As someone with a PhD in philosophy, I work in a technology company and I am not happy. I continue only because I have to make a living. The state of academia in Turkey is terrible. It was good to see this video when I was completely hopeless. Thank you. Happy new year
Jared, keep doing what you're doing - in front of and away from the camera. People respond because we see your passion, your thoughtfulness, your intellect, and your care. We love your work and wish for you and yours a lovely 2025.
There are a lot of people, me included, who would never go to university for philosophy/literature but still want to give themselves a full 'classical' education. I think it would do you a lot of good to tap into this niche more. I got a lot of value out of your "Beginner-Friendly Philosophy Books" video for example, and you could totally expand that into a video for each school of thought, philosopher, etc.
In one of his videos, he said "I'd be more impressed if you told me you read one book last year, but read it well, than if you speed-read a hundred books". I appreciated that.
I knew you were going to thrive in a self-employed environment. I have a friend who makes his living on TH-cam who told me he couldn't possibly make the kind of videos I make -- he *needs* a script. I, on the other hand, can't imagine following a script. That you're able to do either or both amazes me. If you keep making videos, I'll keep watching them, especially the ones about books. Happy New Year from Denton, TX!
I don’t comment often but I’ve been following both your channels since their inceptions and you’re a big inspiration to me! Your courage and erudition spurred me on to start my own TH-cam channel nine months ago. & I’m also a new dad to a little boy of 3 months! Just wanted to say thanks for your phenomenal content and congratulations on hitting this 6 month milestone. Your prosperity is fully deserved! Bring on the next 6 months!
So true that we eat healthier when we are satisfied with our work and life in general. I'm so happy for you, and I hope you will write your own book and that people would love it.
This is inspiring. I was laid off from my job five months ago. After countless applications, interviews, final stage interviews, and ultimately rejections, feeling incredibly disillusioned with it all. I wish I could do something which feeds my soul like you're doing. Hopefully one day.
So proud of you man. I lost my job in February and just got a job in June in SaaS, it has been so hard. This year the goal is to lose weight, start a booktube channel, and work on my substack...maybe one day I can do it full time like you :)
Thank you for updating us, Jared. I’m glad to hear that this transition into full-time content creation on You-Tube and Substack is going well. I look forward to your upcoming videos in 2025. Happy New Year!
Stoked for you Jared. I spent over a decade in tech before I started taking my channel seriously. I resonated with many of the benefits you mentioned relating to health and happiness. Looking forward to your book and more of your videos. My best to you
Hi Jared 👋. I've lost my job over the Christmas period. But like you I'm look at it as a good thing. Don't have a TH-cam channel. But I'm look to do something different for my work life. Thank you for sharing this with us and happy new year everyone.
I think this is the first time I’ve seen this secondary channel and it’s really great to hear this news. I probably found you in the last 2-3 years, maybe less, because I have been struggling with getting more reading in and you’ve come up in that journey. (Still struggling but that’s another conversation!) You’re a real natural on TH-cam. So many channels are just more of the same but you’re bringing real value - to lots of us who’ve never commented before, like me until I press the send button in a moment. Please keep doing what you’re doing! Love it.
I've been in the midst of a personal renaissance, trying to go more analog and get back to the basics. I used to love reading, and had gotten away from it. Your channel, along with Tristan and Great Books Prof and a few others, have been key in opening my eyes to a lot. I'm stingy with subs but you got one from me. Keep it up, you are good at what you do.
This video was recommended to me on my homepage and I couldn't agree more. Time is a finite resource, we can always earn more money, but we cannot get back the time we're spent.
I've really enjoyed your videos over the last several months since I discovered your work and I sincerely hope that you continue to create and find success. I want to live in a world where passionate people can teach things that truly matter and foster community and humanity and be rewarded for it. Wishing you all the best.
Jared, I've started following you on TH-cam and now an avid reader of your Substack. So grateful for the deep, enlightening work you produce. If at some point you decided to put together an in-person seminar focused on deep-reading philosophy, I'd sign up instantly and I bet a bunch of folks following you would too.
Love the philosophy focus on main channel, but also really appreciate the videos on here! ^^__^^ You are truly an inspiration for philosophy, books, reading etc
Im a quiter too. Currently unemployed. I have plenty of time to try and do TH-cam. Every day I'm hopeful I'll make something, anything. Everyday i make nothing, cause i can't decide what to make. Or i think there is just no way it's gonna work out. Just damn. Idk, anyway goodluck to you.
Don’t think about whether it will work out. Experiment. It’s free- well, it costs some time. I have no idea what I’m doing. I post about books in hopes I’ll make one online book friend but- crickets. I have work so at least I won’t starve.
I love that you have a back channel for us hardcore Jared fans and that you found positives in losing your tech job. Funny how those paradigm shifts reveal doors that were always there but couldn't see.
I'm a longtime viewer, but rare commenter of your work. I've seen your channel go through a number of changes over the past couple of years but I've genuinely been interested in following along with anything that you do. You're passion and intelligence shines through regardless of the content you choose to create and I'm glad to hear that you've begun to feel more satisfied and proud of the work you do, because you should. I definitely feel that you should keep making whatever you feel most proud of, regardless of what that may be, and I think you can trust that it will land with an audience.
Hey man, found your main channel not so long ago. I have watched so many videos now and I am truly appreciative of the work you do!! Keep up the good work and I definitely am looking forward to your growth in the future. Happy new year!!
I started watching you last week, I’ve watched a majority of your videos and some of them multiple times. I used to read a lot when I was younger but hadn’t properly picked one up in years. Watching you made me want to read again. I’ve started the Nicomachean Ethics, following along with the substack. Thank you so much 🎉
Much love to you Jared. Since finding you a couple months ago I've loved your content, even the content you say you were less than happy with. It's shown me a lot as another tech worker what I've been missing from life and what could be out there if I look for it. Your comments about your personal life improvement were especially motivating for me. Thanks for being you :)
Jared, I gotto say what you say resonates so strongly with me. Also became a new dad last year, got disillusioned with my job and had a parting of ways also in May incidentally, and have been stuck in my head for too long in making videos on TH-cam. Everyone on here keeps talking about trying to fit into a certain mold to fit with the algorithm. The one big takeaway I got from this story (besides the striking amount of parallels including living in Texas), is to just make things I'm proud of and that really matter. I am kind of curious though how you're balancing being at home as a dad (I'm a stay at home dad), and running this channel. When I took over in May last year of my 3 month old baby, I just had no energy to think and do anything. Putting together a video, scripting, editing takes so much time.
I will take the chance to say thank you so much for all you have done until now. Your videos and articles have been the key push to make me read more and start my blog. I look forward to what you will bring this year and to follow the reading challenge and the substack read-along with you.
Your impact on most us will not go unnoticed. Thank you Jared for simply being yourself and sharing with us. Really glad to hear that overall you doing good :)
I love your content. It’s very refreshing to see intellectual and thought provoking subjects be brought forth. I’m glad to hear that things are going well for you doing something you love.
I remember watching your video when you lost your job. And I remember thinking -- this guy's going to be better off if he keeps this up. And here I am watching you months later and I couldn't be happier for you. Your story is an inspiration for anyone feeling purposeless and adrift -- it's not too late to reevaluate and make changes, big or small. Happy for your success and looking forward to more videos here and there from you.
Jared, I do not know how much it may mean to you since I am a complete stranger, but I am very proud of you. I believe our philosophical positions can not be more distant, I am a convinced atheist, a firm analytic philosopher, but I really appreciate how you make philosophy available for a broad public without making it pop or oversimplified. This second channel is a great idea, and I really appreciate it. I wish you the best. I will keep following both channels. Keep on respecting yourself and your ideas: nothing has more value. Thank you. P.S. Quitting my work after twenty years of killing of my soul has been the best decision I ever made in my life: I know I am privileged because I managed my finances so that now I can live with the money I have saved. But today I really do not need much money. As you said, money matters. But if one is able to let will and consumerism behind, then not much is needed, and one starts to appreciate what one has. And it is so beautiful.
really glad this is working out for you and your family, jared. i think i'm addicted to your voice at this point, i've seen about 98% of your videos. bought some of your recommended books (i consider you an adviser to my nascent journey in philosophy). when i can, i'll upgrade to paid subscription to your substack. thank you so much for posting some articles for free. and yes, i noticed a sharp upgrade in the quality and thoughtfulness of your contents when you did this full-time. looking forward to more.
Happy to see the evolution and success along with the physical + mental health improvements. Working as an influencer/creative in the fitness space for years, I understand the pressures of serving an audience, financial incentives, and balancing an algorithm vs. personal interest. Seeing the growth both on TH-cam and behind the scenes since I subscribed ~2 years ago is inspiring to see. I'm excited to see you continue to flourish this year!
I'm very glad you are doing well! It's great to know that is possible to earn a living through things you love, because we tend to forget these days. Most people we are working for companies that treat us like disposable objects. Thanks, Jared and keep up the good work!
¡Hola Jared! 🇲🇽
I love what your bring to the world. Work on your hooks (they don't even have to be directly related to the subject) and consider using cuts to improve retention. You've got an important message/material to share, but the internet has robbed most of us of our attention spans.
Hi! I lost my job in tech a year ago... I feel you, my friend. I'm doing Uber and TH-cam and honestly, I'm a bit happier now that I ever was in corporate. Keep on going... you are doing great things...
I love that you say out loud that we (us, people all over the world) really don't need all that money to have a good life. Our choices, our few years here is a matter of being content, not about collecting and adding. I do listen and hear more and more people say this, but you as a large profil on TH-cam ... so glad to hear these words said out loud. Thank you! And btw, libraries, online and physical is a great invention 😊
Love to hear that. I am a 1 year ahead substack guy and wouldn't be if I didn't have the feeling you're a good guy.. you could be awful still haha but I like you and your content. I was interested in philosophy before but definitely started reading more and looked at different books thanks to your substack. It's good to know you're healthier, happier and radiate that outwards as well for your loved ones. Edit: just realised this is 3 weeks old. YT just showed me haha
I also lost my job six months ago, and I completely agree. It is a good thing, and it helps a lot to open your eyes to things that you previously didn't pay attention to. My mental health improved, my outlook on life changed, and I can spend more free time with my family and friends. Money was never really the key to happiness, it was time.
Just found your channel. This is inspiring too, 2024 was quite the challenge for work, still not in the zone where I feel recovered or onto a path that feels solid, but hopeful for 2025. I plan to check out your writings too.
I'm glad this came up on my feed at the perfect time. I'm getting laid off next week. Everybody keeps offering their sympathy, but tbh it's not a nice place to work and I'm sort of glad to be getting out. Now I'm at a crossroads where I need to work out what to do with my career and life. I'm staying positive that this could end up being one of the best things to happen to me, but depends on how the next few months work out. Glad to hear it's been a positive for youand there's more to life than working yourself into stress and depression
We will never know each other, truly. But I am nonetheless genuinely happy that you're walking a much happier path and improved your health. Always cool to see others being happy. :)
From a fellow tech worker, I love your videos! Could you make I’m one in the future about stoicism in the lens of having goals, ambitions, and not becoming cynical or nihilistic? I feel a struggle to follow stoicisms principles without falling into that trap where nothing really matters. Thank you and keep up!
Wow man, I found myself in almost the same situation last year. I have a son and I am the only income earner in my house. Although my other youtube channel isn't making enough to be full-time, I was able to start up a production business and have been able to make that work while also making more income from my TH-cam as I slowly work on making my two channels my full-time job. Love the videos from both your channels and I really appreciated this video.
Happy to hear that things are going well! I have done my best to support you in every non-monetary way I can (I am a grad student in philosophy, so I am sure you can imagine), but if you discover new ways, please do not feel like a sell-out if you take advantage of them! On another note, would you ever consider making dialogues? I am an ancient philosophy guy, so it is no surprise that I would suggest it, but I still think it could be an interesting thing to experiment with. Given your interest in both fiction and non-fiction writing, I think it could be a cool way to combine both. Anyway, good to hear all is well. Best to you and yours.
crazy how algo finds you when it's needed. first time here, and I just lost my job (today?!) and lucikly I predicted this so I already have an offer from a shitty company. so, hearing your brave story (especially since you have a family to take care of) I'm starting to have second thoughts. Doing it safe way and accept this shitty job (better pay, less freedom) or reject them and look for the best next step. Sometimes I envy people in the US for their mentality and relationship with money and what success means. In Europe we play it much more safe, unfortunately 😢
Authenticity…stay true to YOURSELF 🙏🏽 You’ll never really know what people will resonate with and for me I tend to tap the 🔔 and sub someone who sounds more unscripted and people who don’t repeat themselves…of course topics that are intelligently interesting which (for me) is always helpful. I totally enjoyed this video and look forward to hearing that 🔔 ring when you put up something new. Thank you. And congrats on freeing yourself! Thanks Jared for an honest real person kind of share. I hope you can give yourself permission to not be so critical of yourself ;) Happy New Year!
First time viewer here, congrats on this fantastic content! You are so clear, so relateable. Please keep on making videos, they are great. If I may I would suggest, if you are discontented with a previous video make a part 2, to elaborate on the topic more. A lot of people also like the 10 top/worst books/articles/films etc videos. Maybe that is something easy to do and attracts more people to the channel. Also I personally would be interested in your opinion on depiction of philosophers in films. Often so cliché, right? Other inrerests of mine are female philosophers and international philosophers (not Greeks and Europeans all the time, there ia so much more out there), as well as your take on many philosophical roots tend to be intertwined in religions. How do you perceive that?
Do you advice for an artist who just started? Making vids about creative thing, personal artwork, and art website...I would think your experience in tech helped in figuring out the algorithm and how and when to post, I appreciate your transparency and honesty, great video man
The short version: Things are going well, in large part because of the wonderful community who watch my videos and read my articles on Substack.
What is your main channel?
@@kevinhove6893 It's in the description: @_jared
@@RadarHeron Thanks!
Can you talk about why you hated being in tech? You only briefly mentioned it around 9:30 and I'm sure people would like to hear about that. Cheers.
Ay respect for the summary
Correction, Jared. Six months after finding a new and more fulfilling job.
Love that outlook. That was mine too lol
you are a sweetheart, and that's right.
As someone with a PhD in philosophy, I work in a technology company and I am not happy. I continue only because I have to make a living. The state of academia in Turkey is terrible. It was good to see this video when I was completely hopeless. Thank you. Happy new year

Hi! I lost my job in tech a year ago... I feel you, my friend. I'm doing Uber and TH-cam and honestly, I'm a bit happier now that I ever was in corporate. Keep on going... you are doing great things...
Happy to hear it :) Love your work!
Very good news. I'm glad things are going well for you.
Very glad things are going well!
Happy to hear that you're succeeding - I often dream about doing something similar.
I’ve really been enjoying your new channel.
Good...for...you...it is good to know that good guys win also. Keep up the good work
So happy, both for you and for Philosophy TH-cam in general.
I love the self analysis.
thank you jared for your content really inspire me deep dive into more philosophy personally
Good luck. Vehicle life saved me.
Audio and video quality is great!
I love your videos. You inspired me to read more books about Philosophy.
Definitely an inspiration
like this 2nd channel since not into philosophy, glad u are doing well.
you inspire me
crazy how algo finds you when it's needed. first time here, and I just lost my job (today?!) and lucikly I predicted this so I already have an offer from a shitty company. so, hearing your brave story (especially since you have a family to take care of) I'm starting to have second thoughts.
I hope you can give yourself permission to not be so critical of yourself ;)
Happy New Year!
Purpose. That says it all.
Lost my job too. Been at this TH-cam stuff since 2009 - time to get serious :)
Same here…I quit things if they aren’t going well.
