Kiyo so wants to be just like his daddy. He imatates every move. The stare is so intence just learning all the right moves. He will be a great silverback one day. Should be an awesome dad if he can imulate Shabanis behavior. This film is priceless showing a great silverback s caring and gentle nature towards his children. Shabanis you are an exquisite gorilla. I stand in awe of you and your kind. Their facial expressions are just like humans and they say it all. Lol for this family. Thank you for sharing.
Shabani and his big brother Haoko both interact with their kids the same, playful and caring way. I don't know who their father is (I'm still trying to find out) but apparently he was a good role model and passed it down to his sons. I enjoy watching Shabani with his kids.
Shabani is the perfect role model To learn from Kiyo is pretty smart to stare at him as much as he does And take as much in as he can

Kiyo is such an interesting mixture of Shabani and Nene's face. Hard to tell where one parent's features ends and the other parents begins.

People should watch the winston troop at San Diego zoo which is having issues with a juvenile silverback Frank. Winston is old, frail but the difference is Frank is not his son. I could never see Kiyomasa disrespecting his father like that but Shabani is his father and that is the difference.

Well , I believe it’s unfair to judge any silverback born and raised in captivity with the ones born in the wild. . Even the females behave differently from the females born in the wild.

I just realized their ears are the same size. Looks like it doesn't grow much from birth since ears look a lot bigger on younger gorillas.... wait Kiyo's ears are bigger than Shabani's xD

Their so bored, I can only imagine how they must feel being captive in an enclosed prison. The dad probably feels his true place is being wasted. They need more realistic home like as if in real jungle, more acreage and trees with less windows present in a circular environment. They look depressed and lifeless without a purpose.
Thank God most zoos have adopted bigger realistic areas for them at least in US and Australia

You are reading too much into it. Shabani and his family have it very nice compared to pretty much every other gorilla family, wild or not. I mean they have what... two large gyms with tons of climbing stuff... a large tower? A few acres to wander around in, and they also have each other.
It's a shame that people in the comments are so human-centric when it comes to their observations. It does not matter if Nene is old, she is still a beautiful gorilla and she still goes in estrus. Imagine if you had a bunch of strangers calling you gross because you are in your 40s and desire sex. Not so nice, is it?

Nene is Kiyomasa's mother.
In the wild, dad ape would be able to firmly tell son time to move on and start your own family. Parents in the wild seem to have a strong motivation to do this when their young are grown. And after a bit of sadness, young ape would move on, find a mate and start his own family. That also seems to be an instinct. Enclosed as they are, these natural instincts are totally frustrated. Kiyomasa craves contact and can only get it from his dad who is weary of him. Perhaps this zoo can put Kiyo in a new environment with a female ape or two and allow for normal life processes to occur.
Kiyomasa is still a child at 9 years old. The longer he stays with his family, the better mate and parent he will be when he matures. He gets plenty of contact from his mother Nene, who even at her advanced age still allows him to ride on her back - long after she should be discouraging that, and with his playmate Annie, his half-sister. When he reaches maturity, in a few more years, he will be moved to another troop somewhere in the world that needs a silverback. And where did you ever get the idea that Shabani is "weary of him"? They still play tag!
