In competition you aren't playing to the audience, you're playing to judges who do notice the things that the audience doesn't.
It’s so easy to hear mistakes even when you’re not a musician so I think the audience would notice mistakes. Definitely more than .01% lol.

When Andrew improvised and fucked up when fletcher set him up at the end, i guarantee that some of the audience didn’t notice and just thought the drum part was very loose and avant garde.
@@Kingsnax12 It’s easy to predict drum beats and feel where the rhythm is going. I don’t know maybe it’s just easy for me. I play guitar and piano. I dunno I just feel like drum beats are so easy to follow.

4:55 is my favorite part. To me it shows that teachers can’t just have high standards and high demands. There has to be a balance at some point of acknowledging the student’s hard work and growth.
I feel that is the point of the movie though. The reason Fletcher is so demanding is bc he knows when someone has potential, but for him the only way to get to that is by being such a demanding person who does not accept failure or even mediocrity. In a way he is right, just like the talk he has with Andrew, if he pats him on the back or even acknowledges his hard work he is doing him a disservice in making him believe that it’s alright to fail or be mediocre. Not to say he will never fail, he is human everyone can mess up, but if he accepts it he will never improve and become a great musician. Andrew even tries to say wouldn’t that discourage the next Charlie Parker and Fletcher replies no bc the next Charlie Parker will never be discouraged, something Andrew learns when Fletcher embarrasses him in front of an audience

@@gerardorebolloso797 I get that point but I don't think it's the right way. Personal insults and demolishing confidence isn't the only way to keep pushing for better results.
Persistence is the key in my experience. If someone has improved, good job. However that only means that the current trajectory is good, it doesn't mean the level you are currently at should be sufficient for you.
Most musicians put themselves constantly no matter what, you don't need to increase that in most cases.

J K Simmons is a friggin master ... in the "not my tempo" scene you can feel the uneasy tension as his temper crescendos until BOOM a chair goes flying.
This is the most intense on the edge of your seat movie ever one of my favorite movies of all time...
I had a Fletcher. The woman still haunts my dreams.
Honestly, they were perfect for each other. Andrew was cocky but talented, Fletcher was abusive but a perfectionist. They pretty much always met each other halfway. It’s no wonder they each got what they wanted in the end.
Yes you are right 100% they were actually very close to each other in a dysfunctional way, the crazy thing is when Andrew tackled Fletcher and wanted to kill him that was a real breakthrough in their relationship then at the end when Fletcher said he was going to gouge out Andrews eyes it went from that to "Andrew what are you doing man"? to Fletcher uprighting the drum set to guiding him through the drum down and drum up to the smile at the end I imagine they stayed close after this movie obsessing about music fighting with each other then Fletcher dies and Andrew is lost and depressed and withers away.

fletcher seems like the kind of guy that never got the shit beat out of him, as a man going unchecked is a dangerous thing.
I've always wondered whether or not Neiman's tempo actually was wrong or was Fletcher just planning on humiliating him from the beginning.
From what I heard and know, It actually was wrong until the last try, where he finally nailed it, but Fletcher probably thought, that he picked it right too late according to his standarts.

I think he had acknowledged him for a while, atleast for the potential. In the end of the movie when Fletcher embarrasses Andrew is when he stops acknowledging Neuman. "Maybe you didn't have it in you after all" Which unlike most of his insults is said completely calm because he actually means it.
Never forget the "I apologize to all the musicians" line.

So glad i caught this one on theatre, great experience and whether we like it or not, there is a message in this film, immensely accurate (i'm sorry to say..).
In my opinion the line “I swear to fucking god, I will stop being so polite- get the fuck out of my sight before I demolish you” is underrated.
Nobody would take slaps like that. Plus he would be fired.
