  • I LOVE this technique!!!! Really excited to share techniques I've been developing this week with my gel plates. So simple and so versatile! You can keep it pretty straightforward or go for something more complex - either way you're going to get good results and a few surprises...

    I tried this with mixed results, then thought I'd try with water-based relief printing ink--bingo! It worked great! Much better than acrylic! No problem with the ink drying too fast. I could easily pull a print. I tried it with the paper collagraph, masking tape, and the ball point pen technique--all worked great. You can also press harder for a cleaner print! Hope this is helpful for you and your followers. Your videos are great--thank you!

      This is golden advice! I've not tried water based blcok ink on gel plate yet - you've inspired me to do it and make a video. You'll get full credit of course! Hoping that spreading the word about the joys of making is encouraging people to be creative and enjoy the moment : ) thanks again Ann, makes it really rewarding when comments spur me on ; )

  • @Xenopticon
    @Xenopticon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wow. Each of these is wonderful in its own way. I particularly love the shirt piece and the Icarus piece--especially the fact that you spread the Icarus across two plates. Definitely something to think more about, there. Also, really appreciate the way the odd areas of remaining dark ink within the body of the shirt read as form indications, not just blobs of ink. The shirt really appears to drape and rumple. I continue to be amazed by your work, and also by the subtlety that comes from such minor variations in the thickness of your collagraph relief plates.
    I'm also glad to see you making some work about your brother. The shirt, hanging by itself, was already pretty evocative. But in the context of the other elements, the story is rich and full of the sweet, yet painful, memories of someone sadly gone too soon. I've experienced a lot of that lately, as many of us have, this past 18 months. That work with the shirt (and, now I think of it, the Icarus piece, as well) really speak to me about loss and memories, and give me ideas for how to work on similar topics, myself. Thanks, Mark. Much appreciated!

    Love this technique! Clothing makes a great subject -- and Icarus is a favorite of mine, as well. Thanks.
    Frequent Flyer
    Skywriting
    the perfect escape,
    Icarus
    flew waxed wings,
    defiant, into the sun.
    He never looked down,
    never once
    reconsidered that
    blindsided
    ascent; not
    with the warm wind in his face.
    Why would he look down?
    Midnight falls;
    eternity blue
    traced half past
    the new moon,
    to silvered horizons. No.
    The never looked down.

    Thanks for another wonderful video.
    I created a home made gelli plate and got quite good results.
    This sort of plate works even better than commercial ones but in the tropics of Australia my plate shrank over time and got a bit mouldy.
    A skin discarded by a resident carpet snake made a wonderful print but there was much hit and miss.
    I did not fully understand the need for thin first layer, light touch imprint and need to let it dry before next layer on plate.
    You have made this clear.

    Hi Mark, Another great video. Your enthusiasm and subject matter are always refreshing. I believe that I am the one who supplied the link to the deli paper in UK - I stumbled upon it somehow but live in the States. I had heard in UK/EUROPE that sometimes it is referred by another name. Love all of these collagraph techniques and your results. The shirt and the Icarus are great. I really like your built up techniques. Do you have a go-to black, I have three, one cheap and two good brands but the all roll out very grey which is fine for the parts you want a lighter look, but no good if I want some strong definition. You are the only person I have seen thus far working with defined images on Gelli that owe a lot to drawing skills…. It is just great so see things like your shirt, gives me hope! Best Wishes for the holidays!

      Hi Lindy, I know what you mean about the black. I use Amsterdam mainly, or Daler Rowney graduate. Collagraphs technique is definitely a good way of keeping a nice rich depth to tones and colours. Laser transfers are fun, and I've heard that putting the copies through printer 2 or 3 times helps a stronger transfer....... mmmm, not sure I have the patience for that!!!

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cookie - the paper I use is mostly smooth cartridge, ripped from sketchbooks, sometimes straight from a ream. anywhere between 140 and 220gsm. Couldn't tell you the brand but it's all pretty good quality, acid free etc.

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Suzi, thanks for support! Yep, I got about 7 before paper collage clogs up and stops picking the paint so clearly. I guess a benefit of the 'shirt' technique is that you can keep cutting out bits and adding them on to kind refresh the collage! Not tried it yet but could work...

    • @yeatesmakes

      just plain on paper - I used a colour so the collage would be more visible on video - white on white collage doesn't make for great viewing!!!

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi kathryn, I used Liquitex matt medium. Layers must be totally dry then add layer of gel medium and let that dry for at least 15 minutes before pulling off.

    • @susantische7655
      @susantische7655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gel medium is what is needed as it is thicker, comes in tubs (regular or thick, matte, semi, gloss, or gloss) Matte medium is too fluid-comes in bottles. @kathrinkromer
