I’ve tussled with defining art for myself, feeling that it is ‘objects and performances predominantly intended to evoke an emotional response’. I’m open to debate, but by this homebrew definition boardgames are definitely art.
To me, board games are art because of the experience they create for the players. Is just like in film, a single frame can be considered art, but the whole thing only works when played.
The universe is made up of just protons and Neutrons, and yet it can make every element and molecule. It is inanimate and yet it makes life. I would say Art is when we make something that somehow is more than what it is. Generally with an emotional component. Ironically this could be used to slightly apply a metric by which we can measure how art something is. By that difference of how much it creates in excess of what it is. The Mona Lisa is small and simple and yet renownedly loved. Monopoly is art in its ability to illicit the appropriate emotion when someone mentions capitalism. Clue is art in its ability to tell an ever changing murder mystery story. Chutes and Ladders is less art than it used to be thousands of years ago. When it had more meaning to what it was doing. Art is us taking that step to transcend simple humanity towards something more than life. And board games are very much part of that. They served as a cultural salve for Germany after the world wars. A reminder that we can go exist together and still be competitive and have fun and not attack anyone. Eventually they have a chance to be one of the best forms of art. Although at this rate VR will probably overtake it. (Also clearly by this definition Tiny Epic games are High art (small box big game))
Thanks Matt, this is an interesting idea! So when something is more than the sum of its parts the extra that is added is the 'art'! Also, who doesn't love tiny epic games, so this checks out for me :)
@@cogitodesign from what I can see not enough people love Tiny Epic games lol And yeah, although to be more accurate I would say that "the extra" is where art lives, but the art isn't quite guaranteed and all of the extra isn't art? Maybe ? But it certainly helps explain why it is so hard to define
Fantastic video, I loved it!! 😁👏🏼 Philosophy has been an interest of mine since high school. I enjoyed this deep dive into the question. For me, it is undeniably art. 🖼️
Great deep dive! I think sometimes posing the question is more important than finding the answer. A lot has to do with the intention of the designers, it can be a simple product or a work of art, in my opinion. Now off I go to get a cat just to name them Kant!
I’m sorry I’m not exactly sure what you mean with your question at the end. If you’re looking for board game definitions we have a series of these in our ‘TH-cam short’ section which you can check out. Enjoy!

Thanks for your comment 👍 You raise a good point, I think Wittgenstein would happily include your definition in his great rope!

Couldn’t agree more! I think this is a great analogy. Thanks for commenting ☺️
What do I think?: Cool. Very.
Thanks so much 🙌

Thanks so much! I couldn’t agree more ☺️ Given what we both do, we might be a little biased 😂
