I love these lessons. Breaking down the fill to its basic rudiment makes the most complex fill almost achievable for the likes of me. Always inspirational stuff.
Joe, you're an absolute inspiration both as a musician & a teacher, especially with how to scale up to be able to play a lick or re-using concepts elsewhere! Thanks for the super informative walkthroughs & demonstrations! I'll be watching your channel very closely! Cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment :) I'm not posting much on TH-cam any more, but I am posting weekly lessons for subscribers on my website. You can check it out with the link in the video description. Thanks again, Joe
Thanks. The drums go through a mixing desk and I record the stereo output. They have a little EQ on them and I'm using close mics on the toms/snare/kick and a couple of overheads.
I'm not sure what you're asking. I find when I mount my toms on the bass drum the 2nd one is hard to reach with my left hand. If possible I prefer them to be moved over to the left a bit - either on a rack, or by mounting the 10" off a cymbal stand and the 12" on the arm the 10" usually occupies.
@DAYSINAWEEK Ghost notes are quiet notes. You can utilise the rebound of the drum, but 'bouncing' implies lack of control and they have to be controlled. You need to make sure they're accurately placed bounces ;)
Joe, this is really great. I am a huge Vinnie fan and I think you're doing a fantastic job transcribing his ideas - loved the "don't ask me" fill. Hope to see even more of these videos, they rock. Best regards from Poland
Awesome lesson! I have to admit that this beat sounds a lot better played slower at around 90bpm than it does when you played it at the beginning because you can add more feel to it this way, whereas it sounds more robotic at bpm that exceed 140.
HELLO JOE YOU HAVE VIDEO OR YOU CAN EXPLAIN ABOUT THE ( BEAT DISPLACMENT IN THE HI-HAT-) VINNIE USED A LOT OF TIMES IN THE HI-HAT THANKS ALWAYS FOR YOUR RESPONSE AND GOOD VIBE RAFA F
Thanks again for something really useful! I also must say I love the drumsoud you produce. Can I ask what kind of console or recording platform you are using. Are there some EQ and compression involved as well? I
Joe Crabtree's Drum Lessons Thanks! And whats the name of the desk? Is it a mixer? (Sorry, but I´m looking for a new recording mixer to my home studio)
You're right. I didn't watch the video before I replied to the last comment - I thought it was a different video. It's actually 5 stroke rolls : R llrrL rrll
Wouldn't any kind of paraddidle have notes of equal values (like all 32th)? Here you double only two out of three notes while the first keeps its value. (But yes, phrased a bit differently and equaling out those note value differences you would end up with a five-note paraddidle RLLRR LRRLL)
oh and i have a problem with your vid...the like button doesn't seem to work properly...i keep pressing it over and over but it keeps saying 2 likes ;D

Very nice drumming! Superb sound, too. Clear, friendly, brief and to the point explanations. That says a lot about you. I'm subscribing!

This sticking sounds great just between the ride and highhats with ride bell and open highhat accents too! Thanks for the ideas.

Excellent drumming and very nicely explained thanks for sharing some great tips.
Your drum kit sounds amazing!!
very nice lesson with lots of variables....nice touch ....
just as a start really getting into vinnie all of your recent videos are about him! u legend!
Nicely built presentation. Grats!
@DAYSINAWEEK I always try and place everything. There are very few situations where I'd just let the stick bounce.
A great pleasure to watch and hear. Quality playing, indeed!
Joe Crabtree, You Sir, Are A Gentleman and a Scholar!
Monster lick! I'm stealing this one. Great job!
Great video man. Are the drums recorded separately and mixed themselves? Or is this with your Zoom Q3HD?
Thanks :) Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for breaking it down, Joe!
Thanks for breaking that down! Now I finally understand how to play that lick!!
really nice and smooth

I changed the blog link. It should work now.
@ianhaan yep
Outstanding, especially the "reapplying" part, I believe you've surprised yourself a couple of times as well ;)
Great one! I forgot about this one
btw dont know if you noticed but in the vinnie clip you got this from, he is doing another pattern with the bass drum, talk about being badass
That's very kind of you.
This is mad, still trying to learn it! thanks!
thank you
Vic Firth, Dave Weckl Evolution sticks in this video. Or 5As.
Joe, where can I download totation? Link on your blog does not work. Thank you.
Excellent.
Thank you! I'll Think about it... really interesting!

Hi,
I'm recording through a desk just so I can record a stereo mix to my camera. There's a tiny bit of EQ on the toms. No compression.
Joe Crabtree's Drum Lessons Thanks! And whats the name of the desk? Is it a mixer? (Sorry, but I´m looking for a new recording mixer to my home studio)
are those dave weckl signature sticks?
what sticks do you use?
Yep :)
Joe is that a Brady snare,i own 3 living as I do in Perth West Oz,great lick by the way ! parts of the fill are a 6 stroke roll, would you agree ?
Yep, that's a Brady. The lick is using 5 stroke rolls - R llrrL rrll etc.
Great!
whats the lick at 9:57, the sticking is different.
Dam cool bro. Thanks.
Yep. That's exactly what it is.
brady sheoak block?

:-)
Wicked! Thank you :-)
HOLY CRAP THAT WAS CRAZY
actually reapplying technique to the snare makes for great solo material when stalling for your next move
really nice joe, you should get in a fusion band already and post your stuff in yoututbe hehe
Is there anyone who doesn't feel the hihat as the beat at 1:50? You should have counted before you started there. It's nice concept to use though ;)
5 stroke rolls... R llrrL rrll
oh and i have a problem with your vid...the like button doesn't seem to work properly...i keep pressing it over and over but it keeps saying 2 likes ;D
.... you can also just think of this as a polyrhythmic 5-stroke roll.
Go old 3/4 poly middle tone.
in this video lol
