This band was so far before its time, the Christian church didn't know what to do with them. I love them, before they came out with their first album I had wrote them a letter and ordered their demo. When I got my demo of vengeance, I was wondering why I didn't get a response on my letter. So I turned on the demo and I listen to it and I turned it on the other side to see what was on it, it was actually Rodger Martinez parsley answering every question that I had on my letter. I still pray for my brother that God would change his heart, as a young teenager what he did for me and the time that he took out to answer my letter was pretty special.

Loved watching your Jack Black routine while listening to this song. This one brings back memories. Btw, you simply have to visit Believer. Their first 3 albums especially were all great. They evolved into this prog thrash thing that was unique at the time and have since reformed to continue down that path. I am pretty sure they were the first metal band to introduce symphonic and opera elements into their sound. I recommend Gone of of Dimensions ( although that entire album is nearly perfect ) or Dies Irae from Sanity Obscure. You can basically put the track listing of the first three records on a dart board though and whatever you hit will be a worthy song.

I grew up in a Christian home, with extremely overbearing (abusive) parents. I was also in to extreme metal/hardcore/punk/industrial. I loved Vengeance. Now, all these years later, I'm watching this and realizing the opening guitar work is VERY similar to "Evil Dead" by Florida band Death, from Scream Bloody Gore, which came out in May of 1987. One year before Human Sacrifice. I owned both albums at the time, and probably noticed back then, but I'd completely forgotten. Also, both guitar riffs are variations on the theme from the movie Phantasm. Vengeance's guitar piece is closer to the Phantasm theme than Death's, but I recommend anyone listen to all three masterpieces.

Very cool. I haven’t heard them in quite a while. Grew up, listening to Christian punk, thrash, etc. I was never a huge fan of his voice, but the first two albums have some amazing riffs and songs. I did see them in 93 but unfortunately it was the second lineup, not the original. And there was a big big difference. Great players, but the vibe it was not the same and they didn’t concentrate on the older songs, which are far superior. The Spotify list you mentioned is pretty solid recommendations for other good songs by them, but you should definitely listen to Can’t Get Out on Once Dead.
Meanwhile, while I’m here, I highly recommend the Crucified. The first album is self titled and the second album is called Pillars of Humanity. There’s a fair difference, both in sound and production quality between the two. The first is punk thrash, and a little Hardcore, and the second is more straight up thrash.

When the original lineup fall apart, lead singer is said to purchase the rights to Vengeance Rising from the band. Then the band tried to reform Vengeance Rising, but Roger Martin threatened lawsuit - so they rename themselves die-happy to avoid the possible lawsuit. This is what I read somewhere about a decade ago, not sure where, or a video clip about Rogers' atheism views of God and christianity.

I still have their t-shirt with the "Human Sacrifice" album cover somewhere as a keepsake. And you're right, he's got an amazing voice, one of the few "cookie monster" vocalists I like because it sounds good and you can actually (with a few listens) understand most of what he's saying. :) They are solidly in my list of top Christian metal bands, along with Deliverance, Bloodgood, Sacred Warrior, Barren Cross, and Stryper (among several others).

Saw them on their first tour through Minneapolis and hung out with Roger Martinez, the vocalist. He tried to talk me and my buddy into a pyramid scheme selling Melaleuca products. Lol. Dude was a hustler from back in the day. Very interesting guy and did a total flip-flop and now he's recovering from cancer and trying to get a re-release of the original album with different lyrics. Not sure if he'll get to it but that would be pretty cool.
We took him to Red lobster and he had the swordfish. Lol. Played pool with the other dudes in the band before they did their set. Down to earth cool guys. Sorry things didn't work out for them financially. It also was the thing that sparked Rogers departure from the band and from the faith. Crazy story....

    Fun Facts"
    1. The band was first called just Vengeance.
    2. That's Pastor Bob's hand, he founded the "Sanctuary" rock and roll church
    3. Crucifixion was through the wrists, not the hands as a nail through the hand would not hold up the body.
    4. Many Christian bookstores would not carry this album because of the cover.
    5. The only band of this genre I know of that has blues-scale based guitar solos.

still listen to this band today. i thought that dual guitar sound from the first album was on par with the best metal bands.

The Crucified, Deliverance, Tourniquet and Vengeance Rising were the "big four" of Christian Thrash.

The only albums I got in to were Human Sacrifice and Once Dead. After that things just went totally sideways.

Saw these guys in 90/91 but cannot remember the line up(other than Martinez) 2 other interesting notes- they had to add "Rising" to their name after a conflict with anotherband of the same name- you'll see the updated name on the same covers. After becoming an atheist, he announced he became a satanist. He reached out to me personally in the 2000s to invest with him...weird He got my info from mail ordering from them in early 90s.... no matter what happened, the first 3 albums remain amazing

I wouldn't be a Christian today if not for this record. It was so important that I hand copied the lyrics word for word with a red pen.

First time seeing one of your vids. Clearly you have a penchant for music when you strum & drum along on your “first listen”, but rather curious that you mouth the lyrics - like you’ve heard it before..?

I get that alot haha and I understand, but I promise ALL of the songs I do on First Listens are first listens, it would be boring for me to listen and then record, if I have an skills at all it is air drums, air guitar, air tambourine and air vocals...

The lead singers got kind of like that Tasmanian Devil sound to his voice like some other singers I've heard before

The thing that nobody seems to know about Vengeance Rising is that the singer became a Satanist and later an atheist. The band eventually broke up after that but I believe he continued to make music and preach against Christianity.
