@@CyberLocky So basically it's just that you don't understand the character. She's not a badly written character. She's spoiled, she's emotionally immature, and is coddled. Sometimes characters like this just exist in real life, and it was intentionally done to make her absurdly innocent and tragic in the grand scheme of things. She clearly turned out like this because she was spoiled to the point of being infantile, she's clearly never had to take care of herself before, and thus she had a spoiled upbringing that never prepared her for anything of this kind of horror. Even then, she quickly adapts some form of being able to summon some form of agency against the predator that develops an obsession with her. Much like most things of this nature, this is seen very culturally different, and this is just a case of western ignorance not fully understanding the idea being presented with Yuka and her "spoiled little sister" trope and how much more understanding Japanese audiences are to the archtype of this kind of character, who over the course of the game from Pathetic, to Sympathetic, to actually surprisingly competent by the end of the experience, given what she's adapted to. The fact that you're sitting here, hating on an innocent young girl in a horrifying situation so disproportionately to this extent, just because her innocent and spoiled nature slightly annoyed you and even went over your head, I think, shows that you don't have the empathy or character writing literacy skills to be cut out for any form of critical analysis.

Based on this horribly bad take of yours that I'm reading, I can already see you're not cut out for understanding the characters or this game in general, you don't understand writing, nuance, character or fiction in general, you seem very unfair, close-minded, self-important, assumptive and I just don't want to watch your video. While having a COVID extra chapter that references the dead patient hostpital so what is going on with this franchise
Traditionally, children younger than seven weren’t fully in this world, and wouldn’t leave ghosts behind. So if the principal had gone for Yoshie the day before, we might not have had the whole alternate dimension thing

This is crazy, just a week ago I was scouring youtube for a proper Corpse Party deep dive. Found not much, somberly accepted that this game prolly got buried in the depths of the internet. And here we are! Thank you man for taking the time and effort to make such a in depth video! Made my day:)
I hadn't even noticed how long the video was until the Chapter 5 intermission 😭 I was so engrossed in it and it was so entertaining! I definitely got introducted to Corpse Party when I was way too young so this was also a good refresher on the story lol

I've never gotten nightmares from watching spooky content before bed..until this video.. popped melatonin and dreamed I was stuck in heavenly host. I was also scared to fall asleep with the lights off. Amazing video 😍

1:37:49 i think this might be because it was the "first" reality. the deaths get worse and more brutal each time they reset or remember things they shouldn't, so that's what happened here. to add on, maybe naomi disagreeing with seiko's hope was her somehow remembering that she couldn't make it out in another timeline.
Yeah I do wonder if the reality death thing was even planned during the first game or if it's just a coincidence but it works well with what we learn In book of shadows.
Yeah I'm kinda glad it's not just full on slasher but I would have liked someone not from the same school to also survive. Taguchi would have been best
@@CyberLocky Agreed. All of the characters who died with the exception of the first girl, the mentor, and the temporary party member that goes insane weren't developed much at all. The only death that really got anything out of me was the first; the other two were easy to see coming.
@@CyberLocky honestly this is the biggest missed opportunity, even with how the Sachiko EA thing works - imagine someone from another school who doesn't just... Kizami, but instead joins the crew but at the last minute realizes they need one of the crew's paper pieces to survive. The other schools' characters don't have a very big role in BC and I don't remember it being played with in BoS, but I haven't played it in forever. Imagine a world where they actually focused on honing character and story in the original vein instead of... Weird I feel like they did something different, but that must have been a nightmare I had. Surely.

@@CyberLocky You definitely spend more time with them and I think you do play as them yeah; I think BoS might be my favorite, when it's on point it slaps... and then there's the teacher chapter :v but I'm definitely looking forward to your thoughts on it when you do a video on it. Interesting to hear about the birthday game though, I never played it since it was only translated after my hyperfixation ended, think it's worth it? It always gave me mixed vibes but I know there's still more horror in it than the trailer implies... Might check it out.

I like your use of the chibi character models as an avatar to narrate the video during sections that aren't showing any gameplay (or the nexus diagram). I find it's nice to have a visual representation of how things work and all that (even if I personally know how the space functions already). Fun video!
Just for the record "the cock of the walk" is a reference to a male chicken, specifically one strutting around the yard and looking very, well, cocky. It is somewhat comparable to "alpha" if the judgment criteria was coolness factor instead of fighting prowess. The phrase is often used sarcastically to imply self-importance (a kind of "self-appointed alpha") but that doesn't seem to be the context here. So, basically "Right now you are the coolest guy in the building, so act like it!" (I live in southern US, where people still say weird stuff like this, lol.)
@@CyberLocky My guess would be that they wanted something that would show that this character is lower class, as this is very much a "southern hick" saying and I have noticed translators using a southern accent to convey the less polite form of Japanese. Which, it does kinda fit, as both vaguely imply farming backgrounds as opposed to polite city folk talk. It seems to me that Byakudan in general is implied to be a lower class school, with Kizami's flashback showing a rude sister and a sort of scruffy child version of him. He "puts on airs", trying to look sophisticated, but his true nature shows through when taken away from society. (Am I the only one who thinks he could be Hannibal Lecter's kid?) It would then make sense that Ohkawa would think that the bad boy from a fancier school was "the cock of the walk". But my American ass could be way off on Japanese culture. XD
@@DynamiteRaven Kizami's sister was only leaning in his ass because Kizami was being crazy as usual. It's likely she had to cuss him out on a number of occasions due to his poor, if not psychotic, actions. He was about to torture his friend's hamster. Dude was off his rocker since day 1.
I really like the dimension diagram, I'm sure it helps people new to the series understand the dimensions thing but also... I've played this game full through at least three times and I've *never* noticed the floor colors showing which dimension they are in holy shit how?!

The message in the beginning "Sachi is my pride and joy" is one I always read as "Sachi is my pride and toy" and I believe you could read it as both making the message especially good

Corpse Party has always been one of my favorite and most remembered horror games. i LOVE IT. Thank you so much for giving us more content on it. And I can't wait until your next video on it! I watched a playthrough of Book of Shadow's but was SO confused and kind of dipped off after that because I was just so lost. I'm really excited to get a more accurate picture on what the f is going on in later games. Can't wait!
Surprised no one had made a video doing a full deep dive in this format, ik there was others that sorta did recaps and full series recap. I watched them and made sure my video would be different xd
I played this game blind when I was 13, and man did it have an affect on me. Aside from the character ends, the main thing I think about when I think about this game is Yoshiki screaming, "SHINOZAKI!", due to how long I'd gotten stuck in chapter 2 and 4, to the point I'll mimic it if I see the title or read him saying it.
Did you play the Third Game (Blood Drive) as well? You get hit with one more absolutely heart wrenching line involving Seiko in that game that got me tearing up again after I absolutely heave-cried at Chapter 1 in the original game...
@@CyberLocky I'll be very curious your thoughts on Blood Drive because when I was buying it, people seemed to LOVE it or they HAAAAAATED it. I saw very little in-between (thankfully for me, I LOVED it) I only just played the three Corpse Party last month and Seiko x Naomi absolutely wrecked me. I loved how for much of the 3rd game, it was just about as much of Naomi's PTSD and dealing with Seiko's forgotten death as it was Heavenly Host.

I love that I've listened through/watched through this as I've been cleaning. About Yuka....I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU'VE SAID ABOUT HER. Why are you like this, Yuka? 🤣But yeah, Kizami is my favorite character with Naho being a close second.

I absolutely loved this video!!! You should totally review the manga and the other games as well, this franchise deserves more love and recognition for how groundbreaking it was for horror indie RPG games. Excellent work!!! May I suggest tacking all the old Japanese RPG games next? There was a boom back on the early 2010's (mad father, the witch's house, the forest of drizzling rain, ib, misao, noelle, etc) most of them had a tiny universe that sometimes collided with others, and never really knew if that went anywhere- it would be cool listening to something like that while I work!

Thanks for making this massive video, it helped me through my post-game depression lol. You know a game was phenomenal when the realization that you’ll never experience it for the first time again just leaves a void in your soul for a few days.
Now that I've finished the video, have another comment for engagement. Great video! No other video I've seen actually talks about the extra chapters beyond mentioning the glasses ghost I think, haha. Since you asked... Best character is Seiko, it is absolutely *criminal* how fast she dies, even in the sequels. Devil Gremlin Creature energy indeed, which is the best part, she brings levity and is just such a perfect character. When she gets depressed or serious you really feel it, and she never becomes annoying because she's so selfless, probably the most selfless character aside from Yui who is like impossibly selfless. When she tells Naomi that memories of lost loved ones are never a burden, hits me hard every time, and in BoS when there's the scene with her little sibling(s)? Devastating. Easily the most multi-faceted character in my eyes. Second place is Yoshiki, it's Yoshiki man, all the reasons you said already. I feel like my dislike of Ayumi mainly comes from later games, becoming obsessed with saving the others is endearing but... The game that must not be named. Most under-utilized character is Mayu who is given two seconds of screen time and it's the single most irritating scene in the game honestly; BoS uses her well though, but the *real* problem is the dynamic between her and Morishige could have been the most interesting addition from the 'original' Corpse Party, and the fact Mayu gets no time as a character really hurts Morishige's turn. Yuka is the one who is hurt most from the increased focus she gets, they should have just made her younger instead of as old as she is and acting childish; it makes everything about her less forgivable. If she was really young and sucked in by accident it would be even sadder, and the crush on Satoshi would be far less annoying, like she's an actual kid who doesn't understand the different forms of love, like the childhood promise to marry their parent kinda trope? The original CParty only mentioned it in a single ending based on who died IIRC which also made it less weird, BCovered puts it way too in your face; if she was younger and it only showed when she was darkened, having her always be a victim except for one ending like the endings where Ayumi/Naomi go full darkened would have been a great twist. I apologize for the long rant, this was my hyperfixation as a kid for a good while bwahaha
Yeah I agree its so sad how fast Sekio dies but it really creates the backbone of the story. So as much as its sad its legit the most shocking part that sets the tone of the game. Seiko is like too powerful for the story in a way she would have lessened the scares and was the perfect death. Yet even in death has crazy impact in the story with the flashbacks. Is integral to Naomis character arc, and in death is helping Naomi and Satoshi. You really feel her prescence throughout the whole game. The ending with Naomi telling Satoshi I want to speak with her one last time is also so impactful. BLOOD DRIVE YOU HAD SO MUCH POTTENTIAL XD

I don't think her dying in this one when she does is a mistake, and *how* it happens is excellent; I would really love to have more time with her in BoS, even though it does a great job setting the tone for the game, it's just disappointing to not get more time with her. I don't know this drive of blood you speak of. Are you sure you didn't hallucinate it? Should probably see a doctor about that.
I cannot thank you enough! I LOVE these games and had no way to really tell my fiancé about them that would cover everything while still keeping the vibe that the games gave you, went looking and couldn't find anything else good until I found yours. THIS VIDEO WAS PERFECT. He was fully invested the entire time and I had an absolute blast reliving the games and even learning a couple things that I had never known/seen before. I can't wait until you do the rest of the games. We will be watching every single one. Great work!!!!

after playing the game, i really reccomend reading the manga adaptation of blood covered (though honestly, every corpse party manga besides Musume was actually pretty good). the manga does a few things different from the game and some characters are written a little bit differently (seiko is even more of a gremlin)

I think it'd be nice for the first Corpse Party to have a reboot so that characters like from the Byakudan, Musashigawa, Saint Cruz, Kokuhaku, and Taguchi etc have a more fleshed out role as the main characters. Some of them even being the survivors of heavenly host.

First time I played this game I had literal nightmares about it for a few weeks and couldn’t play the game. That being said I love this game with a passion. Too bad everything following this game goes off the deep end.
2:49:22 - Ayumi must've taken boxing classes or martial arts because she whooped Naomi's ass real good. 😂😂😂 And Ayumi burning Naomi's puppet scrap was brutal as well. She acts like the classroom bully than the class rep when under The Darkening. 😂😂😂
27:55 That poster with the organs and blood running down it- I thought it was a foreshadowing to Mayu. Book of Shadows went into that detail too- With her gut having a huge scar. The anatomy poster seems to depict Internal Bleeding as a type of warning of danger or something else sinister happening in the same room but in a different closed space. The lore of this game is interesting.

Yeah I want to make my videos covering games to be as easy to understand as possible XD so glad I achieved that. Yoshiki is the GOAT best character in the whole series as a teenager I liked him and Naomi a lot cause they felt the most realistic in terms of being in that sitaution but Yoshikis loyalty overtakes his fear. I think, truthfully, the creators tossed in the whole being erased as one last kick in the pants and then had to scramble to work around it (or ignore it with the 73 trio)
its been a while since i played the psp ver loooong time ago. beside additional stuff like chap 1 victim memoir they added i also realized they shortened naho skirt lol. Also i might edit this later after i passed that point but i wonder if PC remake adding back stuff like blodied pixel art of ayyumi past certain point since she was iin period. This detiail is removed from 3DS port. Kinda sad considering in asian culture, woman in period not only become sensitive to ghost but also passively attracting said ghost. yeah they still removed it lol. About the plot hole regarding the 3 kid as center of the curse, At that point the schoolkground curse depicted to gain some sentient and even manipulating sachiko to some sort. The school did seperate her and her mother, Deliberately giving the video tape titled "sin" to sabotage the exorcism, and appointing a new girl in Red as sachiko successor to keep itself afloat (either yuuki or yuka). For yoshikazu case, it is just my hypothesis: it seems the 3 kids were added to even the number of pilar of the curse into 4. In japanese culture number 4 are considered bad considering it share pronounsiation to death "shi" lastly how did sachiko manage to gain a body? i have 2 hypothesis: 1st It is possible that the body are simply random kid possessed by sachiko. The kid did exist, have a family and move oiutside the town before become untrackable (most likely killed later) 2nd The school curse did alter memmory of the investigator and reltives of the victimm. Remember the school had ability to erase someone existence. TLDR the school curse appear to be increadibly powerfull, i wont be survive if local kami (god) is invioolved. Specially since the school itself had more authority then sachiko.
Yeah the curse really is just the explanation for everything that does make sense it separated Yoshi and Sachiko probably darkening makes Sachiko forget her mother completely

I was never able to play these games back then being a wimp but now hearing the story (and watching the anime) this Halloween I want to take a crack at it and see if I would TRUELY get the true ending but I bet blind I would have gotten the ending where Yuka dies because I would have walked the other way no lie lol

Maybe but the story seemed more focused on her needing to pee all the time and never using the bucket. Plus telling us all the creepy brother stuff than to actually develop her. Her bio also just says she's spoiled so acts younger.

1:37:49 i think this might be because it was the "first" reality. the deaths get worse and more brutal each time they reset or remember things they shouldn't, so that's what happened here. to add on, maybe naomi disagreeing with seiko's hope was her somehow remembering that she couldn't make it out in another timeline.
Yeah I do wonder if the reality death thing was even planned during the first game or if it's just a coincidence but it works well with what we learn In book of shadows.

@@CyberLocky Agreed. All of the characters who died with the exception of the first girl, the mentor, and the temporary party member that goes insane weren't developed much at all. The only death that really got anything out of me was the first; the other two were easy to see coming.
@@CyberLocky honestly this is the biggest missed opportunity, even with how the Sachiko EA thing works - imagine someone from another school who doesn't just... Kizami, but instead joins the crew but at the last minute realizes they need one of the crew's paper pieces to survive. The other schools' characters don't have a very big role in BC and I don't remember it being played with in BoS, but I haven't played it in forever. Imagine a world where they actually focused on honing character and story in the original vein instead of... Weird I feel like they did something different, but that must have been a nightmare I had. Surely.

Just for the record "the cock of the walk" is a reference to a male chicken, specifically one strutting around the yard and looking very, well, cocky. It is somewhat comparable to "alpha" if the judgment criteria was coolness factor instead of fighting prowess. The phrase is often used sarcastically to imply self-importance (a kind of "self-appointed alpha") but that doesn't seem to be the context here. So, basically "Right now you are the coolest guy in the building, so act like it!" (I live in southern US, where people still say weird stuff like this, lol.)

@@CyberLocky My guess would be that they wanted something that would show that this character is lower class, as this is very much a "southern hick" saying and I have noticed translators using a southern accent to convey the less polite form of Japanese. Which, it does kinda fit, as both vaguely imply farming backgrounds as opposed to polite city folk talk.
It seems to me that Byakudan in general is implied to be a lower class school, with Kizami's flashback showing a rude sister and a sort of scruffy child version of him. He "puts on airs", trying to look sophisticated, but his true nature shows through when taken away from society. (Am I the only one who thinks he could be Hannibal Lecter's kid?) It would then make sense that Ohkawa would think that the bad boy from a fancier school was "the cock of the walk".
But my American ass could be way off on Japanese culture. XD

Kizami's sister was only leaning in his ass because Kizami was being crazy as usual. It's likely she had to cuss him out on a number of occasions due to his poor, if not psychotic, actions. He was about to torture his friend's hamster. Dude was off his rocker since day 1.

Aside from the character ends, the main thing I think about when I think about this game is Yoshiki screaming, "SHINOZAKI!", due to how long I'd gotten stuck in chapter 2 and 4, to the point I'll mimic it if I see the title or read him saying it.

I only just played the three Corpse Party last month and Seiko x Naomi absolutely wrecked me. I loved how for much of the 3rd game, it was just about as much of Naomi's PTSD and dealing with Seiko's forgotten death as it was Heavenly Host.

You should totally review the manga and the other games as well, this franchise deserves more love and recognition for how groundbreaking it was for horror indie RPG games. Excellent work!!! May I suggest tacking all the old Japanese RPG games next? There was a boom back on the early 2010's (mad father, the witch's house, the forest of drizzling rain, ib, misao, noelle, etc) most of them had a tiny universe that sometimes collided with others, and never really knew if that went anywhere- it would be cool listening to something like that while I work!

Now that I've finished the video, have another comment for engagement. Great video! No other video I've seen actually talks about the extra chapters beyond mentioning the glasses ghost I think, haha. Since you asked...
Best character is Seiko, it is absolutely *criminal* how fast she dies, even in the sequels. Devil Gremlin Creature energy indeed, which is the best part, she brings levity and is just such a perfect character. When she gets depressed or serious you really feel it, and she never becomes annoying because she's so selfless, probably the most selfless character aside from Yui who is like impossibly selfless. When she tells Naomi that memories of lost loved ones are never a burden, hits me hard every time, and in BoS when there's the scene with her little sibling(s)? Devastating. Easily the most multi-faceted character in my eyes.
Second place is Yoshiki, it's Yoshiki man, all the reasons you said already. I feel like my dislike of Ayumi mainly comes from later games, becoming obsessed with saving the others is endearing but... The game that must not be named.
Most under-utilized character is Mayu who is given two seconds of screen time and it's the single most irritating scene in the game honestly; BoS uses her well though, but the *real* problem is the dynamic between her and Morishige could have been the most interesting addition from the 'original' Corpse Party, and the fact Mayu gets no time as a character really hurts Morishige's turn.
Yuka is the one who is hurt most from the increased focus she gets, they should have just made her younger instead of as old as she is and acting childish; it makes everything about her less forgivable. If she was really young and sucked in by accident it would be even sadder, and the crush on Satoshi would be far less annoying, like she's an actual kid who doesn't understand the different forms of love, like the childhood promise to marry their parent kinda trope? The original CParty only mentioned it in a single ending based on who died IIRC which also made it less weird, BCovered puts it way too in your face; if she was younger and it only showed when she was darkened, having her always be a victim except for one ending like the endings where Ayumi/Naomi go full darkened would have been a great twist.
I apologize for the long rant, this was my hyperfixation as a kid for a good while bwahaha
Yeah I agree its so sad how fast Sekio dies but it really creates the backbone of the story. So as much as its sad its legit the most shocking part that sets the tone of the game.
Seiko is like too powerful for the story in a way she would have lessened the scares and was the perfect death. Yet even in death has crazy impact in the story with the flashbacks. Is integral to Naomis character arc, and in death is helping Naomi and Satoshi. You really feel her prescence throughout the whole game. The ending with Naomi telling Satoshi I want to speak with her one last time is also so impactful. BLOOD DRIVE YOU HAD SO MUCH POTTENTIAL XD

I don't think her dying in this one when she does is a mistake, and *how* it happens is excellent; I would really love to have more time with her in BoS, even though it does a great job setting the tone for the game, it's just disappointing to not get more time with her.

after playing the game, i really reccomend reading the manga adaptation of blood covered (though honestly, every corpse party manga besides Musume was actually pretty good). the manga does a few things different from the game and some characters are written a little bit differently (seiko is even more of a gremlin)

I think it'd be nice for the first Corpse Party to have a reboot so that characters like from the Byakudan, Musashigawa, Saint Cruz, Kokuhaku, and Taguchi etc have a more fleshed out role as the main characters. Some of them even being the survivors of heavenly host.

The anatomy poster seems to depict Internal Bleeding as a type of warning of danger or something else sinister happening in the same room but in a different closed space. The lore of this game is interesting.

Yeah I want to make my videos covering games to be as easy to understand as possible XD so glad I achieved that. Yoshiki is the GOAT best character in the whole series as a teenager I liked him and Naomi a lot cause they felt the most realistic in terms of being in that sitaution but Yoshikis loyalty overtakes his fear. I think, truthfully, the creators tossed in the whole being erased as one last kick in the pants and then had to scramble to work around it (or ignore it with the 73 trio)
its been a while since i played the psp ver loooong time ago. beside additional stuff like chap 1 victim memoir they added i also realized they shortened naho skirt lol. Also i might edit this later after i passed that point but i wonder if PC remake adding back stuff like blodied pixel art of ayyumi past certain point since she was iin period. This detiail is removed from 3DS port. Kinda sad considering in asian culture, woman in period not only become sensitive to ghost but also passively attracting said ghost. yeah they still removed it lol.
About the plot hole regarding the 3 kid as center of the curse, At that point the schoolkground curse depicted to gain some sentient and even manipulating sachiko to some sort. The school did seperate her and her mother, Deliberately giving the video tape titled "sin" to sabotage the exorcism, and appointing a new girl in Red as sachiko successor to keep itself afloat (either yuuki or yuka). For yoshikazu case, it is just my hypothesis: it seems the 3 kids were added to even the number of pilar of the curse into 4. In japanese culture number 4 are considered bad considering it share pronounsiation to death "shi" lastly how did sachiko manage to gain a body? i have 2 hypothesis:
1st It is possible that the body are simply random kid possessed by sachiko. The kid did exist, have a family and move oiutside the town before become untrackable (most likely killed later)
2nd The school curse did alter memmory of the investigator and reltives of the victimm. Remember the school had ability to erase someone existence.
TLDR the school curse appear to be increadibly powerfull, i wont be survive if local kami (god) is invioolved. Specially since the school itself had more authority then sachiko.
Yeah the curse really is just the explanation for everything that does make sense it separated Yoshi and Sachiko probably darkening makes Sachiko forget her mother completely

I was never able to play these games back then being a wimp but now hearing the story (and watching the anime) this Halloween I want to take a crack at it and see if I would TRUELY get the true ending but I bet blind I would have gotten the ending where Yuka dies because I would have walked the other way no lie lol

Ayumi was the most annoying character here. She was in to these occult stuff and was the first to panic and the most panicked one among the group.
Yeah her character might be into the occult stuff to try and get over her fear. The fact she's a shinozaki might be why she is so easily possessed

Maybe but the story seemed more focused on her needing to pee all the time and never using the bucket. Plus telling us all the creepy brother stuff than to actually develop her. Her bio also just says she's spoiled so acts younger.
