Congrats on your CDL. Just a few things, get those ramps out of the cab, DOT will cite you for it. Strap them down on the trailer. Secondly, put a backing plate under the the backside of where the winch bolts go through the trailer. It will not take much force to pull them through the plating. Good Luck with the cdl.

Great job! You might want to get a cover to protect the winch from the elements.

Good video and congrats on the CDL. Couple things I noticed in the video, just wanted to point out for you.
1, If you're able, you should mount the winch on the trailer as close to the center as you can to avoid excessive strain on the barrel when you use it. Winches work best when pulling as close to square as possible. You can also get more out of your winch by buying a snatch block and hooking it to what you want to pull, then pulling the cable through the snatch block and back to an anchor point near the winch. This will effectively double the capacity of your winch. Those tie down loops on the side rail of the trailer would work well as an anchor point.
2, Someone else said it, but even though you just bought those new super singles, I think you should switch them out for duals instead. Yes, super singles are better in the snow and mud, but if you have 1 blow out, it will likely destroy the rim if you try to limp it to safety, if you have duals, you can keep driving until you can pull over.
3, A little tip for driving that 10spd and reducing gear grind is when you're shifting, come fully off the accelerator as you're pulling it out of gear and sliding it into the next gear, then reapply the accelerator when you upshift. I drove a 10spd for a few years pulling hills fully loaded and very rarely ground gears, even when floating.

Congratulations on the CDL!!!! Welcome to the trucker brotherhood!
You are right on the 13 vs 10. You didnt grind much, mostly butter.
Few suggestions from a guy that hauled cars cross country.
Before you lower airbags to unhook it is beet to pull forward just slightly. Do this so the kingpin doesn't get caught in 5wheel jaws.
Have a basic tool kit and always include tools/parts for electrical components. All the vibrations and road grime the electric systems take a beating. I mean you are a beast mechanic so sure you have the tools.
On your winch I would suggest building a plate in the center of the trailer, so you dont loose space on the deck. It is also a good idea to put a backing plate for the mounting bolts so they dont pull through.
Get the ramps out of the cab bud. Where is the swamper/lot lizard gona sit lol. JK but for real strap them to trailer. You dont want to hear that noise and DOT doesn't like loose items in cab.
Get some over the wheel straps. If you need to tiedown to suspension use chains. Those webbing straps will just get cut if they lay over a sharp edge of suspension. Also by strapping tires you let the suspension do what it does which is float.
For your maiden voyage I say it was a huge success!

Great Job / would suggest making a plate for the winch to sit on and better bottom washers or larger bottom plate to sandwich the deck more strength also buy a snatch block to multiply your pull

Congrats on your CDL! I just got mine back at the end of July. As a truck mechanic I will say one thing, get rid of those super singles on the back. Lots of reasons, theyre really expensive, when they blow they will destory EVERYTHING, when you lose one it puts you oos, and they actually add time to repairs because theyre a lot more cumbersome to deal with unless you have the tandem wheel lift that can slide under it and jack it up to pull it out.
Been turning wrenches on them for 10 years and Ive only ever seen heartache come from them.

Hi, job well done, you're a problem solver. About your placement on the highway, here in Europe it's mandatory to stay in the right lane, unless you're overtaking.
Overtaking on the right is NOT allowed, cops slam you with a heavy fine if they see this being done.
The US legislators should implement this law as well, you guys get into some dangerous situations driving in the middle lane, cars overtaking both left and right. I recommend always staying in the right lane, minimizing danger.
    Good luck in the future

Too bad the Duramax got wrecked. Hopefully it is repairable. Thankfully you had only a minor issue on the 'big rig' you were able to fix easily. The new truck seems to be running very well. Good idea to get new tires for your safety and that of others. That you survived Boston area traffic was a real test.
Hopefully your CDL training taught you some important stuff: Swing wide its a freaking trailer. Always do pre-trip and post-trip checks. Always make sure your 5th wheel is locked anytime you make a stop - fuel, go to the potty or park. Change fuel filters, drain water traps for the fuel and air brakes frequently as needed. Make sure going downhill on long steep slopes in a gear lower than went up. Don't forget to pull into truck weigh stations or for inspections as needed. Always check the height with a load on.

  • @Orbacron

Is it difficult to check the injectors on the volvo and see if they are all six spraying full amount at loaded acceleration. Seemed a little hesiation at loaded takeoff. Should be smooth and no missing in full throttle accell from standstill, so you may have a few bad injectors..

  • @richardthomas1743
    @richardthomas1743 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good job driving through that kind of traffic! I hate driving to Boston! I am glad that you had just minor problems with the Volvo and nothing serious. I am not trying to tell you what to do with renting vehicles. Maybe you have the proper insurances to do that, but if you do not I think it is really something to be worried about. If the rented truck registration and insurance is in your name and had the accident hurt somebody I believe that as the registered owner you and your insurance would be held responsible. Something like that can financially break a person. You're a "go getter" and I respect that and wish you all the very best! 👍👍

Secondly my hatred for volvo is crazy, my dad owned one and the previous owner did not take care of it well, so I grew up fixing that god damn truck every time it broke down and needed new parts. The experience from fixing it so much was the only good thing but if I ever decide to get a truck Volvo, Mack, and International are going to be outta the picture.

I've never owned a Duramax but it may have an inertia switch that trips when the truck collides with an object hard enough. The inertia switch cuts the fuel off in case of an accident so if there's power to the electric fuel pump it doesn't keep feeding fuel to the motor or wherever there's a break. That is for in case there's a fire, you don't want to be feeding fuel to it despite diesel's high flashpoint. It may be reset by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery. I don't know though, I've had a vehicle with one and you manually reset it at the switch.
