    You missed the most important part on how to activate the fonts in FontBase so that they show up in Photoshop and every other Adobe app. Here's how: To activate all fonts in the collection, provided you already imported those font folders into Fontbase, simply click on the white circle next to "Inactive". This will move them all to "Active" and the white circle will become solid green next to "Active". Obviously if you have thousands of fonts, you might not go crazy and activate them all since it will bring your computer to a crawl. Use your judgement, be selective by creating collections that you can activate or deactivate based on need before launching Photoshop or the like.

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes i did activate it but it is a bit buggy and it didnt work for me.

    • @Nachovyx
      @Nachovyx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Question from a new user: what does activating these fonts do for you? Do they load faster on PS and/or text programs?

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Nachovyx activating the fonts only makes them accessible in other programs, It doesnt actually install them. A font manager allows you to store your fonts on an external drive and use the font manager to view them. Why do we do this? because having 25,000 fonts installed in your computer would take all the memory and drive space not to mention make photoshop slow as dirt.

    Just a small correction: At 7:30 you said, that you can only change the preview text in the settings. But in fact you can easily change the preview text temporarly by clicking the standard text at the bottom in the middle.

    I found this so helpful...Thank you. I did a few things different (because YOU provided the template) with this video). I thought I would share here in case it helps someone. I created TWO folders on my desktop...one FONTS...the other SYSTEM FONTS. I went to the website you linked to and downloaded the system fonts in the SYSTEM FONTS folder I made on my desktop. I the went and copied my fonts (control panel > appearance...>fonts). I should note that I have a little over 2,900 fonts. I copied by selecting "select all". I then right clicked and chose copy. I then pasted all the fonts into the FONTS folder I made on my desktop. I confirmed that all fonts were in the two folders I made. Once I did that, I deleted all the fonts in the system folder (control panel), NOTE: Some fonts could not be deleted (pop-up message said "protected system fonts". I then copied all the fonts in the SYSTEM FONTS folder on my desktop. I pasted those fonts in the system folder (control panel). NOTE: I felt more secure having the system fonts secured prior to deleting in control panel. I then created a FONTS folder on Google Drive and copied all the fonts from my FONTS folder on my desktop into the Google Drive folder. Google Drive provides 15G cloud storage for free. I had already downloaded fontbase per your guidance.. I went into fontbase settings and changed "root folder" to the Google Drive folder FONTS. The fonts loaded from Google Drive to my fontbase program. I proceeded to make "collections" and dragged and dropped fonts into the "collection" I wanted...sometimes more than one "collection" for the same font. I am currently on "C" fonts...going to take a while lol...can't imagine if I'd had 11,000 fonts! I deleted the 2 folders (FONTS and SYSTEM FONTS) on my desktop. Hope someone finds this useful.

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im glad it was helpful for you, I still am having issues finding a font manager that can house all my fonts Im thinking cloud storage would be the best bet. Its a shame that adobes type kit is useless as it only store adobe fonts but not other fonts.

      @@PhotohackLovers I'm loving fontbase actually. I am doing things differently though. I do not use Google Drive for storing the font file used by fontbase (I DO use Google Drive for a backup folder of my fonts). I prefer being in control of the access to my fonts. I keep a "FONTS" file that fontbase is directed to on my computer. I've found that system resources...load times...lag...are not an issue because only "activated" fonts are being uploaded to affinity photo...not THOUSANDS like before.

    I know it's been a long time since anyone commented but maybe some of what’s in this comment will be useful. I agree that the program can be difficult to figure out and there's so little documentation. That aside I did get it working. So here are a few things I ran across or figured out:
    Working with collections that you create can be easier than it looks at first. You can select more than one font at a time to speed up adding them to a collection.
    Clicking the font's name is likely to open its details page. So instead, click within the line of sample text for that font. You'll know it's selected when the font's name turns blue. To de-select it, on a Windows machine hold down the CONTROL key and click the font's sample text line.
    (COMMAND key on the Mac?)
    To select several fonts _dis_ continuously, hold down CONTROL as you click fonts to select them. To select a _continuous_ range of fonts: Select the first one, go to the line containing the last font you want to select, hold down SHIFT, and click within the sample text again.
    If multiple fonts are selected, hover the mouse over one of them, then drag the pointer over the top of the collection name. This adds _all_ of the selected fonts to the collection. If any of the names you selected are actually a font _family_ the entire family is dragged into the collection.
    As for the colored squares that appear to the left of each font name or font family name, as far as I can tell the color scheme is: Black open square: font is not activated. Green closed square: font is activated or entire font family is activated. Green _open_ square: some fonts within the font family are activated and others aren't.
    I haven't figured out why some of those icons are dots instead of squares. At first I thought a dot meant "OTF" font but this doesn't seem to be the case.

      actually people comment on this daily however, I think most people on here complain about the program being buggy not how its used as that was explained in the video, me and others like myself have had issues with this program working and most of us have computers so powerful we could hack the pentagon, but still this program just doesnt work. @@PhotohackLovers Somehow it's working for me. There are some things I wish it did better and for all that the developer tried to make it elegant-looking, there are some clumsy things in the user interface that need improving (the developer does not seem to be moving like lightning to release new versions or updates).
      Anyway, so far I have been able to get it to do what I need - I guess I should consider myself lucky. I've looked at reviews of a few other font handling tools for Windows and they also look a bit clumsily designed. The other one that you're using and recommending does look like the top of the line. But as someone who doesn't make his living via graphic arts, I can't justify the cost. (And I want to avoid the subscription model when I can.)

    I have a question: can I delete all fonts in my (Windows 10) font folder, and move them to a new folder? I want to clean up the fonts folder, since there is a lot of fonts that I never use (like chinese, arabian etc), and put in a new folder only the fonts that are useful to me. But I'm worring about deleting system and software fonts. What should I do? In W7DF page, there is a link to download Windows 10 Default fonts, but in the package there are only fonts whose names begin with the number 85. I don't see fonts like Arial there.
    UPDATE: I couldn't delete all fonts in my Windows 10 system fonts folder! It seem that the fonts in use and needed by the system are not deleted. It's strange that 90 font's families are still there! Do the system need such amount of fonts? If I can't delete these fonts, can I manage them in Fontbase?

    • @PhotohackLovers

      that's exactly what I did I copied and pasted all my fonts in a new folder, deleted all the system font and reinstalled them. I show you that in the video and a link is provided in the description to re-download the system fonts. Your correct certain system fonts that ship with windows cannot be deleted because of certain applications won't work, I got rid of them by saving out to an external harddrive and re-installing an ssd drive and upgrading to windows pro. I had way to many fonts and it was bogging my computer down.

      @@Esclarecidos no I have never seen anything like that, usually, people collect fonts over the years and organize them into folders themselves, I started out using free fonts but it really left my graphics looking generic and employers and other seasoned graphic designers will be able to tell that you lack typography skills if you just use free fonts. That is the first thing that I notice about designs is the font. People dont think it but fonts are important. Ive spent probably over 5 grand on fonts alone maybe more but those fonts make me tripple in return. Thats how you have to think as a designer.

    Are you a trained designer? I'm having a hard time understanding how you don't see the benefit of changing the text preview background. And glyphs? They are super important for good design!
    The pin is for pinning your selection to the top. I assume so that you can easily access your favorites when you're ready to use them.

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obviously I am :) given the tons of training videos ive done, however I stand by my comment that the glyph preview in fontbase is garbage it doesnt allow you to do anything at all but view it and in addition to that epic failure it also doesnt show all possible glyphs nor does it group like fonts or sets with additional glyphs or swatches. The color button and background button are not at all useful to me as it is most definitely an armature thing to just add a flat color. Im a bright and loud designer thats my style, I usually do a lot of type effects and special effects with my type anyways. My backgrounds vary as well. It just depends. A little background, I was an artist first, I painted and sketched long before i became a designer, so i tend to do everything in black and white first anyways, so I dont need color to determine whether or not a font is appropriate for my design project i guess not needing a color blanket comes with years of experience.
      the pinning feature doesnt add to favorites there is a heart icon next to it that does that, I will have to test whether or not pinning rearranges the order but last time i checked its alphabetical.

    • @drawitout
      @drawitout 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Photohack Lovers It wasn’t my intention to say that pinning would add to your Favourites, as in the category ‘Favourites.’ I meant your favourites for the specific design you are selecting for. When you heart something, I assume you add it to a permanent list of favourites that you can easily access all the time. This is great for your go-to fonts. Pinning, at least for me, makes sense for when you are sampling multiple fonts for the specific project you are working on and you want to compare them or save them to decide after some time browsing. Makes a lot of sense to me.
      Regarding colour-No, it is not amateur to add just flat colour. Nor does the desire to see a visual sample mean one has little experience. An artist is not equal to a designer, and it seems you are more an artist than a designer. There are some very fundamental rules that you seem to miss completely.
      I do wish Fontbase provided some instruction on how to get the most out of their software. I agree that the glyphs are confusing.

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drawitout Im so surprised to hear you say that! I don't really have any art that I have painted or drawn online its very rare that I do, I'm a graphic designer, I went to school for 4 years and obtained a degree, I draw and do Photo composites as a hobby but I am a Professional Graphic designer, This program was missing a lot of key things that I would need as a designer which I pointed out. You cannot select the glyphs or adjust them, some of the fonts I purchase have double ligatures and many glyphs as well as swashes and if I cannot select them and modify the glyphs to the fonts it's accompanied with it is useless. Seeing a font in a program over a different background color or to change its color doesn't really do much for me as a designer what I meant is it wasn't enough. This program is great for a beginner but it really is missing what I needed, I thought I would never find a font manager other than fontbase when i made this tutorial, back in the day adobe used to have one but they discontinued it years ago, after that There weren't a whole lot of options for font managers for pc, but i kept searching, and finally I did find a font manager that met all of my needs as a designer and I did a full honest review on it. Ultimately what I was looking for was a font manger that worked within the creative cloud instead of looking at my fonts on random colors in buggy font base. You dont want 10,000 fonts on your desktop either it slows down the program and storing them on an exsternal drive or the cloud is more beneficial because you are only activating the fonts you need when you need them.

      @@PhotohackLovers then that's a limitation of this program. "Maintype" allows you to keep your font files on your desktop and only have certain ones "active" (installed).
      Furthermore you can tag the system default fonts eliminating the step of having to download them.
      Though if you want 10,000 fonts you'll have to buy Maintype as IIRC the free version limits it to 2000

    Sorry -- the sound quality of this video is so bad that I had to stop before the end of the first minute.

      Its definitely not the sound from the video because I used a 400 mic and use premiere for professional sound editing I would check your speakers bruh. Also it might be a browser issue. No one else complained about the sound and I test audio and sound on several different devices before uploading. 😘

      @@PhotohackLovers Your audio quality is totally fine. : ) I saw you made some comments a year ago about switching to Extensis... What are you using now and/or what do you recommend. I'd prefer a freebie for now (I only have about 3500 fonts) but I don't mind paying for software if it makes things faster for me. Thanks!
