That's my mantra when it comes to making music. remove friction. for me that means having all the gear wired up and ready to go. so when inspiration strikes, flip the switch, all the little lights start blinking, and the rest of the world just disapears.
Yeah that’s my dream as well, especially since I don’t have a lot of free time to work on music right now. My biggest problem is no proper space to set everything up. Maybe soon.
YES! for me removing friction means NO COMPUTER. Everytime I sit in front of ANY computer it wants updates and a reboot. IT crashes. The audio suddenly develops a driver issue. The damn thing pisses me off. SO.. DAWLESS is my solution. I only use the computer for updating the gear and... watching awesome videos about making music.
I have a bank of those very pegboards on my wall. After years of keeping leads and connectors in tubs, everything is now neatly arranged and always to hand. They’re a low cost and flexible solution.
This looks like an ideal solution to consolidate my growing, unruly "micro-modular" synth collection. Thanks! Luckily I live just a couple of miles from an IKEA, guess I'll be paying them a visit.
Dude, that is awesome! I love little hacks to cobble together stuff for a creative endeavor 😀 I also love how concise the video is, and, the tune is pretty darn catchy. Well done.
I have mounted my extra volcas, both momotrons, nts1 and a couple of tiny effect pedals to the wall above my desk. I use those 3M velcro things. I like to think of it as a modular system of sorts.
FUN FACTS: _"SKÅDIS"_ is short for _"skådespelare"_ , the Swedish word for actor. But maybe IKEA also got the name from from the old Swedish word "skåda" which means behold.
Nice idea, to have them on the wall. I have a similar setup, but I use the Beatstep Pro, instead of the Launchpad, which is amazing (although I miss polyphony)
I still have a Kurzweil K2000 that sits in the middle of my room. They were absolute space age magic when the came out, but I hate to say it's mostly used as a temporary shelf now. I don't even use it as a controller keyboard despite the great keybed because I would have to go through my audio interface instead of USB, pretty lazy, lol!
After years of using all of these new tiny synths like Korg Volcas etc. I am starting to miss my full size synthesizers. I need to dig them out of the closet and start using them again too.
@@matrixmirage2699 Actually since I posted that I've been sketching out little things on the k2000 using its sequencer. Good sequencer, but accessed through the dimming LED (could be my eyesight, lol). It's fun, although no real productions have resulted so far, I've got some ideas I might not have gotten in my DAW, and the keys feel great!
@@davetbassbos have you hooked it up to your smaller synths through regular midi yet? When it was just me and my synth I used USB, but once I got a few and wanted to record with a proper mic and a guitar-in as well, I realised it was easier for me to use the midi ports on my audio interface instead of the usb. And now all my small synths can be played with a full size great feeling keybed!
@@kaitlyn__L I have tried the MIDI ports on my interface for both my e-drums and the Kurzweil to control VSTs, I should do it more because the 61 keys lets you work out parts easier than my 25 key mini-korg, cheers!
I recommend everyone to have some kind of dawless rig. You have to fight with hardware sometimes, but that is what can send you off in new creative directions and you end up with sounds and tracks you would never have created if everything had just worked as you wanted it.
The song you made for this video reminds me of Dream Koala. I replayed that section like 5 times once I heard the vocals. Even a couple years later that song still hits new viewers, bruh make it a full song a release it please.
I have the Electribe ER1 and I really like it but I don't have any other gear to input the clock and I haven't been able to get it to sync from Protools with my Digi003, so everything I record with it it's on bpm.decimals...
Unnecessary note of the day: the Electribe ER1 is a digital virtual analog :-) . A really versatile drum machine, indeed: “808/909-ish” but different enough to be refreshing.
David, have you checked the Shaman firmware for ER? I didn't buy it yet, and maybe its not useful for you having so many other tools. But there are improvements like the ability to change the onboard samples :D
David I love that you just mounted this gear on the wall! Great idea. Check out some of my videos for my similar setup. I put all of my gear in guitar pedalboards or other cases so I can compose anywhere I go. I even found a great usb battery that I can run everything on.
Laughing while staring at my 2008 MBP that got a new battery, new power supply, new SSD Still has broken CD player, blown up speakers, outdated OS, slow CPU and only 4 GB ram.
Never watched this guy before. 4:02 "I guess I'll add some vocals?" A VIBE BRO
so good
This needs to be completed as its own song!

« I guess I’ll add some vocals. »
Understatement of the century
"you probably wonder about that thing on the back"
Me - "hell yes! My life totally needs a mini banjo right now"
I wasn't expecting the 10/10 falsetto haha. It's like a modern modular synth. Dope
Didn't know you sang, what a pleasant surprise!
I didn't expect his voice to sound like that I expected to sound like it does when he talks.
He sounds good I like his voice.

Those vocals are so good! Great video!
I love that you have it on the wall, also a great piece of usable art
Thanks for explaining your setup, I like the idea of „always having it at hand“ with only a little footprint.
The song is brilliant! 👍👍
Always a great pleasure to watch your footage
Very awesome, both aurally and aesthetically.
Having it in sight is a great motivation to just turn it on and fiddle.
Love your voice!
Great presentation David and a great reminder in relation to gear I should... but probably won’t use again. Your voice is superb 🙏🦄🎩🎶

Came for the Skådis,
stayed for the Doorless music!
Very cool electronic track, David.
That’s a clever way to have your gear at the ready.
Those vocals🔥🌇
Forgot when or why I subscribed to your channel but I thank god I did.
that er1 compliments the volca pretty well never could find a place for it though good intro box to learn on
What a great studio you have! Great idea how to place everything. Thanks! From Russia with love!
I'm gonna look into that updated firmware for the Launchpad Pro....!!! Thanks.
Very cool. Thanks for the overview.
Shoutout to the Pocket Operator! Ive got a Tonic and Rhythm, some of the best creative tool you will ever come by

I love the little demo at the end... your voice is amazing!
Very cool. I need to make something similar
This is a pretty neat idea, I don't currently have space because of working from home, but I do have a wall :)

Same with my Emu ESI-32.
It's a sad state of affairs.

Was just going to ask and saw this!
Beautiful !
Welcome to the ER-1 Crew ;)
so good!
never heard you sing before, but damn those vocals
That was AWESOME!
I have the same shirt!!
Always interesting....
well, this is the video that finally got me into making a whole dawless setup. . .
just one more gear until im done with it
why did you do this
Yess thank you man!

make a full version of that song at 4:02
please?
DAWLESS KINGS UNITE!
nice! If MacGyver was into synths, he’d have this setup.

Very inspiring content!! Is it possible to hack or is there a firmware available to turn the novation launchpad mini 1 into a sequencer?
this guy 100% loves KID A lol
Hello David, where can I find your song from this video?
Thanks so much for asking. Unfortunately, I never released it. I will try to finish it soon. :)

Amazing song in the end. is it available online? In the meantime, +1 subscriber for you :)
But does it have a Kontakt Library :p
Fun.
Nice channel :) Subed
Nice! I really like the song you made. Did you improvise it?
Thanks! I improvised the backing, and then I spent an about an hour writing the melody that I ended up with at the very end.
@@DavidHilowitzMusic So there isn't a full version ? :'(
in Sweden: we pronounce it "E kee a"
So... 🙄
I guess I have a new crush now... 😅
hehehe! Funny tittle.
Good ! video
Please video keypad only
My ears work better with you.
