What a fantastic sight that it is to see two famous steam locomotives operating together on the same passenger train, SP&S 700 and SP 4449 are both handsome examples of passenger service steam locomotives. It is always enjoyable to see footage of both of these two engines in special excursion service during the modern era when see steam engines in operation is a rare sight.
@Fireheart528 I agree, but Amtrak's rules say there has to be a diesel in the consist. Tons of trips before were run without a diesel, but for whatever reason that's the rule laid out by Amtrak. And if the groups running the trip don't comply, they don't go. Better to run with the diesel than not run at all, I guess.
they are old but they are given more care then any amtrak train could hope to receive. the GS series (daylights) ran long heavy high speed passenger trains since the 30s and still do. Can any diesel today say that? insurance reasons yes but alot of it has to do with dynamic braking i am told.
@southernpacific4346 Most mainline runs on BNSF hauling passengers require they run as an Amtrak train, with an Amtrak diesel and crew. Insurance reasons, plus just in case of a breakdown. Steam engines are old.

AWESOME VIDEO! We were in the red car in front of you in a couple pacing clips! A chase I'll never forget! Thanks for sharing!
This is just awesome, no other words. Thanks..
During 2005 NRHS Convention.
700's numberbroads are already removed.
Two years later the 4449 double heads with another 4-8-4. Union Pacific 844
I kinda like watching steam engine drag 21st century diesels around. It shows that they still rule the rails!
Sp&s 700 and sp 4449 doubleheading to wishram

@ChrisisBass13 I don't know exactly what the rules say but one reason is they have to have it to provide electrical power to the coaches.

How fast was the train going?
Great video, but why is there an Amtrak engine on the train. two 4-8-4s should be more than enough power.

Is the driver of the car deaf? Never responds to your requests. Maybe turn that radio down.
It was white knuckle driving all day that day.
Actually he’s blind. Miracle we even survived.
