    Way to go Ryan, great day. We see that Scissor-tailed Flycatcher all the way down here at the end of its southern range and get just as excited as you do. Being from Texas, it is one of my favorite birds and a real pleasure to see them so far from home.

    I live in Seattle. While visiting Florida, I joined an Audubon Field Trip to the Everglades. As we carpooled to our birding destination I spotted a Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher on the telephone wires. Others in my car poo-pooed the ID. When all the cars got to the destination, someone in a different car mentioned seeing a STFL on the wires. It felt so good to know that I had correctly IDed a bird I'd never seen before with only a brief glimpse. It's such a great bird I wish I could have gotten quality looks at it.

    First off,. I love your vids :) Subscribed and watching them all. Just had to say, these are both VERY cool birds :) Got my first Scissortail Flycatcher about 6 weeks ago while visiting my parents in N. Louisiana. Then, I got my first Ash Throated Flycatcher a few days ago, right here near my home in Sacramento CA. Keep after them, and TY :)

    Great video! Those are some great birds. I"ve heard of scissor-tailed showing up in Saskatchewan. It's interesting they often seem to be vagrants.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some reason they just pop up all over the place. One of the most likely vagrant flycatchers

    Congrats on your rare flycatcher foray! Speaking of western rarities ending up in the Great Lakes area, Muskegon, Michigan is hosting a Lewis’s Woodpecker!! I went and saw it on Monday - the first day it was reported. It’s a first record for the lower peninsula, 4th for the whole state. Watch for a short video of it on Saturday!

    Beautiful long-tailed bird! If you guys are lucky enough to see those in Wisconsin, maybe we will be lucky here in Illinois. We don't get up to the Lake too much anymore though for smelting...we just got old. Many Robins here in our yard this year to enjoy. They are the first ones up in the morning.

    Im 3 years into birding. Prior to getting into the hobby I played a game called wingspan (huge board game nerd here). Theres a scissortailed flycatcher on the cover. I thought to myself, I'll never see a bird like that. I live in eastern Missouri, but when I visited my grandparents in the western edge of Missouri I got to see a couple my first year of birding. Still one of my greatest highlights! Amazing birds.

    • @BadgerlandBirding

    I'd love to see both of those species. The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher looks slightly off-balance to me, but its tail is quite long, so that makes sense.

    I wondered what I had seen in Zeeland MI. I thought someone had let an exotic bird loose. So I found out from this site from googling it is a scissor-tailed flycatcher. I have seen it twice. Last time today.

      From what I’ve read it helps them maneuver in mid-air to catch prey!

    Flycatchers are one of my absolute favorite taxa, but I am bad enough at ID that I have probably missed a vagrant rarity at some point. Empids are so similar and some of those kingbirds aren't much better.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right. It's unfortunate when you see a bird 5 feet away and can't ID it if it doesn't call

    Awesome video! I'm considering getting a panasonic FZ80 for bird videography. Would you recommend it? You have very nice video quality!

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would definitely recommend it! Did a full review which I’m linking below. If you do a lot of video it’s great, picture quality is decent but not immaculate, and zoom capabilities are also great. I set mine up with a tripod normally and also scope with it. Ryan and I have both had some issues with the zoom lately but we only use cameras to bird so the motors get a lot more work from us than they would with someone who also uses binoculars. If you do order one please consider using our Amazon Associates link in the description, then we earn a small percentage from the sale :) hope that helps! th-cam.com/video/H5ShXgmCs7g/w-d-xo.html
