      That is such a kind message Cheryl. Such a pleasure to share - I honestly had no idea the channel would grow into what it has so far and, by some of the messages, I am getting a feeling of how appreciated my expreiments are! It's amazing that people will be prompted to dust off gel plate or try something new in art as a result of a video I make. Thank you, for always leaving such enthusiastic and encouraging messages x

    I am going to try this on fabric as I like working with fabric and thread. I did your emboss method where you did a wax rub over a toad linocut, mine was a rubber stamp of a bird and I used acrylic paint mixed with Golden GAC-900 Fabric PrInting Medium , an approx 1: 1 ratio on my small round Gelli plate. Very approx as this was just an experimental piece. I used a piece of cotton/polyester fabric, from a ripped up duvet and the image transfered remarkably well. This idea is is going to give me a lot of inspiration and I keep looking at my bird and smiling. So thank you for these videos, I have become a new subscriber and am going to work my way through them and try incorporating some of them into my fabric pieces. It was pure chance I discovered your channel and very pleased I did. You are an excellent tutor by the way, making it easy to follow your guidance.

    After many failed attempts I finally got a pretty good result this morning (after leaving overnight). I used the chinagraph pencil over a photocopied image and the text embossing with a pen. The amount of paint, pressure, paper types for which jobs and just how long to leave it for are a bit tricky but I'll persevere! This result has me pleased enough to want to keep experimenting. Your unconventional use of the plate is so refreshing and inspiring. The possibilities are a joy to ponder 👌 Thank you. Very grateful. From Brisbane QLD (thank the goddess for technology!)

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So hard to tell Lily - could simply be the ink and paper used for the magazine. Some work, some don't. Use a heavy body acrylic, be quick, thin layer and don't leave the magazine page on the plate too long. Most of all, don't give up!

      @yeatesmakes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I need to get some. I like using the ballpoint pens because I can see clearly where I have embossed without angling the light all weird and straining my old eyes!!!!!

    • @CraigsOverijse
      @CraigsOverijse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yeatesmakes my eyes are not great either due to age but the embossed lines are pretty easy to see on most cards or papers, although often a more robust paper gives a better effect although also stuff like Velum paper is also easy to see. If you do get some I would recommend using something give a bit of give underneath the surface something like craft foam or felt the back side of a cutting board or even old packing materials would work this just allows the paper to give easily unlike a harder surface. They vary in size and maybe very interesting to use this fact for shading or texturing. Really enjoying watching all your previous vidoes.

    Hi the class went well and there was lots of happy students only the one thing I tried to do is the ball point pen transfer it didn't happen for me. I think I had the same pen as you were using but it didn't transfer onto the gelli plate. I might not have been gentle enough looking back at your video and pressed as per usual, or is there another possibility? I also had the same problem with the oil pastels and that looked so good when you did it!!
    Any advice welcome Thanks!!

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the ballpoint pen, you definitely need to press hard and make sure the paper is embossed deep enough to not pick and paint up during transfer. Same with oil pastel, if you want a decent resist, make sure you put a good coat of oil pastel (unless you want the broken, uneven textures.

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin, it is the emboss. I use a ballpoint as it has a hard nib. Not sure how you are suggesting using pencil and tracing paper. Note of caution though, graphite transfers really well on gel plate but leaves a residue that will stain your next few prints!!!!

    how come magazine ink picks up paint, but inkjet ink doesnt?

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glossy magazines mainly use toner which is made mostly of plastic. pretty sure that it is the plastic and oil content that resists.

    Are you using JUST BIC pens or ANY ballpoint pen?

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any ball point will work as it is the emboss that enables the transfer : )

    Excellent video thank you. This is just what I need to see! What type of paper are you tracing onto again? And have you ever traced with a tracing stylist? The ones with the ballpoint but no ink?

  • @qso3566
    @qso3566 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, I am confused. I've tried ballpoint ink pen, china marker, wax crayon, and Stabilo pencil and simply cannot get an image to transfer. I am laying down a coat of black acrylic, not too thin, not too thick, and I've tried a light touch with the transfer as well as a bit firmer touch. Nothing. No transfer. I want so much to get a successful transfer but no idea what I'm doing wrong. Help! :)

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Go thinner on the acrylic and don't hang around. If the paint starts to dry then transfers won't be clear. If you are doing ballpoint pen, it is about the depth of the emboss not the ink. Persevere qso : )

    Haha nothing wrong with a good trilogy! I doubt there'd be any complaints if you went all Star Wars (I don't know how many 'episodes' there are now lol).
    This technique is really helpful for learning to think about and identify tonal values.
    I like that you 're-use' the techniques for your backgrounds. It shows that you don't need to start from scratch every time and it also shows how you can develop your own style through the choice of techniques and how they are combined. Tfs!

    • @yeatesmakes
      @yeatesmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh my word pippi, I am not going Star Wars with a ballpoint pen! that's too many episodes and the Phantom menace was not good! The collagraph pieces work well for a fair few prints, as do embossed sheets - a bit of scope to play if you can get a few prints!
