Very interesting. You faced every question I was asking myself XD Regarding the reassembling, I wonder about just glueing the white back cover on its perimeter. Maybe the plastic is hard enough to maintain the whole surface. Maybe glueing plastic on metal would keep it kind of openable on the future. Not very clean but... If I manage to disassemble it in the first place, I may try it.
hindsight: because the contact layers are thin, you could possibly use a scanner to take very detailed images of the traces. also your channel name goes great with the subject of this video
I appreciate the effort but probably for most people, it's just cheaper to buy a new one. Or maybe not buying Apple keyboards again. I have two Apple Aluminium keyboards, and they both got small malfunctions. But repairing is too difficult. I really do like the thinness and the light typing feel of Apple keyboards, but I think I am going for a mechanical keyboard this time. Not because I like the typing feeling of mechanical (in fact, I hate these thick, heavy, noisy mechanicals), but for repairability and key code customisation (QMK/VIA).
And yeah, probably too much effort for most lol. Even me. But I did it as a challenge. And I'm typing this out right now on the fixed keyboard. Definitely a mechanical keyboard is the way they should be making these things. I wanted to turn my K380 into a mechanical keyboard but the cherry keys are just so expensive on their own. But maybe I'll do it for a future video.

Cool video ... very instructive .. thanks. You are right about the battery hog ..I know we could use rechargeable batteries but do you have any thoughts on adding something into the battery space that connects to USB? I know less portable but would solve the landfill problem also..??.
Yeah, I wanted to do that. Just using USB would be really easy and just take like $3 in parts from aliexpress-a 5v -> 3.3v buck converter and a usb plug. But I also wanted to stick a little Li-ion battery that could be recharged. I’ve just been so busy with my next project and not sure how many people would be interested. But maybe I can do it one of these days.
If it’s only the rubber part it could be ok. That just acts like a spring and pushes the key up. If it tore in half that could be bad. But if it tore around the edge and is still a little attached, I say just try to put the key back on and see if it pushes down and returns up ok. If the membrane piece came out completely but is not torn in the middle, try laying it back in the hole and putting the key back and see if it works.
How would you fix a broken dome? My Apple keyboards are about 10 years old, and recently one of the silicone dome was broken. Glue didn't work, because it's so tiny.
The domes really just function like a spring to keep the keys up. If your dome didn't rip down the middle, you can just stick it back in there (I had mine floating in my K380). If, however, they ripped down the middle that would be very bad.
I have this same keyboard on my 2013 iMac. Lately it's been randomly losing its bluetooth connection, then either reconnecting by itself or sometimes I have to hit the power button. Batteries are confirmed good. Maybe it's powering itself off, then comes back on OR it's just losing connection which it's just a few feet from its dongle which is plugged into an Amazon Basics USB hub. Everything else plugged into the hub works. I have sprayed contact cleaner (w/o residue) into the battery tunnel but have not taken it apart yet. Any suggestions (besides get a new keybd and lose weight and get a life : )
That ‘lose weight’ bit made me laugh. Don’t we all? Is that a bluetooth USB dongle? That could be one thing. But mine disconnects/sleeps a lot too. It didn’t do that when new (I think). But it could be a macOS thing. Google: “macos disconnects bluetooth often” and you’ll see lots of posts. Can’t say for sure what the issue is though.
