The 2021 BMW M3 Competition has proven itself to be not just a hit on the road, but one of the fastest four-door saloons around a track. Having seen off the brilliant Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio in a previous track test, it's now the turn of two of the quickest hot hatches ever produced to try and cause an upset. So can the Honda Civic Type-R's weight advantage, or the Mercedes-AMG A45's four-wheel drive system help it overcome the M3's epic straight six engine around the tight, twisty circuit at Llandow? Steve Sutcliffe puts all three on the limit - and beyond - to find out.

The things that let you know Steve is a proper wheelsmith is he doesn't do fake laughter at every opportunity and also goes quiet at moments where serious concentration is required, owing to being on the ragged edge of the car's performance. So refreshing to watch. More of the same please

Todays motoring shows have focused more on the money than ever before. My theory is that the cash and exposure brought in by the recent/current generation of 'casual enthusiasts' outweighs that brought in by the purists.

Those civics are crazy impressive at the track but I still rather have the confidence of awd especially with torque vectoring

I’m impressed by the Civic given its price compared to these other two Germans. Combine that with a manual and I’d be happy to be handed the keys on any given road or day.
What do you mean "given it's price" , it's the worst value for money here compared to the quality you get.
@@derbigpr500 I mean it’s £20k less than the A45 and less than half the price of the M3, while being relatively close in performance and having the additional fun factor of a manual transmission. If you think some fit and finish plus a 0.5-1.5 second advantage is worth £20-50k we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I love Steve Sutcliffe he’s excellent at reviewing cars. Didn’t see him for a while and in the few vids he did he didn’t seem well. Glad to see him back to his old self and great videos.

Nice to see Steve back behind the wheel again, also significantly lighter himself too.
I think what this shows you is just how finally balanced a lot of these new hot hatches are. The I30N, Megane RS and Type R to name a few. And that’s before you go and start modifying them for some extra fun! It’s not a bad time to be a car enthusiast, that’s for sure.

If the comparison is already good, Steve just elevates even further making you thing about the real potential on The New M3 competition, because those two are the best in their class. That's pretty astonishing for a car with that kerb weight, the electronics do magic things in nowadays.

The Civic is One fine machine. Given the much less bhp and fwd shows that the chassis is a absolute masterpiece. A clear winner for me regarding price, performance, usability and reliability.
the cheaper car will always be better value but that doesn't mean that the others aren't worth it
The lack of absolute bhp is part and parcel of it's masterpiece chassis. It probably wouldn't go that much faster with more horsepower
@@Sfisoul right, the fwd cant realy handle more power (on small Tracks/Traffic) but it doesnt realy need to either. The japanese are just clever and the Honda is just impressive on its own being able to race and perform against two completly different systems, powers and pricetags that would seem to give ALOT of advantage. But in the end it doesnt, shows the true work that whent in the Honda.
That is totally relative. If you also care about how a car looks, the Civic is incredible ugly. Therefore if you ask me, it is too expensive for sure.
I was not arguing on design and on who spends their money on what and how mutch. That is optional. But sure, if it makes you happy above all things in life spending 35k euro + for looks its your choice.

I just wish you would mention what tires each car came equipped with, it can make a huge difference as you well know.

Interesting comparison, certainly shows the immense capabilities of all of the cars. Would be interested to see how the FK8 Limited Edition compares to the A45s and the new Golf R.
Good video!! but..how is comparing a 40k vehicle to a 70k vehicle fair? I mean i love the video, but i sure hope 30k difference would get you better performance! I think the fact that we are comparing the type r to a vehicle totally out of its league (in price) just shows how much of a great car for the price the Type R is.

Except that I would take it on! You need bigger balls to drive that M3 to the limit than in a hot hatch and your average Johnny Liftoff won’t know where the hot hatch had gone through the twisties.

Costs less than half of an M3, has a manual, cheap to maintain, and has bullet proof reliability. Type R all the way.
All 3 cars are seriously impressive to be honest. But for me, the humble Civic is the best. It's way more affordable and almost surely way, way more reliable and cheaper to maintain. And most importantly, it's a manual!

Love watching some Sutcliffe behind the wheel of these rabid machines! Civic was outgunned from the get go, so they should've tried to get the Type-R Limited Edition instead....might get real close to that 44.9s. Still 45.6s is the quickest fwd around there. New M3 Comp is bonkers quick though. Close to 600hp definitely makes a difference

Interesting comparison and well presented by this guy! Personally I don't think this track suits the Type R at all as even though there's not much understeer it is still there and it's evident on slow corners. Think this would be closer on a faster track. Of course the M3 would still win fairly comfortably as it's a beast, but I think the Type R would take the 2nd spot.
I just wish the bmw drivers could actually push it fast or have the confidence to do so. I also wonder if you accidentally put it in drift mode since the new cars drift mode works same as the old launch mode but for me it’s all about how I come into and out of a turn that determines how tail happy it gets
When the best looking car in a comparison is an A Class, you know there’s something seriously wrong with today’s designers
seeing the M3 in person it looks way better than they AMG, not even comparable.
@Peter Hammer. I disagree. The new M3 is over styled with shapes just for the sake of having shapes. Look at the hood and by the tailpipes. Over styled begins to look like a clowns car.

The M3 would have done even better, if the track had been as dry as it was for the two others.
All those rapid camera switches reminds me of movies made with shaky cam. It would be much better if you guys just stick to the front view.

I like your videos, but I have to say it again - don't render a 21:9 video in 16:9 because on 21:9 monitor it only fills 50% of the area on full screen, the rest are black stripes around the video. Render in 21:9 and youtube player will sort everything out on every device it will be played.

TYPE R IS AWESOME. with a 2.0 engine size its not that behind from these 2 german cars. Imagine if Honda put their 3.0 engine in the Type R lol.. it'll be definitely the winner. Type R is more impressive to me.

The Merc has the same capacity engine. And I suspect if they fitted a larger engine in the Civic they'd destroy its balance (and would need to go AWD, which would increase the weight even further). I think it's fine as it is...
@@dlevi67 im just saying...actually if Honda fitted their type r with that same engine on the coming Acura Type S 3.0 which almosy weigh 4k pounds and still fast and strong. That can fit in the type r, they just have to make some adjustments on the body or maybe none at all. Honda engineers always come up with almost impossible things all the time. My point is if Honda really would want to destroy their competitions they could...but they care about affordability so thats what they do.

You were right about the horsepower deficit, but it's more the manual box than the FWD that also slows things up

The Honda Civic Type R GT has an excellent chassis and a great engine. And good one's in a few years will go up in value.
Would like to see it again with Civic running Michelin rubber. I suspect it could be a photo finish.
Last time that BMW M3 went to 39.1 and the Alfa Romeo Julia 44.4 , now we see the BMW going to 43.9 , What's the matter about that ?
It's a shame BMW went backwards with weight. The F30 3 series, they aimed for 1500kg, and pretty much hit it depending on the engine and spec. Now we're up at 1800kg!! Damn! I don't think the old V8 M3 was that heavy except in convertible form.
