This atmosphere also carried over into the original LEGO Batman sets from 2006-2008 which feel quite darker and more foreboding then the modern Lego Batman sets coming out today
Yeh I was gonna include something about that in the vid but thought it was a but if topic but joker is a lot more crazy here than in the sequel is more funny
The Original first release of the "Lego: Batman" first batch of Lego Sets are to this day my favorite Lego series out of all media to come out for Lego and I pray and hope that one day I will be able to proudly own all of them :)
I remember a theory that the first stage of the game took place in "crime alley". the place where bruce's parents were killed. In addition to the level being an alley, in the middle of the level there is a theater where Bruce's parents went before they died. when you play this same level with the villains, there's a drawing of a body on the ground.
I have always had a weird sense that the gotham portrayed in this game is so abandoned yet so lived in. I always remember looking off to the distance outside of the playable areas and imagining that all the citizens and residents of Gotham City were asleep, the occasional window that was lit up during the night. The sound definitely had a huge role to play and i personally think the Tt games nailed the length of each level. They didn't feel too long but certainly not too short. I recently started playing lego marvel superheroes and damn those levels are so long, just makes you dread having to replay them in free play. One last thing to note, the Gotham portrayed in this game IS Gotham in my opinion. Whenever i think of Gotham i think of how it looked and sounds in this game. The Arkham games also did a very good job but lego batman just wins.
Dude… so I didn’t get to play the console version, I had the DS version (yeah yeah, I know but at least I had more characters). And I would spend ages looking at the background, as low-res as they were (cause DS lol) and they would still nail that dark atmosphere of Gotham… I always wondered if any citizen could see Batman. Where Batman was in Gotham, how big Gotham actually was… that game really did make me a Batman fan.
@@guedem.7197 Yup they did a great job making it feel lived in, and then as you get older you understand how games are actually made and things in the background are just flat textures 😅
@@samlowther9487 oh totally. So I got the game in a veeery legal way (R4 card lmao) and there’s cheats on it I never used em when I was a kid but I decided to play it again recently and there’s an unlimited double jump “cheat” that allows you to fly and go up to the level’s invisible wall limits and there you see how they superposed the flat textures n all. I was amazed at how creepy they made Gotham with a few pixels of flat textures… and the music too. Especially since the DS has this grainy effect to its sound, makes it creepier in its own way too. Combined together it gives you an incredible game
@@guedem.7197 Oh for sure, i wonder if Boundary Break have done a video looking at Lego batman 1. I know they did one for lego star wars so i'd imagine the game/level design would be similar
Tt have always done well with their DC games. Lego Batman serves as a great introduction into Batman, Lego Batman 2 serves as a great introduction to the Justice league heroes, and Lego Batman 3 serves as a great introduction for the greater DC universe.
3:25 This happened to me when I first saw the 1989 Batman film, I was able recognize the whole soundtrack from the game and, because of that, it became my favourite Batman movie
I prefer Lego Batman over the sequels, not just because of nostalgia, It just simply felt more like a Batman game, I like the tone and atmosphere, the look of Gotham, The Batcave, Arkham and other locations, and I like the fact that the villains have their own story modes after beating the main levels.
This game has my favorite version of Gotham out of Any batman game because to me it's the only batman game that's been able to accurately depict Gotham and it's atmosphere, it's just amazing, the high rooftops in the air vehicle levels, the rundown and old buildings in the streets, it's just the perfect Gotham to me, and any nostalgia I have for this game just adds to that. And the music is jus chefs kiss.
old traveler’s tales had such restraint with the presentation in lego games. you can see even in the concept art they throw at you, so much care and attention to detail was put into things that weren’t even identifiable lego, but more closely resembled the arkham games (this came first) they looked gritty, simultaneously lived in and abandoned, like you’re wandering around in an extremely high-detail diorama of gotham. only the parts that were important to the player were actually brick, which also made it easier to tell when something’s interact-able. what a great era for tt
This was 100% my first introduction to Batman as a whole. The same year, ‘The Dark Knight’ came out. My favorite character in LB1 was Two-Face, you can imagine my reaction when watching that film.
The atmosphere is what defined Lego Batman anything in general for awhile, making it feel like an actual genuine separate WORLD for the Batman universe and rightfully so
Completely agree with what you said here. I especially felt the atmosphere in villain missions like "a surprise for the commissioner" its just eerie seeing an abandoned place that usually is supposed to be whimsical just empty and run down. Even imo the DS version captured the mood really well (also danny elfmans score is awesome)
i've been convincing all my friends that LEGO batman the video game is the perfect lego game all this time, yet i cannot prove why. words itself isn't enough to deliver how splendid this game truly is. and now i saw your video. im going to share this video to my friend ASAP.
As someone who played this game as a kid, and replayed it about a month ago, I can confirm that this is got me reinvested in Batman, as the soundtrack convinced me to watch the 1989 film. I have yet to watch the other films, which hopefully will change in the near future.
Good stuff, but you forgot to mention the opening cutscene to the Joker levels when they are playing cards in their hideout. I always thought the atmosphere that brief part creates was brilliant.
This is exactly what happened to me after I saw the villains in this game I did research on who they are and this game made me a comic book fan so without this game I wouldn't have been into comics and no nothing about super heroes
perdão meu inglês, minha língua original é o português então desculpa qualquer erro. I love the atmosphere of the game, the levels make you FEEL IN GOTHAM. it's amazing. the police sirens in the background, the windows with most windows closed or lights off. I remember seeing abandoned buildings, destroyed houses and enemies around every corner and I thought "I will never live here". the songs also match so perfectly for each stage.
Anyone else notice just how creepy the music is when you build that penguin ride in Zoo’s Company. The “cheerful” music coming from the machine sounds sad
"It appeals to all, without heavily leaning to only one." This is what all superhero entertainment should be, or all entertainment for that matter. Walt Elias Disney believed in this mind set, the man was truly a legend. It's a shame that many try and shun this line of thinking. For there is truly no better way to make a story, then to make it for everyone.
It's interesting how both this game and Arkham Asylum were the first in their respective series' and focus more on the horror aspects than their sequels. Could be a coincidence, or could be the time they came out, but it's really cool how similar they are.
I think is worth mentioning that the game's setting is also heavily inspired by Batman the Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures; many of the character designs are taken from it and the title screen intro is an almost perfect recreation, I think that's also why it uses Tim Burton's ost, the show used an arrangement of it.
Wow, not only did I learn a bit more about this game, but your completely right. The reason for why it's a perfect Batman game make sense to me and it's a favorite game of mine for sure. I do enjoy Lego Jurassic World and Lego Marvel Superheroes more but Lego Batman is such a good Lego game, better than it's sequels I say. Because I prefer Batman over most of DC's characters.
So here’s my story of Batman Knowledge: I play Lego Batman: The Videogame, I like it. I get the sequel, I learn about the justice. I get the third game, I learn about Martian Manhunter, the Lantern Corps, and all that stuff. So basically, Lego Batman 1 got me into Batman.
@@CyberLocky exactly! I literally went on TH-cam to look up characters and the animated series were always the first clips to pop up. Even the more exotic characters were on there, which only hyped me up even more. Unfortunately, Lego didn't make all those characters into minifigs. So some pieces of mine were "altered" (ruined) to look like other's. And I got the game in 09 so Unfortunately the brand was discontinued. It was hard to get your hands on minifigs, let alone a set. But yeah I'm still a Batman and DC fan to this day because of this game.
this was my childhood game and it was the best gift ever i used to play this all the time i enjoyed it so much even the fact we got so many levels and the villians
Lego Batman the game is literally the epitome of nostalgia for me, so many special memories playing this with my little brother, and it still holds up as a fun little weekend game to this day
I love how this game tells its own unique story. They could have easily just made a Lego Batman game recreating the 4 movies from the 80s and 90s but they didn't. They took some inspiration from those movies and the animated series, as well as comic lore and created a unique experience that felt like the perfect combination of what makes Batman great. It is easily the best Lego game because of the creativity behind the story, characters, level design and atmosphere.
I got lego batman around 2016 7 years after the game relelased, and played it for 4 hours, back then i was so young that i came to a point where i stopped playing the game, so my parents confiscated it due to being too hard for my age. Those 4 hours of lego Batman were the best...
LEGO Batman was also my first introduction to the franchise and I agree with everything you said. It inspired me to check out BTAS and then Arkham Asylum when it came out, mostly due to the fact that I really liked Harley Quinn from this game! Still super into Batman and I know for sure it’s all because of this game. Perfect intro to Batman indeed.
Lego Batman is essentially the idealized and definitive version of the Batman character and universe in Lego form. The atmosphere of Gotham, The Batcave, the gadgets and vehicles is the Burton/Animated style. The villains are all in their traditional early-00s comic book costumes and are grouped together like the films. The Bat-family is Batman, Nightwing, Tim Drake/Robin, and Barbara Gordon/Batgirl like the Animated Series. Every bio read-up is either the traditional comic book bio or the animated series version which most of the time is better. Visually, playing this game is like reading an issue from No Man’s Land, Hush, or Bruce Wayne Fugitive since those were all contemporary stories at the time. It’s almost like a playable, legofied encyclopedia for Batman and his world. Everything you’d ever need to know about Batman can be learned from this game.
This game was my introduction to Batman and honestly it was just like you described. It all looked so cool I wanted to know more about it. Been a fan ever since. I thought Scarecrow’s mini figure looked so cool and since then he’s always been my favorite Batman villain. Still looking for a way to watch BTAS in the Netherlands tbh

I could see a bit of that with average-height Penguin and the implication that Batman is still developing relative to the typical portrayal of him. Even Joker could’ve taken inspiration from it with evil Thomas Wayne.
Batman 1989 best movie for Tim Burton, Batman Animated Series best cartoon for young or old audiences, Best Lego game is Lego batman, and Best Arkham game is Asylum.

Seriously, the boxart is straight up art. The way the minifigures and sets are rendered don't feel like a toy. The titles are even so matter of fact.
100%ing all super villain levels gives you the Arkham Asylum mini kit which is actually an exact mini model of the Arkham Asylum one from the set.
