Why Self-Care Matters (Especially for Black Women)

In this video, I share three reasons why I think self-care is especially important for Black women. These ideas come from my own experience as a Black married mom of 3, and my research on Black women's well-being and Black feminist thought.
Oh, I fundamentally disagree with the phrase, "if you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of anyone else" because it attaches your self-care to what you can do for others.

I agree with every thing you have said in the video! I have, unfortunately, (also) seen Black people (particularly Black women) wear themselves to the bone until they are nothing more than a fidgety & irritable mess. I will get back on track with my self care routines to not only re-build a loving relationship with my self but to also be a healthy example for my family. P.S. I think you're exactly right! And when you think about all the pressure society puts on us (Black women) to perform and work ourselves into the ground, it makes sense that we would be irritable and frustrated because OUR needs aren't being met, but we are still expected to take care of others.
