    This worked perfectly. Yesterday morning I spilled an entire cup of iced coffee on my keyboard. Found this video. Fortunately husband had 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Did exactly what he shows in the video and my keyboard is working perfectly. Typing on it now. Thanks!!!!

    I tried this after spilling an entire cup of coffee on my magic keyboard. I could not take out batteries, but I turned the keyboard off immediately. I went out to find the 99% isopropyl alcohol (~$33 a gallon at ACE hardware, in the U.S.) and an appropriately sized container. The biggest problem was finding a long enough container bc I have the number pad. I ended up using a laundry basket. I did the sloshing and was shocked to see a ton of particles come out of the board, so a cleaning was due anyway. I brushed and wiped and let it sit for 24 hours to dry. I'm using it now to write this comment and perceive no difference. Thanks for this video! The alcohol was a tad expensive but I saved ~$90 by not having to buy a new keyboard.

      Great to see you got the coffee out. If you can find the correct size container you should only need a pint or 600 ml of IPA. In Australia IPA is worth about the same.

    Thank you for the video! I had a coffee spill on my Apple Magic keyboard about 3 months ago, and the spacebar and a few keys remained sticky afterward and I could not use it properly, space was often missing when I was typing.
    Instead of submerging it into alcohol, I turned the keyboard off, I just poured a bit of 99% alcohol on the keys which had issues, and tried to scrub gently with a toothbrush so it could clean under the keys as much as possible. I then wiped the keyboard with a paper towel and dried it with a hair dryer for about 5 minutes. I then left the keyboard for about 20 minutes for the remaining alcohol to evaporate and it was ready to use again. Maybe leave it for longer to dry if you don't need the keyboard immediately.
    It works very well now, and fingers crossed it will serve me well.

    I spilled a small amount of bourbon which started to affect the top line of keys. As is was really a tiny amount, I just scrubbed the local area with IPA with a toothbrush, and wiped down with a paper towel. The keyboard worked again immediately. Thanks for the tip!

    Thanks. Just tried, we'll see how it goes after it dries. Only about 1/2 day since the coffee/cream (no sugar) spill and I had it drying by my wall heater, so hopefully caught it in time. Fortunately, had a gallon of 99% in my place that I keep around for various purposes (you can always dilute 99% with water to turn it in to normal rubbing alcohol for disinfecting). I have a wired Apple extended keyboard so was stumped with trying to find a container to fit. Fortunately, I found I had a plastic tool carry chest that was long enough (needs to be at least 17" interior dimension.

    • @berkeleybernie
      @berkeleybernie ปีที่แล้ว

      I let it dry for 3 days. Most keys repaired except for the upper right site of the original spill (the backspace delete key, the 0, the -, the +). I suspect that if I had unplugged immediately and done the 99% alcohol rinse before letting it dry out at all, it would have been fine. Thanks, better informed now. Only one spill in my lifetime so far, but better prepared now should it ever happen again.
      EDIT: I've been pounding hard on the - and = keys for a few minutes and they are starting to come back. So perhaps the pounding is dislodging whatever is blocking the connection. Maybe do this for awhile, then rinse and pound those keys while submerged.

    Thanks for this video, can I do this on a wireless (without the battery) keyboard? Spilled coffee on it yesterday. Will the alcohol affect the charging port?

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, will not affect the charging port, Because Isopropyl alcohol evaporates without residue.
      DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL !!!
      MUST BE 99% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL !!

    Thank you for posting this video. I recently spilled coffee on my Apple Magic wireless keyboard. It charges via USB-C, and the specs say that there is a rechargeable battery (which is internal and cannot be removed). Does this mean that I shouldn't try this cleaning method? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lee-Anne M, the problem is you are using Isopropyl Alcohol to clean keyboard.
      That may damage the LiPo battery inside the keyboard.
      A quick spray on top with Isopropyl Alcohol will not hurt, as long as it is wiped away.

    Hello! I have a wired keyboard. I have unplugged it, but won’t this damage the charging area where I will need to plug it back in once it’s dry?

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use Isopropyl Alcohol that washes out any coffee spills, tea spills, etc. The great thing about Isopropyl Alcohol, is that it dries without any residue, and thus does not cause any damage to the electronics.
      I would only do this if you had a spill.
      Let keyboard naturally dry for a couple of days

    Hi Shane - will methylated spirits work as well as isopropyl alcohol?

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No !!! I have tried using methylated spirits, and on some keyboards, it makes the surface of the key Bubble/dimple up. Metho has a reaction with the plastic.
      Good question!!!
      Cheers MBK

    • @michelleharris8430

      I tried methylated spirits before I read this - no damage to the keyboards - apple magic and full size apple keyboard with number pad, but it didn't fix the problem either. The coffee had dried on the full size keyboard and no keys work on that one, while on the magic keyboard the same keys are still not working.
      Is it worth trying Isopropyl alcohol as well? @@Repair2Renew

    Seeing as Isopropyl alcohol is hard to find and expensive could you use distilled water and let the keyboard dry in a warm dry place like a warm oven or over a radiator?

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glumfish, probably would not use distilled water because:
      1. Isopropyl alcohol will absorb water in water damaged keyboards
      2. Isopropyl alcohol will dissolve most other liquids in Alcohol/sugary drinks/coffee damaged keyboards.
      3. Isopropyl alcohol will evaporate quickly
      4. If you get distilled water stick under a BGA chip/component, it will eat away at that component slowly over time (electrolysis)
      If you are having trouble getting IPA, try getting a bulk amount from a :
      1. Hardware store
      2. Chemist
      3. Wholesaler hairdressing supplies
      It should only cost $10 AUD or $7 USD, for 2 pints or a litre
      Cheers good luck

      @glumfish6862 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MBK Upcycle thanks for the reply. I went ahead and used distilled water. The KB is slowly coming back to life. It’s not ideal but I think it will be fine. And this not a keyboard I really use or care about. As for point 4 I see how it could be a problem but since I am not gonna use it for a long time and if I do it will be briefly I believe that even water stuck under a BGA package will have gotten out by then. But I see how it could be a problem if I started using it and leaving it plugged in which could result in slow corrosion due to electrolysis over time. Here in Greece you can get a 1.5L of 99.9 IPA for like 16€ (I have gotten it before) but no one has it in their homes and you can’t get it as easy as ethanol because it’s not used. Here we use 93%-95% ethanol for medical use at home. I haven’t researched why but I assume it may be cheaper and it is definitely safer (Isopropanol is toxic while ethanol can be “safely” ingested as it is metabolized).

    • @Repair2Renew
      @Repair2Renew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arielmalul1 Hi Ariel, yes you can do this on magic keyboards. It sounds like you have deeper issues if your "caps lock key" light not working. This method is really effective with fresh spills. If you have an old spill then you will have less chance of success. If your keyboard is dead, give it a crack, no loss.

    Shane - there is no such thing as "isopropylene alcohol". Drop the "ene". Just Isopropyl. Propylene is a hydrocarbon, similar to ethylene (plastic sheeting). Lessens your credibility if you use the wrong term. Thanks for the video!
