One of THE best songs ever written. Writes a book, paints a picture, sets a mood with minimal words. Kris and John Prine...be a hundred years before we see pure talent like they had.😢❤

This is what i call "the perfection in imperfection". He may not be pitch perfect, but he means every damn word and it's all so well weitten that we can't help but love it. It's just so... human.

Where Dylan often looses me and I'm left stranded, wondering what his metaphors might mean, Kris always connected directly into my heart, without spelling things out plainly. What a great songwriter. The only one that came near was Townes Van Zandt. I'll miss them. Thank god we can just put on one of their tunes and remember that we once walked among giants.

Kris Kristofferson brought a certain sensuality to country music, he paints such distinct images with his lyrics. I've listened to this song hundreds and hundreds of times and still today I find myself thinking deeply on the lyrics, man what a songwriter.

Kris Kristofferson was a master in blending poetry and melody in an accessible way. You don't have to interpret his words to figure out the meaning of the song. You don't have to understand music theory to enjoy his music. I can sing his songs, I can play his songs, but I will never be able to write his songs.
IMHO The only person that comes close to his skill was John Prine. Who just happened to be discovered by Kristofferson, who said of Prine "He writes songs so good we'll have to break his thumbs".
Legendary award winning singer-songwriter, award winning actor, Rhodes Scholar, Military Veteran. Kris not only could do it all, he went and did it all. RIP Kris. I hope you've met up with Waylon and Johnny and Prine and are jamming together.

Kris made country music a much more poetic and intellectual genre. He juxtaposes the simplicity of the melody and chord progression with a concise economy of words to express very deep and complex feelings and concepts. That is the definition of poetry and art...expressing powerful ideas or imagery with minimal words or brushstrokes.

i never could have imagined that i would feel as sad as i do for a man that i never even met. i first remember seeing kris as the rubber duck in the movie convoy. i come from a family of truck drivers and i remember watching the movie with my dad when i was a child back in the 90s i must have seen that movie well over 100 times in my 31 years of life. but i discovered kris as a singer and songwriter about the time i turned 14 when i discovered the highwaymen. i mean i already knew who they all were as solo artists but it was only then when i really started to realize just what a special talent kris was and i was hooked ever since. since that time i probably listened to every song and every variation of anything that kris ever wrote and sung. i finally got to see him perform in person back in 2018. he performed with merle's band at the FM Kirby Center in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania. i was so captivated by him and his performance that night. that concert will go down as one of the top 3 best concerts that i ever saw. he was an amazing person.. i have been dabbling a little bit over the past few years learning to play guitar and i figured what better way to honor a great man and a true legend than learning one of his songs.. RIP Kris

One of my favourites of his. I absolutely loved his music and voice for over 50 years. Total legend. His songwriting was so unique. Have to admit to shedding a few tears when I woke and read the news that he had passed. Saw him solo 4 times and once with the Highwaymen

RIP Kris. I got to see him just the once. It wasn't long before he stopped touring and his singing and playing weren't the best. It didn't matter. He stood there all dressed in black, on a blacked out stage with just a spotlight on him. No fancy light show, no band, no backing singers. It was just him and the guitar. The crowd were spellbound. I love that his songs are simple in their chords and melodies. It gives guitar hacks like me a chance of playing them. I have learned a few of his songs and they, along with some by John Prine, are my favourites to play and sing, all alone at home, just for my own pleasure, as I will never be good enough to perform in front of others. It is the pleasure of music at it most personal level.

I don’t know what has moved me more just now… Watching him perform his beautiful and timeless song that reaches deep inside your soul no matter how many times you’ve heard it…… or watching you appreciate so very much. ♥️ Back in the day I saw him many times perform this. I saw a guitar teacher on TH-cam the other day who said, “you’ll never be able to write good music if you only know open position chords.” (naturally, he was selling a course on alternate voicings) Seriously? I’ll take a simple song executed with integrity (like this) over complexity any day.

I have a friend, a musician, who is a huge prog rock devotee. He constantly chides me for my love of what he calls three chord mindless music and also hammers me for my love of country and bluegrass music. I, in turn, call him out for his obsession with shoe-gazing introspection. Over a few beers, however, we always agree that thre is no such thing as worthless music. This man epitomised to me the essence of my preference in music - simple, yes, but perfectly crafted and performed and with a genuine story to tell. Vale Kris Kristofferson.

In the mid 70's my best friends mother (kind of a mother to me as well) who was an english professor and her PHD was in musical ballads. She invited David Allen Coe, and Kris Kristofferson to her class to speak. The night before at 15 years old I had dinner with them. It was pretty amazing. They played together in the living room. Never forget it. Just the most gracious kind guys.

The last I saw of him was in the Willie Nelson Tribute and I looked at him and said he's not long for this world. It gave me chills this morning to hear he had passed. Those that knew him said he was a very gentle man, very shy. You are right Michael he was such a great song writer, my favorite is "Sunday Morning Coming Down". I remember playing his records over and over in the 60's and 70's, "Help me make it through the night". It seems he had this ability to put into words and music his heart that would lead you visually through every word of his lyrics. He was one of a kind who fought the demons in his life and won. Did you know he was to go to West Point, he was from a military family. Love, light, healing and comfort to his family and those who loved him.

My first songwriting idol! I'd joke that I majored in Kris Kristofferson lyrics and concerts. Senior year I first saw the band at NYC Philharmonic Hall, and many more from 1973 forward. I loved when their show featured as yet unrecorded songs. I'd try to learn them in my head so hungry for new metaphors. The band in this performance was as it was in 1972 and 1973. Sadly Stephen Bruton, Terry Paul and Donnie Fritts have all died within the past 15 years. I like to think they're reunited in heaven. They were so tight as friends. Today we're feeling that loss he went through one friend at time. Thank you, Michael for memories of when I was a senior in college! RIP, Kris! ❤

Similar story. My best friend and I first saw him in '76 when he played a venue on the Asbury Park NJ boardwalk. Same band you mentioned. We met all of the band as they walked from their hotel to the concert hall. Met Rita afterwards. Saw him another 4 times and met him twice. Those were some damn great times I'm very grateful to have had. Still know the words to most of his songs from the '70s as I probably listened to those albums fir 100s of hours.

I saw him live in Sweden a couple of years back and you could tell he was’nt in shape to play, he even excused himself beforehand. He did the songs the best he could but the people I were with left in disappointment and said some bad things. This lives with me because to me he is a genius and a legend and I just wish we could have seen him in his prime. ❤❤ ❤ MY ODE TO KRIS … I’d rather hear this old frog croak out his songs with soul, than to hear from some perfectionist play empty rock n roll! And I’d rather hear forgotten words from his aching, breaking heart, than to hear some latest tune that somehow made the charts. 🎶
Yes, Kristofferson’s my hero, through his crazy ups and downs. He has set the hallmark, has the right to wear the crown. Yes, Kristofferson’s my hero, through years and many miles. Whenever I hear his music, it always brings a smile. 🎶
Then in the twilight on the stage, more faded than his jeans, words fell like gilded treasures, more valued than they seem. But I’d rather this old frog croak out out his songs with soul, than to hear from some perfectionist play empty rock n roll … …

John Prine came close, but Kris's were SO much deeper, and yet sounded so simple! The man was without question a genius with words! That's why he was a Rhodes Scholar, majoring in English Lit. About 40 years ago i had an old Gibson guitar and a book of Chris's songs. The Guitar got stolen and i lost the song book . I don't have your gift of playing by ear . I learned how to read music and play some country and some classical. It took about two years lessons with a good instructor to learn to read music decently. I enjoyed your video. I took lessons from a guy one time who could write tabs and chords to a song after listening to it. I have only known the one person that could do that. I took lessons from two different college eduacated musicians they could read music play and never look at their hands. Look at hands you lose your place.

Kris wrote the most controversial lyrics of the late 60s and 70s thats why I love his music.

Thanks Michael, great song always played it , you can play it as an absolute beginner guitarist or vocalist. Getting it rigth and bringing across the emotion comes with more skill and mostly more life experience...just like any Kristofferson song. The man is a legend.

My tribute to Kris is “The Pilgrim: Chapter 33”. “See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans…Never knowing if believing is a blessing or a curse, or if the going up was worth the comin’ down”

Thanks for the assessment of Chris - a genuine country boy with a voice not great, guitar work unspectacular - but, COULD PUT NOTES, CHORDS & LYRICS INTO PLACE .... tear you up, bring ya down or just make you tap your foot and sing along - a real composer for various tastes ! Love your channel, God bless, jj
