    I purchased my Jobo CPE2 with lift for $25. Actually I got lucky because at the time, the local camera-shop in my neighborhood was clearing out all of their darkroom stuff in anticipation of the New Digital era. However this was my 3rd Jobo CPE2, having bought 2 other used units from eBay that quickly broke down. Mostly my Jobo sits on the shelf collecting dust, because I rarely shoot film anymore. Once in a while I might shoot a couple of rolls of B&W for nostalgic purposes but even then, I will develop this film by hand.
    The real reason I purchased the Jobo was to develop Color film, since this is a little more time consuming and requires more accuracy than B&W. Since I had this unit(15 years), I can say I only developed a handful of 35mm Color film. The reason is, the process requires a lot of baby-sitting. You have to sit there with a timer and time everything. Sometimes your mind strays, or the phone rings, or someone comes knocking at the door and you are totally screwed.
    I totally agree with what you said, "unless you are developing a lot of film" such as you have a private studio, or you have your own film processing mail order company, you would be better off keeping that $1700-2500 in your pocket, or buy a new camera or something.
    First of all the unit is 95% plastic. The Lift($650) is a total joke and I always worried that the cheap aluminum handle would snap at any time. As a matter of fact, it did on my first 2 units ! I might have only spent $25 for my Jobo CPE2, but I must have spent hundreds on tanks an other accessories.
    I have a couple of cans of Kodak Ektar an Porta in my fridge, but will I be using the Jobo to develop them, HECK NO ! I probably will be sending it out, or have Walmart do it. Come to think about it with $1700 you can process a lot of cans of film. The reason I am keeping my Jobo and not selling it is, that one day I might decide to shoot Medium Format or Large Format, so the Jobo might come in handy. Otherwise I would not recommend anyone buying this unit brand-new and if you buy used you are taking a chance because who knows how old that motor is.

      In any case, for $25 at least you'll have a pretty cool shelf piece or something to talk about.

    With the one litre developing kit, you get to develop 15 (ish) rolls of colour film. Then the developer is exhausted (according to the manufacturer) What I do is bank each colour negative roll until I have 15 to 20 rolls. Then I go out and purchase a C41 kit and have a 'Dev fest' for a couple of days using my Jobo. Comes in handy then :-)

      @@HaiTran The largest error in JOBO processing is too much dilution. It is easy to see how JOBO could lead a new user to think they will save $$$ .This has obviously NOT been an issue with you. I see that you have worked the "Film Unit" designation to your color processing as well. HU-RA!
      The included paperwork with any developer will tell how many square inches can be processed in a package . Film UNITS are a fixed factor. the basic is the 36 exposure 35mm used as the reference.
      For B&W. The basic formula for a "FILM UNIT" is 35mm 36 exposures = 1 roll of 120 = 1/2 roll of 220 = 2 sheets of 4 x 5 . FILM UNITS. A gallon of D76 (single shot) processes (from my deteriorating recollection) , 15 or 16 rolls (film units) of 35mm 36 exposure=16 rolls of 120= 8 rolls of 220 = 32 sheets of 4 x 5 etc. 1 Gallon equates to 8 oz of solution for each film unit that is processed No matter what dilution you use which is a factor for moving the zone areas around With D76, 8 oz is the Absolute must be in the tank to fully process a "film Unit" . 128 oz Finished Chemistry * 16 "FILM UNITS" as stated by the manufacturer. Example D76 is 8 oz for a single film unit. Replenished is another story and I don't do replenishment processing.😏

    Nice video, thank you. I’ve gone digital but your video triggered a flood of pleasant memories. When I graduated from photography school in 1994 I bought a CPE 2. I was in Heaven and was amazed at the capabilities that machine gave me in my own home. I love digital but will always look back with great fondness at the first half of my photography life.

    AN AID TO HOMOGENIZE WATER TEMPERATURE in a JOBO CPE2
    As a JOBO user for at least 12 years a few things have really helped for process quality. I know this is very late. To get the temperature to balance throughout the tank. A small pond pump from Harbor Freight in the far deep right corner under the place where the thermometer would be placed. They have rubber "sucker feet" and circulates the water like crazy. The 2 smallest sizes are more than enough. If the water coming from the faucet is above the temp you wish to process at, just place a bag of ice or one of the commercial ice bags in front of the pump cutlet. That should be facing the front of the tank for best homogenized water. You can also run vinyl tubing around to the main heater coil assembly if you feel it works best in your tank. I can send an image if you need one but it is pretty self defining when you have the pump in your hand. YES THE JOBO IS WORTH IT. I can even take mine on photo road trips with an inverter and group 24 battery and process a lot of film at my camp site . The size is perfect. My HAPPY PLACE IS MY JOBO.

    I got an original CPA and a tank for 160€ so I mainly got it because it was a good deal. Now I'm building my own little dark room because I got some more stuff for free. So free stuff + 160 for a jobo machine makes it worth it for me.

    I bought my Jobo CPE2 with lift in the 90's but ceased tu use it around 2010 that I was getting better color from my DSLR and home pro 8 ink printer than I ever could on C41 and RA4. Sold my whole darkroom in 2019 for a song but just kept the Jobo 1500 tanks for the occasional roll through my Leicas, Nikons and Rolleiflexes.
    I returned to C41 during the "Great Lockup of 2020" the same way I had started, *manually,* but along the way I discovered two things; CineStill Cs41 two bath C41 and a marvelous thing called _SousVide._ I have tanks for 1 to 4 35mm rolls or same number of 120's staggering two per spiral. Color, leaving one blank frame at the start to balance white on film base comes perfect to Adobe Camera Raw.
    Forget the ultraexpensive CPxx! You can get into C41 for under US$200 or less depending on tanks.

    Great video. I had a Jobo for many years. Unless you are developing all the time, like four rolls twice a week, you don't need it. If you do black and white, you don't need it,. If you shoot color negative and don't have a complete color darkroom, you do t need it. If you develop E6 then you need to go with the mammoth Jobo with 6 bottles.

    I hear that. I was thinking about to share cost w/ my friend but still don’t do enough. But it is nice.
    Although I do like the tank system or minimal solution but if rotating, what’s a good cheap option to rotate
    them on if just for b&w sheets & paper?

    I think it is worth it if:
    a) you don't have a local lab
    b) local lab is either quite expensive or isn't as good quality wise or slow
    c) obviously, you've got a cash to spend
    d) you want to experiment (RA4 paper? Sure! Push/pull color film? Cool!)
    e) want to start your own lab
    For me... I want to invest into CPP-3 because of 'b', 'c', 'd' points and maybe 'e' at some point. I like having cool toys to play with and this one is going to give back a lot of fun with all the cameras and films I'm using now and will be using in the future.
    P.S.: no affilation, guys :)

    In the 90s I used to about 5 rolls of 120 every other day or so. I saved a lot of money and time. I lived out in the sticks and so I was easily able to amortize the expense.
    For prints I used a pro lab though. Those dudes new their stuff.

    OMG! 💡💡💡just as your video was ending, an idea pops into my head. Have you heard of sous vide cooking? (Temperature control cooking) Using a sous vide machine to help to keep the consistency of the temperature. It could be an alternative cheaper solutions, as you can get the machine used, for under $50.

    I thought this was for developing paper Ra-4? is it worth it for this reason? I just broke my Thermaphot developing machine, so was looking for an alternative that's affortable, there is one for 650,- euro. seems like a bit much for a heap of plastic with a motor in it, but for color printing i need something.

    I can get a CPE2 for $400 with the lift. I’m thinking about getting it. What do you think?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer: Sure, if you have the money to spend and you won’t regret it, why not?
      Long Answer: It depends on your situation. Can you use that $400 in a better way to advance your photography? Can you use the money to travel somewhere and get more/better photos? What will the Jobo do for you? How often do you develop/shoot film to spend $400 on a machine that doesn't do anything more than what you can do now?

    • @stonemanbytes
      @stonemanbytes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hai Tran good points. Of course I could always use more lenses, film backs, etc. It just seems to me that the convenience of this, especially with the lift, would make processing more enjoyable and less of a task. I’m not a professional but I shoot enough film that developing does become a chore. Does this work equally as well with color and b&w?

    • @HaiTran
      @HaiTran  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the convenience factor is from the perspective of someone on the outside looking in. The "convenience" quickly wore out for me and I got rid of mine pretty quick. I found manually developing much more convenient, but that's just me. If I were to buy another developing machine, I would only buy one that's fully automatic otherwise I'm still attached to the machine doing some work.
      The Jobo does work on black and white, but that depends on the chemicals that you use. Just make sure that the machine's temp range works for the chemicals' temp range.

      Talked them down to $325 and grabbed it. I figured at that price I can’t lose. Got it home and everything checks out, everything is working and everything is included. The only problem is it only came with a sheet drum so I ordered a new drum with spools. Just waiting on that to come in and I’ll see how I like it.

    No any film processors worth for personal use. No matter, Jobo ATL1500 or any other. Much cheaper and faster to develop film rolls at local lab or ship it to best one. Scanning - yes! Better to do it at home, save $$$. I do mostly E6, chemicals too expensive, expiration life so short - cheaper to send it to bigger lab, than do it at home.
