Hey Leon, thank you for the useful video but I cant make a new set or collection in my fontbook, it does nothing and I do not see a + symbol at all... I'm on a 2019 macbook pro Ventura 13.1
Any idea how to stop disabled fonts from displaying in FontBook? For example, I see Baoli SC as a disabled font (greyed out) in your poster image for this vid. How can you stop disabled fonts from being displayed at all?
I really want to know the answer to this question and can't seem to find a way. I'm looking to find a different font manager that has this feature, anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you. It is so useful and you explained things really well. My question is if I can use the smart collection function to automatically pull fonts together (Asian languages) that have long “buried” in hundreds fonts I downloaded. I barely organized them for years, they are accumulating now. The Asian languages fonts mixed with English. I hope to find a workaround instead of checking every font’s preview to separate them. THANK YOU!
Yes you can! When you create a smart collection you can add a language conditional to auto sort based on specific languages the font supports. If you want to filter multiple languages, you just have to add multiple language conditionals. But when you make that, make sure that the top most row which says "ALL of the following are true", is switch from ALL to ANY for the best accuracy. You can see me doing this @ 8:11, although with just one conditional :)
Once you have built a collection of fonts how do you quickly and easily from within your design software access that collection? Say I create a collection called Western fonts and I am designing and want to see all my options of western looking fonts. How would I cull out only the fonts in that collection to view from at that moment?
Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to do that. The next best thing is to organize and browse through Font Book and then manually search for the font you want to use. I wish there was "drag and drop" support within apps so you could just drag a font in to "activate it".
Affinity software will recognize your collections--I was really excited when I discovered that in the font menu...I don't recall if I was in Publisher or Designer.
This was great but do the different Libraries get displayed inside Adobe products? Example: I have downloaded google fonts and I would put them all inside a library... then I go into InDesign and I would only want to work with those google fonts is there a way to only see that library inside InDesign?
One super simple thing Apple doesn't seem to get or care to make clear: Can I see a collection displayed in the dropdown menu of the application I use them in? For instance, if I create a collection for Client A, and I open a file for that client in Adobe Illustrator - can I view that collection - AS a collection in Illustrator? Or will those fonts be ONLY in that long scrolling alphabetically ordered list of fonts? That's not very helpful! Many thanks for the great video.
I used FontSelf to create my own font which costs $40, but it also does require you to have Illustrator because it's a plugin. For a free font maker I would recommend you check out FontForge. Its UI has a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it it's very powerful.
Hi! I've got a question I'd like to make you, maybe you can have the answer I'm looking! I need to rename a family font because it would appear buggy in font book; redownloading the font won't solve the problem. Do you know how can I do that? I can't find a rename option in Font book. Thanks in advance!
@Leon Benkovic --Awesome, have never created any collections in Font Book. Also pretty much, have never gotten RID of any Font... (I've ALWAYS been a Font Hoarder, I ♥️Typography!) Not sure if you know, or if you're on here to answer, but WHERE are our "USER" Fonts stored, the fonts WE'VE added? Trying to back them up & for some reason I can't find them? Yes, I have looked in: Mac HD > Users > my.macbookpro > Library > Fonts to no avail, those Fonts seem to ONLY be 'Computer' Fonts, not the added USER Fonts? Also in the entire time I've used a MAC... a looooooong time, I've never heard anyone call it a "PC"! Yes, I comprehend PC = Personal Computer but that was ALWAYS, only used to refer to Windows... so I am going to guess you came from the Dark Windows PC side?! Well any help/suggestion in finding that Font Folder would be appreciated. TY!
Ahh tell me about it! I always say to myself "I will delete this after the project" and I never do. There's just something I like about keeping every single font I ever used :) Fonts that are installed in the User library are located in (usename)~/Library/Fonts/, but sometimes it doesn't follow that logic and it installs into the Computer library, which is located in /System/Library/Fonts/. If you can't find a font in your User folder, chances are that it's installed in the system folder. The quickest way to check that is to right click a font in Font Book and click "Show in Finder". That will open up the exact location where the font is installed. You guessed right! I indeed do come from the Darkside haha And yes, when I say "PC" I refer to "personal computer", but not necessarily a computer running Windows :)
@@LeonBenkovic To be honest, while doing this entire backup to WIPE my Mac clean & reload ALL (to start fresh), I've now deleted some fonts. Ones not used because when tried I realized they were just not great... so trash. Yes, as I mentioned that's exactly where I looked. And my Computer Library, >System>Library>Fonts/ has relatively few... 🤔I KNOW they're somewhere, I use them?? TY I will do the right click (or on a MBP, sans 🐭, a 2 Finger click. 🙂) in Font Book to 'Show in Finder' (forgot all about that, TY!!) The only other thing I can think of for not finding them, is if the file name is slightly different, e.g. shortened or abbreviated perhaps?? And I dreaded the task of viewing one by one... having tons of fonts. 🤭😬 Ah, yep the "PC" lingo was a DEAD Giveaway... never heard that from an original Mac user (dare I say a mac-snob, like myself 🥴who's never used anything other than a Mac 😉😇😝). TY for taking time to respond, so appreciate the help!
@@TheJoker-zt4nk M'm glad i could help :D hmm, as far as I know, font names stay the same as the file name. They might get reformatted sometimes, but it's usually {font name}-{weight}.ttf (eg: Exo2-Regular.ttf). That's very weird that you can't find them. Mac OS is seeing them so they're somewhere! lol
Is there a way to add search words to a font? Some fonts, such as "Raleway", have names with no correlation to what they look like. I want to add search words to help me find an attribute I might associate with that font.
Sorry I never found a way to "tag" fonts in Font Book. The closest thing to what you're looking for would be making collections as tags/attributes and putting fonts into them...
@@LeonBenkovic I think making collections will be helpful, particularly when I can have the same font in multiple collects....thanks for the reply and the video, it was very helpful.
Leon Benkovic thank you but I think the problem is if the font you’ve added is from OS default system font.... you can’t remove it - something we should let Apple know about.

Very helpful…BUT how can I access a font collection within a program like Pages, or Photoshop … or Elements…or the list goes on? Thank you
Thanks for the very clear and sometimes amusing tutorial. Thanks.
But how do i add fonts to different applications from font book? For example Preview photo?
nice tutorial. Can you create one with the most current OS. Thanks!
This was so clear, thank you!

How do you delete a font you've added in your collection? Is it even possible? Struggling here.
drmelvin25 you select the font you want to delete and then you hit the delete key.

Que dicee amigo? Un autentico crack.
OK. I don't even know what is Font x)
In a nutshell, a set of letters on your computer :)
