      @Toe Feet maybe not in bullet chess, but definitely in classic tournaments. I think you can find videos of GMs like Bobby Fischer talking about how draining it is. But being retired definitely affects how he plays, because he doesn’t need to study modern opening theory so he isnt too familiar with countering hikaru’s moves

    • @alexmiller3220
      @alexmiller3220 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @Toe Feet Not true. At least your calculation skills drops down a lot after 40+ years old. And this is not all the problems of aged players. Like in ANY other sport, in chess you need to train everyday to show your A-game against top players. Definitely Kasparov is not in that training mode nowadays.

    • @igorlaniella465
      @igorlaniella465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @Toe Feet Sorry to break this to you but when you get: old your brain gets old, you loose reflexes (calculate variants), you get tired easier (need to keep concentration), your memory starts to fail (openning theory)

      Until quite recently, Kasparov actually had a positive Blitz record against Hikaru, beating him 3 to 1 (now it's 3-3). It's incredible that Kasparov managed to remain competitive with the best players in the world for such a long time. I remember in some of these blitz tournaments in Saint Louis around the mid 2010s, Kasparov actually got winning positions in almost every game. But he'd often struggle with his time and so his overall results weren't that great. A couple of years ago he actually beat Firouzja in a Chess 960 game and held Magnus to a draw by finding a brilliant combination in the endgame. Just shows what a remarkable player he was and how scary he must have been during his prime.
      Nowadays he's clearly too old but I think had he not retired in 2005, he would have remained a top player for a very long time. Probably would have been number 1 until 2010 or so.

    10:31 I'm certainly nowhere near the level of Gary and Hikaru but didn't Gary just outright blunder the rook here? While he may have gained some compensation for it, the look on his face seems to indicate he just missed the rook capture by Hikaru's bishop. He didn't look happy at all about the the move.

    • @santishorts
      @santishorts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      f6 may have been a mistake there but he was DEFINITELY aware that the rook could be taken, what's infinitely more likely is that he overestimated the position after the bishop takes the rook and Garry is very well known for his exaggerated facial expression, basically the entire game he looks like he is losing but he never really is in serious danger. Even that position the engine evaluates at no more than +1 and in a closed position like this that's definitely not enough for a win.
