Glad to hear your comments on the importance of sleep for recovery. Makes me sad when clients feel just a few hours of sleep is ‘good enough’. It’s a key component of training as well!

SLEEP was/is my secret weapon. As a grandma and someone who is always on the go, I have FINALLY figured out the sleep aspect of TRAINING! It's more than a game changer. I wonder what my life would have been like had I prioritized it more throughout. I know that LIFE happens, but to prioritize daily -- it always makes me happy that I have shared this tool with my kids and now they have figured it out sooner than I did. Makes me a proud mama. This podcast goes into my MUST listens. Have an amazeballs day!

Sleep is the natty’s steroid ;). It makes all the difference! Love you guys and have cranked my metabolism to insanity. At 5’10” 195 pounds…getting stronger weekly and eating 3200 calories 5 days per week and 4500 2 days/week while maintaining weight is a dream for me (I’ve always had a great appetite but now it’s going somewhere useful haha). 💪🏋️‍♂️🔥🤤❤️🥇🍖👌

Being in a caloric deficit for too long affects your sleep, I was having trouble sleeping for a couple of weeks and couldn’t figure out why, never had an issue before. I’m 50 and had been cutting for so long losing 45 lbs but all of a sudden crappy sleep. I just so happened to go on a family weekend trip with extended family and went crazy, eating all the foods I hadn’t eaten in ages and had recently switched back from being a vegetarian for a couple of years to eating meat again, I ate so much crap I was convinced I would put on weight but long story short, felt great, no weight gain and slept like a baby again. The human body is a trip!

Why is it a struggle? At least you don't have to rotate schedules. I'm also on permanent night shift. I take a natural sleep aid on my drive home and use a black-out blind fold. Also, I keep the same sleep routine within 1-2 hours on my days off.

I used to be able to function on 4-6 hours of sleep when I was in my 20's and even felt better! Now I'm almost 40 and sleep has been such a struggle for me to get good, quality, restful sleep. I started a routine a few days ago, about an hour before bed, and I've noticed already an easier time falling asleep. Love that you focus on rest and recovery!

The biggest takeaway I have gotten since I started listening to you guys a few months back is consistency. I struggled with consistency and would always wonder why my training sucked, why my weight was on this roller coaster that I couldn’t control and why I felt like a zombie every day. When I was trying to get everything figured out I started with sleep, once I got that routine squared away everything fell into place. Training was more consistent, weight steadily came down, like I was wanting, all because I put my head on a pillow for a little bit longer every night.

You guys are spot on about everything especially light exposure. Andrew Huberman says that training yourself to getting bright sunlight exposure early in the day and then dimming as it gets darker towards the end of the day will train your circadian rhythm naturally. Interestingly enough, the level of light also makes a big difference too so having a dim light below eye level seems to not disrupt your rythym. I myself am like Sal and any little light will disrupt my sleep so it has to be pitch dark.

I do almost all those things, with exception of eating at 6pm, but I wake up in the middle of the night to pee, and start thinking about my problems. I try to turn my brain off but it's so hard. I used to look at the time, which made it worse. Now I don't look anymore and can go back to sleep . Lots of my clients have the same problem.

I was sitting on the couch with my wife last night and as I looked out the window, I saw some cows out in a field laying down.
I looked at my wife and said “What the hell are you doing still awake? Can’t you see the cows laying down in the field?!”
Puzzled, she asked “what do the cows laying down have to do with me going to bed?”
Smirking, I exclaimed, “Well, obviously it’s PASTURE bed time!”

I have a red bulb in one of my lamps and that's usually the last light to go out. I have a double lamp set up where they are on a power strip together and I just flip the power bar. They also have no shades. Those go out first, ideally around 8 pm. Sometimes I never turn them on when I come in. Then I have a single lamp on a night stand with a shade.
