    Thanks for posting. It vibrates, it shakes, it bakes, all metal, air cooled, clunky shifter wow a true retro! I have always had a soft spot for the Guzzis. Surprising they can keep up with Euro standards with an air cooled engine. Love the color scheme, the head lights. Great video.

    As a Guzzi owner I think the paint scheme is "odd" there are other options such as matte grey and matte blue that are more standard. Now in general Guzzis are different so until you actually get on and ride one it's hard to understand why we folks love em so much!!! Great review keep em coming...

      As a Guzzi owner, you should've known that this particular paint scheme is an hommage to the 1985 V65TT that participated in Paris-Dakar ;-)
      That said, I do agree that the bike looks a bit better in standard colours, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder of course. Those bikes also come as standard on more road-oriented rubber. Personally, I quite like the looks of this V85.
      @TheMissendenFlyer should definitely try the V7 III. That bike is in a way the Porsche 911 amongst bikes. Been around for over 50 years and has slowly evolved and become better with age. Just like the V85, it looks underpowered on paper, but in reality it's got plenty of go, right in the usable rev-range. Feels way more powerful than the specs make you believe.
      Looking forward to a review :)

Every Guzzi i have ever ridden always made me smile and installed that special feeling. I think this bike is priced well for such a capable and do it all machine. @ 7:45 -- Actually, it's an in-line V-twin, since whether an engine is "transverse" or "in-line" depends upon the crankshaft orientation, *NOT* where the cylinders end up sticking out! ;-) Nice review, enjoyed it very much. BTW, it seems to be just a fact of life that shaft drive bikes have heavy & clunky shifting: I've ridden several different brands over the years, & they're all notorious in that way. Helps to preload the shift lever before releasing the clutch to "pop" it into the next gear smartly & then engage clutch again & off you go.... Doesn't matter whether it was my old XS Eleven Yamaha, '86 Honda G'wing, 2003 V11LM Guzzi or any other shaftie, there's just something about the added inertia that makes them all respond to being massaged into gear in the same manner. Thanks to my old pal Dave Dow for the pro tip. Ride on, Dave, wherever you are!

    • @endurojimmy3109
      @endurojimmy3109 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect, it's definitely not an inline V-twin as the crankshaft rotation is transverse to the direction of travel.

    • @oldguzziguy
      @oldguzziguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@endurojimmy3109 eh?

    • @endurojimmy3109
      @endurojimmy3109 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oldguzziguy Confused? Well Moto guzzis and BMW boxers have always been referred to as transverse twins. Maybe to differentiate them from a conventional V twin such as a Harley Davidson, Indian etc or maybe because of their crank throw dictates the cylinders layout being transverse in the frame. In fact on the Moto Guzzi spec sheet they described the engine as transverse (and they should know).
      To confuse matters, in the car industry cars such as the Mini had the engine turned through 90° so they could shorten the wheelbase and they described this as a transverse engine as it was mounted at 90° in the engine bay.
      You will always get someone trying to apply this logic to motorcycles, but it's pointless and muddies the water.
      Possibly because the engine of a Motorcycle is generally seen we described the engine rather than haow it's mounted for example an inline four, parallel twin, V twin or a transverse V twin.

    I've been waiting patiently for this one, and am delighted that you appeared pleasantly surprised by the ride! I've now tested a couple and found the handlebars almost too wide for London congestion, but loved how easily the cruise control works. I also ventured along a wooded trail, and found the turning circle WAY better than I am used to on my Tracer.
    Not to put a damper on things but there is a fair buzz on Guzzi forums about oil being sprayed out of that rear shaft. Might only be affecting 10% and it is believed to result from over filling the oil there, but oil and rear tyres are never a good combo. The UK dealer hadn't heard of this a few months back so must be rare.

    Out of all the bikes I've owned, the one I loved the most was my 1990 Moto Guzzi Le Mans MkV. I also briefly owned a 1982 Le Mans MkIII. I owned the MkV for 11 years from new and covered over 120,000 klms on the girl. Big, red and noisy, and a fabulous mile muncher. Almost anti-social. 1000 kilometres days were covered often.
    She's no longer of this Earth. My Le Mans MkV ended up in a ditch at 120kph in the rain returning from the 2001 Phillip Island World Superbikes.

    Surprising that a mature and seasoned rider, such as yourself, had never ridden a Guzzi before. ;-) I want to warn you that they're addictive. I've owned and ridden many over the last forty years and I was fortunate to lead demo rides for Piaggio during the '16 & '17 Sturgis Rally where I led many trips up and down Vanocker Canyon. I, of course, was able to ride all of the Guzzi models and they all have that same engine and transmission feel. A little clunky but positive, reassuring, and an engine sound that only a V done the way it's meant to be can produce. They have decent pulling power throughout the rpm range, but really like to stay above 4,000. The shifting becomes much more exact as they break in. They also hold a steady line in the twisties albeit the steering is heavier and slower than some other machines. We Guzzi riders become so accustomed to these that most of us stay with this brand for years. (I do own several other makes at the present time and have owned almost 30 bikes since 1971.) I enjoy your reviews as you are one of the few who seem to take time to understand a bike and have a nice delivery. Come to the Black Hills area and I'll show you some great roads.

    Looks really good to my eye. The lights will split opinion but as a Street Triple owner I don't mind them. I had a quick look at the other colours and the bike looks better in grey, less gaudy and nicely understated. Looking forward to seeing your update. Thanks again TMF.

    Mr. Flyer- I've looked forward to your tests of this machine! To me it is the prettiest of the ADV bikes, despite looking like Donald Duck from the front. It would have been in the running for my next bike except that a 1250GS came available first. Please try it out with Mrs. Flyer on the passenger seat too, as this aspect of riding is often not reviewed. Thanks, Bob

    I nearly bought an 850 La Mans Moto Guzzi in the early 80's when I lived in Oz, brilliant handling but as I was 6foor 1nch then (I have shrunk since) I was a bit gangly on it, beautiful looking machine, ended up buying a Laverda Jota instead. All the best 👍👍😎

    Rode an 850 T3 years ago attached to a Squire adult and child sidecar. Worked really well and the T3 had 1 front disc linked to the rear brake for co-ordinated braking. The handlebar lever controlled the other disc. Braking system great especially for slowing a heavy sidecar. The torque of the bike was powerful enough to get the outfit moving. Excellent engine and full of character. Love shaft drive bikes.

    You nailed some Guzziesque issues. Your trouble with first is completely normal. I would prime the shifter first. You also get big clunks when shifting. Getting it into N can also be tricky and sometimes when shutting from 1 to 2 ....up pops N!!! I've been riding for 36 years and like you said there is nothing like riding a Guzzi.

    • @peterlivermore2177
      @peterlivermore2177 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True for older Guzzis, but the V85 shares the same new 6-speed gearbox with V7 & V9, and they shift like a knife through butter once you refine your technique.
      I have never ever had a false N, or any kind of mis-shift on my V7. Those straight-cut gears whine like buggery though, but that's all part of the charm.

    Be careful Mr Flyer, I bought my V7 9 years ago and now can't bear to part with it (nor can my wife). So a second bike is now necessary (damn, damn!) There's something about how that transverse v makes its power. You're dead right about the vibrations btw: I test rode a Kawasaki z1000sx last week and the high frequency vibrations at 5k-5.5k were a real issue on an otherwise pretty flawless bike - I had tingly fingers and buttocks for a couple of hours after riding. I'm thinking of getting a ducati supersport instead even though the Kwakker is a much more capable bike overall (and cheaper). I think the biggest problem with the V85 is the tubed tires. Guzzi could have learnt from ze Germans and given us spoked wheels that run tubeless. Great review though. I've been waiting for Guzzi to put that engine in a V7 chassis for a couple of years. Hopefully at EICMA...

    • @BigMoeFo

      They did already it's called a V9...

    • @jamiebell1528
      @jamiebell1528 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BigMoeFo Well, not exactly. The V85 is a brand new engine which makes 80bhp, whereas the V9 engine makes about 55bhp. Also, and this is just personal taste, I'm not keen on either the bobber or roamer looks-wise or handling-wise, whereas obviously I'm a fan of the V7 (at least once i took the rear fender off it, installed mistral exhausts and put some hagon shocks and fork springs on it. Oh, and lowered the instrument panel.... the list goes on.

    I’ve seen several reviews of the V85TT now and they all seem to agree that’s it’s a lovely bike, full of character and really puts a smile of your face - with the only issue being its looks. I like it - not at first but it’s grown on me. Would I buy one? Maybe. If I had the means to own multiple bikes then I think the V85TT would certainly be a contender for a spot in my garage, but the trouble is if you can only afford one or two bikes making a decision is so difficult with so many great bikes to choose from.
    First world problems eh? 😂

    I don't like the looks. But a lot of riders ignore Moto Guzzi. Maybe because of the sparse dealer network? I owned a 2012 white Moto Guzzi Norge 1200 sport tourer for a while, and I absolutely loved it! It was unique in so many ways. It was super comfortable, tons of power, wind protection and had character. People don't know what to compare it to. You would be very pleasantly surprised how nice it rides. Gas mileage wasn't great but I liked it almost as much as my "14 BMW R1200RT.

    Always liked them, quirky, retro. Reminds me of the early GS which started my eye on dual-sport bikes. I nearly bought a Stelvio, but they are just too tight with the length of my legs so I went with the GS. The way they carried up the frame tubing in the back is very nice for carrying the load of luggage and passenger.

    Andy,
    A great review, come and try a Le Mans 1, to see how things have changed in 40 years, the handling of their Tonti inspired frames has always been great. The torquey Guzzi V twin engines will typically do many 1,000’s of miles if properly serviced etc, at £10.8k it looks fantastic value & a bit different... Tim
