Very well explained an broken down. Very good teaching skills, it really helps a wider level of drummers understand what your saying. I just watched but ill have to watch again an take it to my drums it's a sweet fill I love vinnie
Thanks Troy. Glad you liked it. I have lots of lessons on my website - including one teaching you to read music from the ground up (specifically aimed at drummers). The link to my site is in the description if you want to check it out. Thanks again, Joe
I really like the way you showed whats really going on ! Its not just a lick! There are musical ideas! Your not making this rudimental in thinking ! Very well done.... I can use this one Idea just as a grounds for starting a solo a nd just with the way you broke this down, there are several motives that can be repeated and mixed and expanded on! Thank You Joe! Teaching us ways to think!
Thanks! I'm glad you like my approach. In all my lessons I try to do the same - find gems of useful ideas that can be applied to everything that we do. Hi Joe..Thanks for this, great video as usual!. I love your Vinnie licks explained videos. Your 'Don't ask me' Nik Kershaw fill video being one of my faves. Talking of Vinnie licks: I would pay a king's ransom to see you do a video explanation of my favourite Vinnie lick: (I'm surprised you've not done it already..there's so many, I know;) It's from the Allan Holdsworth album 'Secrets' and it's the unreal drum intro to the track 'Spokes'.
hello pfefftube nice tu see yours lesson about vinnie playing, would be nice if you talk about the sound of the drums of vinnie ( like settings in the recording studio or something like, recording stuff in the studio. thanks
I don't know what laying the bass drum is. I have a few lessons on my website (see video description) on playing the bass drum (if that's what you meant).
Ahhh... I believe Remo has a model called "vintage" Ambassador and I wasn't sure if those were them or not... Regardless, great lesson and thx for the reply!
Man. keep transcribing these awesome licks and solos.. This is great stuff. Subbed and will follow you on FB. I see you used to do this more than currently but these are the videos getting you the hits :).
Thanks :) There's lots of stuff on TH-cam but my focus moved to the VIP lessons on my website www.joecrabtree.com/join a few years ago. That's where all the new stuff has been going.
I posted this - (put the youtube bit in front) v=UIHG46Qr7SE. I reckon that's what's going on with the extra hihat at the end. I didn't have the tom mics on when I recorded it.
Cheers for the response Joe. My point was that I don't agree with the way the guy is playing it..I feel he's 'cracking a nut with a Sledgehammer'. I hear it as Vinnie playing the hi hat part with a splashed left foot?,some other people have pointed this out and I just wanted your take on it;) I think maybe I should make my own video of how I hear it eh?..;)) Keep up the great work Joe,It's so appreciated. I teach Drums as a peripatetic and your lessons inspire me in my lessons. Many thanks:)
Nice breakdown. I've listened to ur play repeated times, u need to adjust it more bit on the "paused" triplets on the 2nd bar. The feel was just slightly different with the original. The snare on the 2nd beat, feels like it is too rushy for me... :) But overall idea is already correct, thx...
ps..You'd also be settling a running argument I have with a guy here on youtube who's made a video of his version of the 'Spokes' intro(check it out). I've been debating with him that Vinnie plays the hi-hat part with his foot splashed open during the fill, while he says it's played with a stick..please can you back me up on this one Joe?. I can't ask Vinnie himself!..so I'm asking you, because I know you have great ears and an awareness of musical nuance and detail . cheers:)
Hi Joe, great playing and lesson as always. I've got another nice VC fill for you to try your hand at transcribing if it interests you, in a similar vein I believe; it starts at 1:45 in the following video: watch?v=m8sClOiYTN8. Cheers.
I'm convinced that drummers are actually aliens. I'm a guitarist with fifty years experience. I can sight read music. And if you hand me any musical instrument, with a little time alone with it I can coax sounds out of it that won't cause people to run away in horror. But drums? Forget it. I've played with some very good drummers over the years, some who taught drumming as well as playing in bands. They tried their best with me, but no way could I ever get the hang of it. I can get hands going okay, but feet? Nope. It all falls apart when I try to combine feet and hands. Aliens. They're all aliens. 😁

+Sim On Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have lots of lessons on my website www.joecrabtree.com that you might want to check out.
Great teaching man, and I love that you use notation too. So many drummers today can't read sheet music, it's becoming a lost art.
Wow.... great Vinnie lick and nice drumming Joe!
Very cool fill and variations to work. I love the slowly decelerating fills like that!
Your drums sound great, i mean GREAT!!!
Very well explained an broken down. Very good teaching skills, it really helps a wider level of drummers understand what your saying. I just watched but ill have to watch again an take it to my drums it's a sweet fill I love vinnie

excelent... interesting how much you can learn from simple lick
LFMAO with beat 2 and 3 :) Great lesson!
Could you please do a lesson on laying the bass drum
beautifull !!!!

@TheInfideldrummer Thanks :) You can see my methodology in the first part of the SoloWorkshop lesson in the MasterClass on my website
Nice Joe! but it would be even better if you wrote out the sticking patterns over the notes.Keep rocking!
Great stuff. Can you tell me what hi hats and crashes you're using here?
Matt Markus looks like 14" master sound A custom hi hats, 18" k dark crash and 15" A custom crash. Zildjian
I posted this - (put the youtube bit in front) v=UIHG46Qr7SE.
I reckon that's what's going on with the extra hihat at the end. I didn't have the tom mics on when I recorded it.
Thanks :) I just searched for "spokes drum" on youtube and found a great explanation of that. All I'd be doing is stealing that.
Nice Vid! What Evans on the snare? Cheerz
Thanks. I'm not sure. I think it might be a G2

Check out the latest video I posted on tuning. That's pretty much all I've got :)
I notate it and hear it in 32nd notes, 16th triplets, and 16th notes. instead of 16th, triplet, and 8th notes how it is written in this video
ps..You'd also be settling a running argument I have with a guy here on youtube who's made a video of his version of the 'Spokes' intro(check it out). Would be nice with a count in and maybe a metronome on the lick played fast, since the pulse is hard to discern
COOl... thanks for music sheet on all vidéo.Merci
I just love the way your drums sound Joe.. Are those Vintage Ambassadors?
Thanks. It depends what you mean by vintage. They're regular Ambassadors but they'd been on there a long time ;)
Your drums sounds sweet, man! Great job with the transcribing by the way. ;)
Hi Joe, great playing and lesson as always. I've got another nice VC fill for you to try your hand at transcribing if it interests you, in a similar vein I believe; it starts at 1:45 in the following video: watch?v=m8sClOiYTN8. Cheers.

I love you.....
same thing though
