One of my favorite scenes from the movie is the dinner table scene. Where Andrew calls out his relatives and cousins who don't understand his passion and skill for drumming, yet they praise his 2 cousins for being barely above average in football.
I AGREE. Takes one to know one and he showed his true colors, that being one with a great mind and a great heart.

In that book, there is a certain male character that’s part of the main cast, who wants to become a great man through gathering big achievements in war. After his first major battle, the guy quickly realizes how wrong that dream of his was for him, and since then starts to focus on his personal life and relationships. But that doesn’t go well either. Tragic character, really.
Tolstoy denies the theory of single great men that change the course of history by their own two hands, and instead offers the opinion that it’s the masses that bring about great change.
Really great book, recommend it (it is long though).

I really hope we are all sane enough here to realise this isn't a motivational movie. You want to be great you want to better yourself go for it. But this movie is a warning about being the best.
That's what most of those self-improvement-addicted idiots don't get.
I don’t think it’s much of a warning but an example of what a person would do in the pursuit of greatness. And when he was embarrassed at the end he chose not to let his passion end there, he took the opportunity to lay it all in the table, all the hard work, the passion, and dedication to drumming. It’s a movie about perseverance, if being great were easy everybody would be great. But it takes sacrifice and hard work. I can see if being great was a bad thing if people were scared of sacrifices and hard work.
@@theesotericist139 I really don't think it's supposed to be an inspirational tale about hard work. He loses his girlfriend for his passion, pushes away his family for his passion, even plays after getting into a fucking car crash (which was arguably caused by his passion due to reckless driving to get there) and still plays. All of that so he can give the performance of his life and then chase that high forever atop a lonely and harsh mountain of "success". If that kind of life sounds fulfilling to you, then sure, I guess it's a motivational story.
According to the director, the protagonist eventually goes on to commit suicide.

True, but is there a line drawn when it comes to what to sacrifice. There’s a difference between sacrificing the amount of time you play games or sacrificing the importance of a loved one.
@Pingu I'd say it's assessment of the things you really want in life then doing them.
There's a reason a lot of the great artists and entrepreneurs, and really any whos at the pinnacle of their field, both in history and contemporary times, were a bit crazy or had very tumultuous personal lives with excess, vices, and unstable relationships. One can only focus on so much, every opportunity has an opportunity cost implicitly.
If you want to be great, its going to cost you. If you want to live a normal life and be a great husband/wife father/mother that's going to cost you greatness, but isn't a less noble path by any sound measure. Just make sure what your doing is what you really want.

The director himself said he wrote this movie as a warning to those who think success comes from isolation. Everyone seeing motivation in this film completely missed the point.
Sleeping and having a life outside of your craft will give your mind rest and make you learn faster. You are wasting your time after 4-5 hours of practice anyways.
This movie was a very thought provoking reflection on the insane focus on individuality and success in American culture in my opinion. The movie isn’t saying you can’t get results through this way of life, but what is the true reality of this way of living beyond the highs of achievement?

He didn't break up with her to be some kind of sigma male. He did it because he believed he had to in order to focus and succeed. He seemed like he really liked her even if things were kind of awkward.

I believe that connecting romance with self realization is hard, but not impossible. If people love each other enough, they will understand their own desires to make each other happy. Also this is important not to be egotistic douche and care about needs of your partner. If you cannot do that, avoid relationships until you are stable. The success tastes sweet, but it tastes even better when you have someone you can share it with
Six months ago I had to do the same thing this guy on the video had. I didn't want to but it was necessary for both of us. She also was borderline and in a matter of a year it corroded our connection as her state got worse progressively. The whole relationship started to become a pain for both of us and it wasn't possible to join her need to be with me toxically increased by her mental illness and my drive for self realisation and we both were going down a spiral of sorrow. I've seen more suicide attempts in front of me than I'ever heard of about other people and some began merely because of a little argument. I hope she is now doing better and following more her therapy. Unfortunately, sometimes it's not healthy to force a connection between romance and self realization.
That's a bold statement you can allow yourself to enjoy your accomplishments by yourself without sharing it with anyone.

Love and "self realization" are one and the same. The mistake is believing they are separate and that it is an either-or choice. If a person is not able to pursue their individual goals in addition to love, that is their failure as a person. Get rid of this idea that self realization is an individual process that requires an isolated "grind."

I mean you didnt understand the point of this scene. He calls her later in the movie after he lost everything and she has a boyfriend, he even still, invites them to the show but they don't come. Because he was conceited. I can see how it is inspirational to give something up but at the end of the day, he realized he was wrong. Until he went back to Fletcher.
The time he went back to Fletcher to beat Fletcher, he had to be a greater evil than Fletcher himself. But unfortunately Fletcher held the stronger card of manipulation where Fletcher manipulated Andrew for the final time on stage infront of huge audience..
Thats my fav scene of Whiplash. Its the final gut-punch and huge “What did you expect?”. He prematurely chased her away and she was still kind enough to not blow up at him when he had the audacity to invite her into his life again.

For those who hasn’t seen the movie, Andrew is not just “pursuing greatness” this movie is a cautionary film to anyone, warning them to not let themselves lose the things they care about in the pursuit of “greatness” EDIT: i’m not saying it’s wrong to pursue your dreams. the problem was that Andrew had a lot of pride, and Fletcher used that pride to manipulate Andrew. greatness is in quotes because he was really pursuing Fletcher’s dreams, not his own.

A beautiful counterexample for this crock of bullshit is current chess world champion MGNUS CARLSEN. He is considered to be the greatest player to touch the game.
It was believed you needed this sorta madness and obsession to succeed in chess, and most of the champions in the last century were a bit mad.
Then came this guy and dismantled this whole idea, and even actively spoke against it, ans encouraged young players to not be obsessed with chess, but enjoy it.
Point is that you need to practice things with emotional intensity to be good at something, and that intensity need not be just misery or obsession.
He started very early.

High levels of intensity of working on a particular passion is only meant to be done for short bursts at a time and cannot be excessively prolonged with out having some sort of negative effect.

Completely missing the point of the whole movie being that his self destructive journey lead by Fletcher to supposed greatness leaves him as a shell of a human unable to enjoy his life because after he's kicked out of the school he has nothing left, no people to help him, no people to empathize and properly support him because he pushed all of them away for no reason.
Thats a deep and painful lesson to learn first hand

Yes and no. That aspect can and does coexist with the idea that if greatness is what you value the most, at the cost of personal relationships, and you want it bad enough, you’re going to achieve it. You’ll have the respect of even those who hate you or demean you or misunderstand you. The story was written to depict ALL the consequences of doing what Andrew did, not just “self-destruction”. Quite honestly, like with bodybuilding/weight training, there’s going to have to be a habitual tearing (or self-destruction) of the muscles before they can be become stronger, greater, etc. Andrew’s obsession was, of course, toxic, but only because he wasn’t conditioned by Fletcher to ever allow for rest, recooperation, or time outside of his passion. Beyond that singular point, Andrew did nothing objectively wrong. He persisted, something his father or the girl will never understand.

The first time I saw this movie I had a friend take me who was intending to be my manager. He said this is the price to greatness. I left feeling sick to my stomach and distanced myself from him, because for me, greatness can only be achieved as an artist authentically. Forcing something doesn’t make you better. I’ve worked hard at my music for 18 years and for me it’s actually about knowing yourself and trying to capture these moments and package them to be shared. But there is also value in working so hard your fingers bleed. Whiplash is the mindset schools sell to kids to become great and successful musicians. I can’t say anything is completely one way or another, because ultimately every effort I made towards what I love is time well spent, even if little progress was made
He's obssessed, not trying to be great. Being great is being able to handle and balance things and pursue your passion.

That's life, if you take the whole "sacrifice" dilemma to the extreme you'll end up fulfilling your dreams yes, but at the cost of everything, including your mental health and soul, not to mention the people who love you (and no, they're not obstacles which stop you from achieving "greatness")

Obsession is the focus on winning in ONE narrow domain, to the detriment of all other aspects of your life.
for me the look his dad gives him in his end preformance his so incredible and haunting. The look of horror for me is him realizing that fletcher in a way “broke” him to become this great musician but also realizing this could lead to an even more troubled life.

After 3 years of relationship we had to break up because it was getting toxic. I had to correct my life for me and my family. I started reading , working out and developing my personality. It took me like 1.5 years to overcome from her feelings. Now i have a job and iam a business owner too,earning enough to take care 6 members of my family.
I broke down 100s times but always restarted again, i had to leave my society,some of my friends, but here iam now secured the life of my family and myself. Keep grinding.
Irony about it is, that people will remember you, usually for all the wrong things. All the things you didn't do, all the things you did do, all the things you should of done.

Anybody in this comment section that believes you NEED to push away love or potential love as some sort of pre cursor to greatness deserves neither love nor greatness.
Love from friends, family, or a partner is not a distraction, threat, or shiny end goal at the end of greatness. It transcends the entire concept altogether. I honestly dont even know where some of you got this idea from? How well-defined is your personal idea of 'greatness'? How robust is it? What is the higher cause or ethical pursuit that your 'greatness' is in aid of?
There's someone in this comment section saying they're ready to end their relationship to pursue 'greatness' in their field of mobile app design. With no sense of irony. Mobile app design. A job is a job, my friend. Do your thing. I do not consider myself above any field of work. But please do not pin the future of your soul on designing mobile apps.
I'll put it out there again like others already have, Whiplash is a cautionary tale. He's supposed to stand in contrast to your perception to allow you to assess his position. To analyse the merits of his thinking. To see things, as a member of audeince, that he cannot. Not to swallow him wholesale as some hero. What about his life is heroic? His isolation? His self-destruction? His inability to accept love? Or are you distracted by his end performance into believing it was all worth it? Do you truly believe the best way to process the pain and injustice in your own life is to lock yourself away in a job or career?
Do you know why the movie ends at that scene and not the next day or 5 years later? Because you would then have to watch his character come to the realisation that there is nothing else in his life. It ends at the top, so you dont see the inevitable descent.
People miss the point of 'greatness' in my opinion. They pick poor role models. Pursuit of excellence within a vocation should be one part of the lifelong pursuit of greatness of character. Tenacity and hard work are virtues. However, so are love, temperance, compassion, and self reflection. Do you know why someone like Kobe Bryant had kids and a wife despite knowing he would be one of the best ever in his sport? Because he had the humility and foresight to know that without a family around him to be a role model for his victory would be hollow. He strove to live a great life, not to simply slavishly devote himself to a narrow conception of greatness.
There are people once in a generation or so whose work, you could argue, is so important that it transcends personal happiness in that persons life. The odds that you are that person are so astronomically low, you are much better off living a more rounded strategy. You are not Jonah Falk, you will not likely cure polio and save the lives of millions for generations to come. Develop a personality and find love, future you will thank you.
Also, I wouldn't recommend subscribing to a channel that tells you this scene is someone rejecting weakness.

I totally understand what his intentions were with the break up. He was trying to prevent the pain in the future as he was because he knows he’s not fully capable of balancing his goal and sharing that with someone else. I also thought this too when I broke up with an ex saying that I want to be the best version of myself and it’s better without her in it but I realized that I can be the best version of myself even with someone by my side to keep me focused and maintain integrity. Of course it’s not for everyone but it’s possible for both sides as long as you know yourself and have a supportive partner.
He was 100% honest & straightforward.

Here's my takeaway. Miles Teller wanted status. Perfecting his abilities brought him closer to achieving that status. He didn't love/enjoy the art. He channelled his inner rage and insecurities and hopelessness through the drums and cymbals. He punished his hands, his body, his partner and his family. He hurt everyone around him. He was selfish and lost a loving father and gf and surrendered himself to a brutal sadist mentor. This movie wasn't inspiration for self flagellation and all consuming obsessions. It was a warning. Who cares who talks about you? When you can spend your life around dinner tables with your loved ones enjoying the little happy moments?
I honestly agree with that. Cause what's the point of going on such a lonely road where you hurt yourself and in the end most likely end up alone too, living in a materialistic world where no one real is in your life and you're not even real to yourself. That's sad really

I agree that the goal of being remembered and having people talk about you is definitely stupid. It ruins the point of going for greatness, which IMO is to push the skill ceiling for the rest of humanity to show everyone what humans are capable of. Instead of a self-centered narcissistic goal, the sacrifice in the pursuit of greatness can be altruistic. It should be to inspire others. That way it becomes a much more interesting problem. Should you hurt those around you to help the rest of humanity even in a small way? Or do you love those around you and live a happy life without helping the rest of humanity. Both have their merits and the person in the audience should choose whatever path fits their life the best. Instead, the way it's presented in the movie makes it seem like Miles was just naive and selfish

i have a friend who did that, ended the relationship to focus on his studies and do his second college and graduate studies. We work at the same company. Today he is in one of the best positions in the company.
Tbh if this video is meant to be advice it's bad advice. She's a great gf in the movie, very supportive and kind. Men should value that in women. Not just drop them because of some perceived advantages. The film makes it clear this is an arrogant bad decision that he comes to regret.

Obviously you never experienced what he talked about, I did and I can tell you yes it goes pretty bad with time and the hate just go through the roof and everyone suffer. He took the decision he thought was best so it was the best decision for him period.

This was cool since I am a drummer myself and have been since the age of 9. I am 33 now, my father got me onto them since he saw me play them once at one of his mates house and we played "keep them separated" by The Offspring. I was just hitting the snare and bass drum and they started to play along with me. I have some cherished memories with my father as he played guitar through my childhood. We made a CD together in a studio when I was just 12yo. I still have that CD. This was motivating. Cheers.

I understand the logic on why he felt he had to break up with her but at no point in the movie did it show she could’ve been a set back to his career. There was absolutely no hint in the movie of her being a road block in any capacity to his dreams. This break up scene isn't motivation, it's self destruction. You don't need to be alone to be great. The man in this scene IS the problem. He is broken. In the story, he is putting in this amount of effort to try and prove to others that he is good enough because nobody around him gave him any sort of validation leaving him feeling isolated. Beginning of the movie when meeting this girl he talks about not having friends and only going to the movies with his dad every week. Dinner table scene where his family cared more about sub par sporting accomplishments than him being lead drummer at the most prestigious music school. He was alone and all he had was drumming and sought all of his value through it. The thing that provided him escape and hope, is the thing that started to tear his relationships apart

I'm practically in the exact same boat right now, more or less, and it's eating away at me. The person I'm friends with is still in my contacts because I genuinely fear what they'll do to themselves if I up and leave. This guy's been through some serious shit, and most conversations get caught up in him telling me about little things that worry me to death simply because I can't help him. I can't be therapist no.1 with the dreamcure. But if I go, who else will take my place? Should anyone take my place?
I recently abandoned (for lack of a better word) two friends I knew through high school. College exists now, they're no longer with me. The friendship and bond degraded and I made so many things terrible unintentionally all the time. They'd crack comments about the things I'd say to try and patch up the mess, and I quickly decided it was my time to go. Keep in mind this was months on top of months of awkwardness, tension and sarcasm between us all, except I was the one who kept quiet which pissed them off all the more. I was making it worse by not doing anything, if that makes sense. After high school, I blocked them on literally everything I could without a word. Just took off without a hint of warning. And then the guy I mentioned at the top of this thing got in touch with me saying about how he was being nagged by them to get info out of me as to why I left so abruptly. If those two seriously don't understand why I left after months of tension with me on the receiving end of endless snarky comments, god help them and their delusion. I both do and don't regret it. You see, I'd often try HARD to fix things I'd do or come out with. And sometimes, it'd work. Sometimes after days of huge paragraphs the explanations would be worth it. I never gave up on trying to make it right. And not once did I intend on hurting any of those two. But eventually I got nothing back from them. I quote 'I'll read that next year' as an official respose I got after another one of my desperate rants. If I would've tried talking about my fuckups in person, I'd get talked down and vented at by a pair of people I no longer knew. When they stopped caring about what I was trying to say, it was over for me. God just thinking back on it, it was like the tension you feel sitting down in a room full of people you don't know. I'll end up sounding like a victim or a narcissistic or something like that I know, but I can't express in any way how much fucking anguish that situation caused me. And so I left, because I was unintentionally hurting two people who'd drifted from me months ago.
Back to the guy I was talking about at the start of this, I've known him since early high school. There was always a problem at play in his life, always an internal struggle I was faced with gradually. I vaguely remember suicide threats. That should be enough to tell you the gravity of what I met when I got to know that guy. It literally never got better and I don't know if it has at all. I mean, I think he's doing a little better, certainly more than in the past, but our last conversation was like most others. Typically with him, I'd have to instigate conversation online. If I didn't, he'd rarely talk to me. This wouldn't be a problem at all for me, if I didn't fear what would happen if I left WITH saying something before I go. The scale of his reaction could be detrimental to his health, and I feel his sanity is partially in my deck to deal with forever. He has his mum still, which reassures me a little. Not dropping any names or anything like that because it's not needed at all. Whenever I think of him, he reminds me of the guilt I hold over leaving the other two mainly because he constantly mentions them. That's but another reason as to why I feel I'm just a support beam for him now. Maybe that's all I've ever been. I agreed with my family to just stop reaching out all the time if he doesn't build bridges like I've tried many times.
So that's where I'm at.
