@@MetallicBlade How can you compare an 6th generation OG Xbox and a 7th generation early PS3? They aren't even in the same console generation. Of course the OG Xbox is more reliable because it's under less load with far less complexity. Mine was very reliable too until the disc drive quit. Notice how you almost never see any Xenon, Falcon or Zephyr Xbox 360's anymore? It's because they are all long gone from the Red Ring. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 had issues at the start of the 7th console generation but the difference is that there are still launch model PS3's that work and you can buy. Sure it's not common, but try to find a working launch model Xenon 360. It's almost impossible because of the *over 50% failure rate.* The PS3 was a far more reliable console than the 360 throughout it's entire lifespan and that's just a fact. You just got unlucky.
I went through the gauntlet of the YLOD with my launch 60gb. Paid to have it reballed with leaded solder, updated the power supply to one that drew less amps, upgraded the fan to one with more fins, reflowed it several times (even tried the MOBO oven method), copper shims between the heat sink and no matter what I did it would YLOD again after a few months.... everytime. I picked up a barely used one with original firmware several years ago and will be de-liding the IHS and applying liquid metal.
I still have fat 60 PS3 that’s still working without issue. The only thing I’ve done to it is keeping the vents clear of dust, haven’t even taken out the hard s drive. Played MWII on it before the rerelease & watch Blue rays when the Internet goes out.
Every fat ps3 I have owned has had some sort of cooling mod. When you can drop the CPU and GPU temps by 10 degrees during gameplay, that is going to make a difference in the longevity of the consoles.
Not sure if the fan actually helps. The ps3 was designed with airflow moving from one part of the unit out through the other. Adding a fan disrupts this airflow, the fan is also sitting half way on top of the powersupply. I believe the PS on these console generations had no holes on the top, this just makaes the efficiency of the fan worse.
This may sound crazy to some but the best "upgrade" for a PS2 and PS3 is a CRT. Preferably one capable of both 240/480i and 480p. PS2 games look and play better on a CRT. You lose a ton of detail to poor upscaling on an HD flat-screen. Plus light gun compatibility. The PS3 looks and runs better on a 480p CRT than on a 1080p flat-screen. Most PS3 games max out at 720p and almost no displays are native 720p. So you lose performance and image quality to scaling. Plus... 720p maxes out the performance capability of a PS3 which causes overheating. In Time Crisis 4 you only get 30fps in 720p but 60fps in 480p. I use my tri-sync crt arcade monitor and I see details on PS3 games that are simply missing on my 4k Oled.
Yeah the engineers put alot of time in but they also had a budget to get in under, u can make upgrades to the cooling systems of any console and make improvements from stock...
The PS3s that failed had defective substrate cheemistry IIRC. As long as they're kept below 70 degrees C, they should not fail. This implies some method of delid on Cell or the fan will be very loud on most consoles one manages to get now.
List of mod that actually work. -changing the 15 blade fan for the 19 blades fan. -delid of procesors. -external power supply. -holes only if you use external power supply. -changing the nec tokin capacitors. -new custom fan curve. Other stuff is a waste of time and money and it will put in danger your console especially that mother bending eraser mod.
My two PS3 Fat (PS2 compatible) with back hole and delid + liquid metal perform at 50° with 38% fan speed. I have improve process with RE-LID after that (same material as original, thermal glue for RSX and thermal silicon for CELL). Thank NSC god for the delid tool. I have killed many consoles whitout. But now I can DELID in chain with no risk. I have remove the alimentation cap. The machines are overcloked too (OC dont up temperature because no more tension are added). The DELID operation need practice and good tool for be safe. You must train with dead console before try anything (one secret was too never retire the blade before the end of process and just turn whit it on corner). This is the benefit of two year work on the question.
These old backwards compatible ps3 consoles tend to run very hot. They also are prone to the red light of death. They can be fixed if that happens by just baking the motherboard at 400° for 15 mins. Or you can have a Profesional reinstall the cpu, but that is very costly and time consuming.
While yes engineers have made the air flow the way it is but only to appease a certain form factor design, board placement etc. The point is if the cooling is better than that means it will last longer. I would have definitely put a dust filter behind that fan and keep it the hell away from any water but really at the end of the day part of me would just want to replace the entire case for a custom one focusing on cooling optimization. Especially for those ps3's.
I have a similar fan mod i did to my ps3 slim even wired the speed control into the ps3's original fan control. Been using it for years and its still going strong 💪and yeah u goto repaste while ur in there.
That mad won't help. The problem is the sh*tty tin solder they used at the time. It will heat up, cool off until the solder will develop hairline cracks and your console will fail.
I am not intimately familiar with the cooling design of the fat PS3. If they tend to overheat then this might be a good solution. Quality wise it doesn't seem that bad for a homemade mod.
So... you overpaid by $400-500 a phat YLOD phat is cheap, and the mod is what you need to fix that anyway in most cases. I guess there is some risk that the mod fails but.... 2nd try is only the same $400+ YLOD PS3 cost.
pro's also say that cooler hardware runs better and last longer.. People just need to know what they're doing before doing anything and also this way we swich form just being consumers to creators by making what we buy last longer.. Its probably easier to clean form dust also and switch a broken fan.
Ya they messed up the air pressure its positive now. Thats why ur stock one is sucking in air from the side vent and the modded one is blowing it out through there. More air flow means quicker dust build-up also. But its region locked so it has no purpose as a backwards compatible. Should be significantly cheaper than that.
like a 12 years ago after removing the bottom panel of the laptop, I cut a square in the plastic with a knife so that I could glue the fan to the laptop gpu area :D and it helped!!! :D I used to play games by placing my laptop on top of books, because the computer could no longer be placed straight, but I didn't pay attention to it because it was important to play without heating up the gpu and processor, because the cold air helped alot to coo the processor a bit also , in a word - the solution is proven here!! :D
I just purchased a cecha01 on ebay for $127.25 said was parts due to no video signal but a video signal reset fixed it but I know a lot of ps3's claim backwards compatibility but it was only the A0 models that actually incorporated ps2 hardware inside the ps3 system that made the difference while the E0 models could only emulate this through software unfortunate really given that if you own a ps5 this would grant you 5 generations of just pure awesomeness that was and is the Playstation catalog
The only way to prevent this model of PS3 from YLOD is to do Frankenstein mode. Basically is swapping processor from PS3 super slim to 60GB model. This is lowering down temps to acceptable area. Also is good to change NEC/TOLKIN if you are doing processor swap, they are also responsible partially for YLOD. Not cheep but if you want to have a rare model that will last much longer I think is worth it.
Delid of the processor is the only solution. The cell processor normal temp is 70c. The syscon runs quiters alternating the fan speeds between the min 20% and 25% and temps ranging 68c-72c.
It’s definitely something but I feel like the backwards compatible should not be messed with externally. I’ve repasted my chips (not delidded yet) and runs at 30% fan at 60°c, ofc on CFW

Despite all the time the engineers put into the PS3, they made a number of critical errors, the worst of them (in my opinion) being, they opted to use lead-free solder, which is inferior, and led to a LOT of launch PS3s dying, especially when used in a vertical orientation. The cooling system was also not designed very well. It could have been more effective, if sony hadn't prioritized manufacturing cost savings, over end product quality.
I would done a better job at that custom ps3 by installing a car radiator with a full size radiator fan and a coolant reservoir , water pump with pipes. Add some rgb and a custom lithium power supply to power up that custom Sleek cooling system.
Engineers are stuck with size and a price point, not always the best cooling solution. My new 4090 is 4 slots thick with a massive heat sink and 3 fans on it. The size of that heatsink is a good cooling solution.

Long ago, I paid $300 for it used only for it to yellow-light on my after four months. One of my most regretful tech purchases I've had.
Compared to a $20 untested original Xbox... that has been a reliable tank.
The holes below change the aitflow and restric air to the power supply. That is why they put another fan on top.
You'd want more airflow going with the natural designed airflow, intake and outtake, not holes on the back or side.
My dumbass thought he got sent an empty box forgetting he already took it out 😂😂
No you’re right lol, the console was packaged outside of the box because it didn’t fit in the box
This mod is pretty clean, and actually pretty well done at the end. Price is really fair
if cutting a hole in the top of a PS3 is a clean mod to you, I don't even want to know what your idea of a bad mod is 🤣
@@busterscrugsI mean, have you seen other mods? This is cleaner than your average mod
A Frankie from Computer Booter is the ULTIMATE ps3.
Make holes in case is good for cpu and gpu but is bad for others electrical components, the airflow from the case will be changed.
I used to remove the power supply metal top too back in 2007 when I used to repair these. Glad smart minds think alike
4:19 you glitched man haha
Better than my PS3 :(
Sad how my PS3 and my family's PS3 is not backwards compatible.
Just sell em then and buy a backwards compatible PS3 ;)
@@amazingamazigh1538 I have made progress on that thing since 2012
Yeah the engineers put alot of time in but they also had a budget to get in under, u can make upgrades to the cooling systems of any console and make improvements from stock...
The power supply isn't exposed when the fan is covering it.
Yes it is lol, there are pretty massive gaps around the fan
Jacob feel like someone who would work at a pawn shop I like him.
I guess I’ll take that as a compliment? Haha
@@jrob0021you're pretty observant and knowledge, i think that's what they were trying to say haha
Reason you need the extra airflow it's because when you turn the 3D on are heats up a lot more and crashes
The PS3s that failed had defective substrate cheemistry IIRC. As long as they're kept below 70 degrees C, they should not fail.
This implies some method of delid on Cell or the fan will be very loud on most consoles one manages to get now.
Some of the frankenstein mod guys list delidding and replacing TIM as mandatory part of the mod required for warranty.
4:16 there is a frozen video in couple of seconds
That's just his brain lagging in real time. Happens to the best of us.
That poor PS3.
I have a similar fan mod i did to my ps3 slim even wired the speed control into the ps3's original fan control. Been using it for years and its still going strong 💪and yeah u goto repaste while ur in there.
That pause after the language change made me think my internet went out
That mad won't help.
Trust me any one that has a fat PS3 is familiar lol. Thing turns int a Jet engine running Skyrim and the like.
How is it surprising adding at 120mm fan would make it cooler?
I've done this on my PS3 as it kept on dying. I couldn't work out if the fan failed or the fan wasn't getting the power. Boy was it loud lol
I bought a Frankenstein PS3 for a little over $1000. I’ve been very happy with it. I can play The Last of Us without the fan going crazy.
So... you overpaid by $400-500 a phat YLOD phat is cheap, and the mod is what you need to fix that anyway in most cases.
With american ps2 games on japan ps3 change the region settings to usa to play them
I have a working BC PS3 still working, do you know if the seller will do this mod if provided with one?
9:30 it doesn't get exposed not only for safety but also electromagnetic interference. Your phone and any ham radios would be affected near that turd.
Ah good point
All plugs have earth cables built inside of them in the UK
I wonder if it's lucky or expected that the regular fans didn't get spun the wrong way by the aftermarket ones.
That fan is for pulling the smoke out as cooking your meat in the Grill station 3.
It’s definitely something but I feel like the backwards compatible should not be messed with externally. I’ve repasted my chips (not delidded yet) and runs at 30% fan at 60°c, ofc on CFW
I miss the letters, tea and origami you get from Japanese Ebay sellers. I've even received a letter in proper Finnish. Once you get into importing from Japan, you'll start using better services, and proxies, and they obviously don't send tea and origami to locals hehe.
4:14 LMFAO
Despite all the time the engineers put into the PS3, they made a number of critical errors, the worst of them (in my opinion) being, they opted to use lead-free solder, which is inferior, and led to a LOT of launch PS3s dying, especially when used in a vertical orientation. The cooling system was also not designed very well. It could have been more effective, if sony hadn't prioritized manufacturing cost savings, over end product quality.
Probably done on purpose
I would done a better job at that custom ps3 by installing a car radiator with a full size radiator fan and a coolant reservoir , water pump with pipes. Add some rgb and a custom lithium power supply to power up that custom Sleek cooling system.
I see everyone claim to be better at building custom consoles, yet they are nowhere to be found lol..
First love your videos and loved the Texas load series keep up the work
Engineers are stuck with size and a price point, not always the best cooling solution. My new 4090 is 4 slots thick with a massive heat sink and 3 fans on it. The size of that heatsink is a good cooling solution.
I always run mine at max and wear headphones. I rather replace a fan first than anything else.
This is amazing very awesome console
They did not replace the capacitors so you will still get the YLOD.
the thing is from what ive experienced building pcs, the fan they attached wasnt even a good one it was just a cheap model, if you got something like a noctua or a arctic fan it would work very nicely
That is actually a good idea. The old ps3's were always getting hot and breaking.
