It is always a joy to see steam locomotives operating in the Midwestern US states territory, the Soo Line rr had an interesting variety of steam power. The engine 1003 provided many enjoyable runby scenes and it's great that this locomotive still exists for occasional operations.
It's really a great idea to use an oil tank car (as an outline of a water tank car) to blend in with the rest of the freight rolling stock to supply more water capacity to the Soo Line 2-8-2 Mikado #1003. I hope other U.S. tourist railroads have that similar idea when pulling revenue freight trains.
SOO 1003 is one of the best sounding of today's restored steam locomotives - unfortunately and predictably spoiled by the incessantly shreiking whistle. Yes the whistle is an integral part of steam lore. Maybe use it a bit more judiciously.
Locations as best as I can tell. Time stamps included. August 11: Opening shot (out of order) is Spring Grove, IL (following service stop.) 0:42 Janesville (Rock River bridge, south side) 1:11 LaPrairie 1:42 Fairfield 1:55 Walworth 2:31 Richmond, IL 3:05 Spring Grove (before service stop) 3:40 Fox Lake. The 1003 was accelerating to follow a Metra train into Chicago. August 12 4:55 - 7:15 Galewood Station in Chicago. The engine left after 5pm to head back to Western Ave yard. Just past this crossing, the 1003 was joined by GP38-2 3895 leading for the rest of the trip. Hope this helps out those interested in following the route.
stepvan Joe Actually, It's more like a multi-purpose support train. The hoppers were there primarily for braking. The tank car served as a water car. The three vintage cars serve as crew cars.
Oh well she got some flu problems. As a result with her boiler certificate they need to raise money and plus she's delayed the first excursion until November 2014.
@@DynamoProductions-trains Ahh Haa, I have wondered how the camera man could always get to the next site before the train did. LOLOLOL Why are the cars the same. (I can understand the caboose and maint car but why the Box and tank.? Are they parts tools and water.? Great videos, I just am always curious and observant.
It was a special thing for enthusiasts as I am sure you have gathered. No freight engine would be that clean in regular service, nor would the freight cars. They would have graffiti, the engine would be sooty black and everything would have modern wheels/trucks and roller bearings. The last regular mainline steam freight in America was in 1968 when the Denver & Rio Grande made its last pipe and bulk freight runs in Colorado.

Excellent Videography * the Train was its OWN narrator - 14 min. of Steam Whistle SCREAMING in my ears, and i didn't even notice * 🚂 Outstanding ! 👏
Glad you enjoyed
I like 1003's whistle!
Stood next to 1003 when she came to Whitewater. It's a very beautiful loco
Agreed

Great engine, we saw it again this past year on a photo special.
I Love that Awesome Steam Train!!!!! :-D
So do we
Nice coverage.
Thanks
I cant believe they didn't have any diesel power on it! its like it was a photo shoot!
Wisconsin & Southern is very accommodating.
I wish I could've been there. I may live in Louisiana, but if I'd have heard 1003 would be going to Chicago, I would have been there.
Awesome video! Like a lot of the railfans in Fox Lake, I was just out of frame @ 3:40
Glad you enjoyed
And to think it's gonna happen again in a few days
Ten-O-Three!
LOL @ the teen girl holding her ears and running away from the steam
sounds like 261's whistle
Nice video, subscribed
Thanks
Oh cmon I just left Chicago!!!!
PVMWildcatMJ12190 lol

That whistle is the best part.
That, sir, is a matter of opinion. Please reread my comment, taking note of the word "judiciously."
Remember, opinions are like noses, everyone has one. I was just stating mine. I just want to know who made that whistle....
Great video. Do you remember the exact locations for each scene? what are they?

Thank you so much. With rail videos, I like knowing where I am. Great job again, and thank you.
Nice to see that steam locomotive operating! One question: why does she just pull freight trains?
Because it makes public appearances and photo specials rather than public excursions.
I would like to see her pull a passenger train too.
Well that’s insurance that isn’t needed. The 1003 brings as many crowds just deadheading to locations for events.
Revenue freight?

I wonder if 1003 can visit Metra again in the future?
They just did that again in August
@@DynamoProductions-trains Any steam engines can be allowed to run on Metra in the future with PTC or is it not happening again like it did?
Speed exemption, they just have to keep under 30 mph
Does this engine always pull freight cars?
The 1003 makes special appearances, rarely on public excursions anymore.
It pulled it once in 2002
Why does 1003 not run excursions?
Too much for insurance. It’s cheaper to run for public appearances.
@@sebastianfloyd372 Because Wisconsin & Southern sponsors them.
So 1003 works on the wisconsin auto museum. If I'm correct.
It’s stored there when it’s not running.
Oh well she got some flu problems. As a result with her boiler certificate they need to raise money and plus she's delayed the first excursion until November 2014.
That was years ago. They had it running without issues this past year. We even filmed it on a photo special.
Rather than have a light engine move have it do something while it's at it.
Indeed, it looked like a true freight train.
Soo Line 2-8-2 Mikado 1003 pulls the freight trains.
are you ever going to stop stating the obvious
I know it's late but thank you for saying it
I love those 3 "magical" hopper cars that come and go, appear and disappear. LOLOL
Video was shot over multiple days.

Tank car for water, boxcar for tools, hoppers for braking, cabooses for the crew.

Fame Town USA!
What does that mean?
Hahaha 10:51 see those ducks scramble!
Good old coal burner very awesome! That is the way steamers are suppose to be not oil burners there is a difference and power and function and smell.
I do not know what trek means.
It’s another word for “journey” or “travel.”
Why the heck are they Stil using steam trains
If you have to ask that question I'm afraid you're completely missing the point.
So morons like you could see how great this country is!
