I went to a few UKAA (Autoharp Association!) days in my youth and learned to get a feel for one but never invested in buying an autoharp due to the price. I have not tried the electronic ones and they look like junk as you don't have strings, just the touchpad. Needs about 2 inch long fake strings attached to pressure sensors that you can strum and pluck. The vid maker should have shown the instrument being played properly, held to the body like an autoharp.

    I have an issue with the term "you can't" in the "you can't play chords with them" part.
    You can, just like an harp player, you have to develop a technique of shaping the hand so you can skip the appropriate strings to hit the specific notes of the chord, somehow difficult for a beginner but certainly not impossible nor even improbable, specially if you enjoy the harp.

    This inspired me: for anyone with a hydrasynth with the ribbon slider, if you turn on a fast arp with a four octave range, you can then use the ribbon to control the level of the amp so that it’s set to zero unless you press the ribbon. Play chords with one hand and the ribbon can act as the strumming mechanism. Sort of a hydrachord if you will.

  • @EamonCoughlan

    I know there was that 'for practical reasons' caveat, but I thought it worth mentioning anyway that there are dozens of folk instruments still used to this day that fall into the 'box zither' family and fill up that huge 2000 year space between the cithra and the mass-produced 1800s zithers. Some like the langeleik, hummel, etc. which are probably ancestors of the Appalachian dulcimer and closer to the 'concert zither' you show here, and the kantele/kannel and similar instruments that are almost identical to the 'chord zither' (but are frequently used for melody playing). The 'weird' keyboard zithers also have a lot in common with old folk instruments like the nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy when you get down to how the instrument actually functions.
    Cool little history lesson anyway, and looks like a fun instrument :)

    Hooray for pointing out the autoharp. I’ve played it professionally for 25 years. There is so much more you can do with it then just a simple strum too.
    I called my style rhythm and folk because it is very rhythm-based. Or as one person said I had a thumb lead.
    And there are some autoHarpers, who can play melodies, absolutely brilliantly.
    But personally, I prefer my style of Sci Fi drinking songs.

    Before this one they had a very small one with less capability. A good friend of mine who did some importing got the first one sent to the U.S. He liked playing with it but wasn't interested in importing. Not too long later I saw the model in the video at a booth in a county fair and bought a couple. One for me (I still have it) and sent the other to my friend. There are lots of ways to use the strum pad. You can strum, of course, and you will notice the notes in the chord don't continually ascend in a straight arpeggio but alternate around a little making it sound more interesting. Or you can tap to get just one note. Or tap with multiple fingers to get more than one note meaning it is "polyphonic" in its electronic design. Later, I bought the much more advanced Q-Chord which is similar but with vastly more capability including modules you can plug in that play the music for you. The Q-Chord even has sort of a "whammy bar", except it is a "whammy knob". It even has an overlay and mode where it presents itself as a sort of keyboard. One nice thing about these is that, similar to the old school autoharp, no matter what you do, it sounds good.

      I tried Ableton, but it just wasnt for me (also not supported on Linux). So far the closest I've got to a perfect DAW is Renoise, but even that has a few issues, mostly in the fact that its sample based where I prefer synthesis, and getting live recording out of it is a bit of a hack job.
      I want to try bitwig next, I'm hoping thats more up my alley. Also want to learn VCV rack more and possibly get into live coding (foxdot seems nice, and I already know python so it shouldnt be too hard to pickup), but its still mostly Renoise for me at the moment, as well as bits of hardware.

  • @h.wagner
    @h.wagner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thanks for this good introduction. I learned some stuff from it. But, I must point out a couple of errors in fact that you included in your presentation. (1) The popularity of the autoharp in country music was not due to Dolly Parton, but rather was due to the introduction and use of the instrument by the Carter Family (who many would say STARTED country music), nearly half a century before Dolly appeared on the scene. (2) The sound of an autoharp, when properly played does not include the sound of dead strings. Only if played by someone who drags a pick across it like it was a chorded washboard. Here's a challenge. Go to my channel and find any of the tracks I have posted of the autoharp, and let me know where you hear dead string noise (there are a few places in a few pieces, but lets see if you find them).

    Actually, to a certain degree, Arturia's Keystep 37 offers comparable capabilities with its _Strum_ feature! With the limitation though that you select the chord type (Major, minor etc.) by scrolling through a list instead of having them laid out in front of you accordeon-style (I don't think it is possible to change the Keystep's chord type via MIDI CC; if it were possible, you could select the chord type on an external drumpad or so and then play a note on the Keystep to trigger the strum). As you can select the number of notes which should be played / strummed (2-16), the chords do also spread over multiple octaves (basically, when selecting more notes than would be present in one octave, it will repeat the chord an octave higher, then 2 higher etc, with a maximum span of 4 octaves).

They were mini electric organs, combined with sound effects, like "DJ's" were using. Scratch-pads, drum synthesizers, echo, reverse keys, that played notes as if one were playing recored sounds backwards. Mini-keyboards, that mimicked every sort of instrument. Most had prerecorded rhythm sounds, or riffs that could by played along with. I still have them,....and once in awhile for giggles, I play them. I am amused for hours at a time.
