the game, I really appreciated the sense of scale the city had and the web swinging was very satisfying, especially the double web swing (something I hope is added in Insomniac's future games). I also appreciate the inclusion of the Lizard finally in the Raimi universe and his levels were some of the stand-outs for me (and which felt like an homage in Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 which I appreciated). I liked the gang storylines with the Arsenic Candy being the most unique one I think, and them all culminating with the Kingpin. Scorpion's levels were also highlights, especially the arcade section and Rhino's boss fight. The Daily Bugle missions are also some of my favorites. I love when you take the photos of the impostor Spider-Man on the helicopter with Spidey commentating on his acrobatics and the bit of a snarky attitude he gives the guy after saving him from falling. I also always thought the UFO was actually on Earth searching for the symbiote since it's also an alien and they could have deduced that it landed near NYC. I really liked having much of the movie's cast reprise their roles, with JK Simmons being the best as always. And of course, the QTE fails are a comedic treat.
There's this weird detail in the ps2 version in the game. You're given the choice of either doing the bomb mission with J. Jonah Jameson or the first lizard mission: If you do the lizard mission first, there's some text saying that j jonah had died giving you a game over I'm not sure why they gave you the choice if choosing one of them gives you a game over
@@alwaysnerdyretros if I had to guess why it was likely in the early stages of development, the game would've let you pick which missions to choose in any order however due to the ps2 limited hardware it got scrapped but realised they left that one bit where you get to choose so they put up the text saying what happens
Awesome video! I remember when I was younger I played Spider-Man 3 on the Wii and it soooo fun and I had a blast, especailly being able to switch between suits. I can recall that Morbius boss like it was yesterday and sort of scared me a bit lol. Again as always your retrospectives are top-notch and are well done! Amazing work!
i had just watched another type of retrospective on purposeless porpoise and now one is hilarious and being a critic in a sarcastic way but here mr.Nerd is always in depth about every detail little and big also i never noticed how thick Venom is in this game
PS2PS2 "What would Spider-Man be without his spider powers? He'd be... man. Is that what you came here to play, Man 3? I don't think so, so go ahead and crawl up this wall. Y'know, like Spider-Man."
Just finished the video today, you did absolutely geeat with this video. Very informative. I get the criticisms with the Xbox 360 version of the game, it definitely could've been better. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't have an absolute blast playing this a few years ago. Well except for the Kraven & Lizard boss fights. Those had me on a level of frustration I don't wish to experience again.
Back in the day when this game came out, I was still slumming on my PS2 when most of my friends were sitting pretty with their PS3s. But they came flocking to my place to play my version of the game when they all experienced the problems you point out in this video. Couldn't agree with you more: creativity and care trump graphics and engines when it comes to the quality of a game. I've been waiting for you to do this review for a while and I am SO glad that you showcased the superior decisions made with the PS2 version, and even your refrences to playable goblin in the first game which I loved so much! (I guess I understand why Sma Raimi didn't like the idea. He's more into classic, old school Spider-man and couldn't comprehend the appeal of playing as the bad guy.)
The quality of research that you do on these videos is really fantastic, it helps keep certain pieces of behind the scenes info alive in a way that other licensed games would probably lose to time. I felt very vindicated when it was confirmed that Scorpion from the first game was the same story arc into this one. When I was a kid I definitely considered the added villains canonical from one game to the next, and I am glad the people making this game were fully aware. I wonder what would have happen if Spider-Man 4 did come out with Vulture and Black Cat in it. Anyways, this game is quite flawed, but I don't fully get the hate. Really wonderful to see all the in depth exploration of it, as a kid I spent several years watching walkthroughs of both the PS2/Wii and Xbox/PS3/PC versions before I got to play them myself.
1:09:03 Actually, from what I heard, Raimi wanted only Sandman to be the villain. He planned to continue Harry story but didn't want him to become another Goblin. This also fits with his style since Raimi prefers to use only one villain for movie (this clear in the fact that originally, the first Spider Man film was suppose to have both Green Goblin and Octopus as villain, but Raimi was able to convice the studio to save Ock for sequel).
I don't know if anyone has said it already but that leaked Spider-man 4 build actually turned into the first Prototype game. You can even see it in the smear effect on his arms as he's swinging.
Oh man this was super nostalgic to watch. I grew up playing the PS2 version and I loved it. Would be fun to see what I think of it with a more recent lens haha
Hey, man! I hope you’re well. Now you get a ton of a comments, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this one goes a miss, but I just wanted to first of all say that I love your videos. You never fail to disappoint and I find them to be so relaxing. I just wanted to point out something I love about the next gen version of the game and the old gen version of the game. For the next gen, I love the attention to detail in the open world. I don’t know if you happened to stumble across this. But you can actually find locations from the movie. You can find and enter all of these locations: peters apartment, the church, Norman’s house, and in that house you can find the mirror and if you punch it you will find all of the secret goblin gear. You can in fact even find the symbiote rock from the opening cutscene in an alley way. I’m sure there’s more that I have forgot to list. Now the ps2 version, I loved how when you first got the black suit and in certain story missions, The weather and season of the map changed to what looked like a spooky autumn type setting. Gone were the leaves on the trees. A grey gloomy sky. Empty streets. The whole thing changed and i thought that whilst it doesn’t make sense, it still felt really cool and I appreciated the effort. Also In the ps2 version I love the overall feel and vibe to the game. It felt much more “movie” tie in. Straight to the black suit action etc. cut a lot of the fat from the next gen version. I found the next gen version to feel like a real drag. The black suit felt so much better in the ps2 version. The loud thud and cracks you’d leave in the ground upon landing from a jump. The big puffed out chest. The black suit really felt like a power house for sure. And of course being able to freely switch between the red and black suit was much better. Again, the game just felt much more movie based and darker. Anyway, thanks for reading man and take care!
Hey! Thanks for commenting and pointing out those extra details! I’m frustrated at myself because I had in my notes to include Harry’s penthouse and forgot to include it in the video lol. I didn’t know about the symbiote in the alley though! Definitely agree with the feeling of the black suit. It was so great in the PS2 version for all the reasons you mentioned. He felt like a real brute Thank you for commenting and supporting the channel! Take care :)

Your vidoes are really great! the fact that you managed to talk with some of those devs about the game is really surprising. I hope you get to 100k subs this year I have followed your channel since the MUA3 video and you defintly deserve way more subs
One of the rare instances where the last gen ports were better than the next gen one. The PS2/PSP ports seemed way more coherent in story and gameplay compared to the PS3/360 one. I honestly enjoyed this game on the PSP
I think it’s really funny how the villain lineup between Spider-Man 3 and Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 is very uuhhh…similar (Kraven, Venom, Lizard, Sandman)
I played this game since its release and still come back to it every once in awhile. As a matter of fact, i just beat it again a few days ago. Many people said it's bad mainly because of the repetitive gameplay, even from back then, but this is still really fun to play imo, as far as movie tie-in games goes. The VAs were actually actors from the film, more stories about villains that wasn't in the film like Scorpion, Lizard, Rhino, Kingpin,etc... The QTEs are cool and the combat moves are pretty dope. The black suit's actually make you feels stronger since you can obliterate everything much easier, especially with the unique rage mode. Oh and you can play as New Goblin in free roam if you have the Collector's Edition for PS3 which is a nice addition.
this is like the 3rd or 4th SM3 review/ Retrospective I've watched this week. here we go again. I gotta say, you were actually really fair to this game, Giving it merit when it deserves an not just dunking on it. Its a rough game but i personally think it's still pretty fun.

Thank you! I appreciate you commenting to tell me. I’m glad the videos have been able to help you in some way :)
Love this guys videos and pov on things like this
Thank you! I hope you enjoy this one as well!
I remember being so excited to play this game after 2 and was so dissapointed. Love to see you back Nerdy!!
These videos are so thorough and awesome! Really makes my day when you upload, thanks for all the hard work!
Oh I'm excited, I've been waiting for this, hope to see more vids soon
Thank you! I'm definitely goaling to release more videos this year. Last year was a bit bare
@@alwaysnerdyretros what do you think of the canceled Spider-man The Great Web game from insomniac? I think it had a lot of potential
1:35:52 Electro was in the GBA version of Spider-Man 3
Oh good call, I must have overlooked that. Maybe that’s what’s being referenced then
@@alwaysnerdyretros it’s a clone of Ultimate Spider-man on GBA, same sound effects and some of the same animation too
also you fight the Mad Bomber one on one, and he's the only boss in the Game to have his own theme
1:35:49 It's kinda weird is that Electro kinda Exists in the Raimi-Game verse and serves as Boss Fight in the GBA Version of Spider-Man 3.
You did a really Good Job reviewing this Game.
I do hope that you'll do a Retrospective of Captain America Super Soldier.
Your timing is perfect. I never played this game despite loving the first 2 as a kid. I JUST ordered it from ebay the day before your video dropped.
Haha that’s awesome! You’ll have to come back and tell us what you think!
Notably the connections such as:
- The shared history between Spider-Man and that of Kingpin, Black Cat, Vulture all hinting/referencing their appearances in prior Raimi-games.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with me! It was fun and very insightful!
55:38 damn, tobey really put his heart & soul into those line readings lol.
Assajj Ventress being the doctor with Scorpion is something I totally didn’t realize as a kid
Excited to watch mate
missed your videos man good to hear from you again
1:43:53 I think that’s from the E3 trailer for Spider-Man 2. They were originally going to put lizard in but they cut him.
I love this channel and I love these videos, please never stop
Thank you so much! I don't plan on stopping btw. I'm having too much fun :)
15:20 “the blade that pierced his body came from your gilder”

Glad to have you back
Spider-Man mentioning electro could be a reference to the Gameboy Advance version of the game (which has electro as a boss)
You should have way more subs bro, keep it up.
Oh wow thank you!!!! You’re my first super thanks! That really means a lot to me, thank you so much!!!
The lady who voices Mac Gargan's doctor is the voice actress for Asajj Ventress
Glad you're back!!
There's this weird detail in the ps2 version in the game. You're given the choice of either doing the bomb mission with J. Jonah Jameson or the first lizard mission: If you do the lizard mission first, there's some text saying that j jonah had died giving you a game over I'm not sure why they gave you the choice if choosing one of them gives you a game over
Oh interesting, I must have missed that one. That's a strange choice
And here it is, can’t wait to see what’s in store from Nerdy!
I’ve literally been waiting for this for like a year and however long 😂 I’m so happy right now! 😁
PS2PS2 "What would Spider-Man be without his spider powers? He'd be... man. Is that what you came here to play, Man 3? I don't think so, so go ahead and crawl up this wall. Y'know, like Spider-Man."
“Yeah…. I’m Man.” 🧍♂️
its always nice seeing you post peak
56:03 The way morbius threw the woman away made me chuckle 😂
Its weird how everyone seems to collectively be getting nostalgia for this era lately
It's a very satisfying video to watch, answering many questions and mentioning lots of interesting things, great job.
2 hours of video good enough to eat on the game oat, we're so up

This game actually gave Sandman a good excuse to partner up with Venom.
I say the same thing in the video. I liked the games motivation way better than the movie
@@alwaysnerdyretros I believe it's actually based off of either a deleted scene from the film or a earlier script draft.
WE WERE ROBBED OF MAN 3
Spider-Man 3
1:09:03 Actually, from what I heard, Raimi wanted only Sandman to be the villain.
Have you seen the story trailer for the marvel 1943 rise of hydra game, I think it looks really great!
I’ve watched it like 4 times already lol. 2025 feels way too far away!
It’s nice to see an proper review of the game detailing the good and bad instead of a mindless rant thanks for making this
I don't know if anyone has said it already but that leaked Spider-man 4 build actually turned into the first Prototype game.
He felt like a real brute
Thank you for commenting and supporting the channel! Take care :)
Oh, the very first game on my PC! Thank you for making my day better!)

Been waiting for this for a minute 😌😌
I think it’s really funny how the villain lineup between Spider-Man 3 and Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 is very uuhhh…similar (Kraven, Venom, Lizard, Sandman)
This was definitely one of the Spider-Man games of all time
I played this game since its release and still come back to it every once in awhile.
The Greatest Of All Time has dropped another masterpiece. Excellent as always, Always Nerdy!
