In 2016 the President of Ghana, went around the world calling on the African diaspora to look back home to invest, so we can build a better Africa. The people came with nothing but complains. No American cookies, no burgers, no hot water and while they were complaining, the Chinese, Indians, Lebanese were listening. Now within a couple years, Ghana is filled with foreign businesses from night clubs, shopping Marts with American cookies, hotels etc. and we still complaining, focusing on partying and fornication whiles these foreigners are busy building generational worth. Then we would complain, they own everything on the continent. 😂 My people, let’s wake up. Peace and love♥️✨🙏

The people that are over selling Accra are the ones who came and had the time of their lives. Nobody ever said Accra was heaven on earth, it’s developing and one day it will get there. Ghana invited the diasporas to also gain a share in Ghanas development in its early stages instead of just having Asian, Russian investments. At the end of the day there are negative and positives to every nation and Ghana is no different. We at least created awareness and a gateway for all people to explore Africa, and it’s ok to prefer another African country to Ghana, it’s still of great benefit to the continent. 💯🇬🇭❤️

That’s probably the best way to put it. Every country has its positives and negatives, be open minded and don’t always travel with such high expectations, otherwise you may end up very disappointed. People will have different experiences, good or not so good, depending on where you go.

Kwame Nkrumah (the first president of Ghana) is the first leader in Africa who started calling African Americans to come to Ghana and Africa as whole many years ago. This has been the message of Ghanaian to bridge the gap between African and black people all over the world. Ghana never said you will enjoy facilities like America or Europe. We just said you can call Ghana your home. If America is treated you bad, you can come back home that’s what we said.

These two black Americans don't know what they are saying. If not Ghana many African countries they are mentioning may be still under colonial rule. After gaining independence Ghana used his own money to fight for independence of other African countries. When Guinea decided to separate from France, they sent them ten million pounds, the only African country to send troops to Congo to protect Lumuber when Belgium attacked. Ghana organized freedom fighter both southern and east African countries to fight the British. Before many of these countries got their independence, their leaders were constantly coming to Ghana for military and other training. I saw Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Jomo Kayatta, Samuel Njoma, Nelson Mendala, and Mugabe in Ghana around 1959 and 60s.

Thank you. When we Africans move to the US, you don't hear anyone of us bashing their different states. So many places and States here in the US are in a deplorable state from Alabama to Michigan, Georgia, SC, Missouri, even New York and California. Guys, Its terrible. I live here and I know what I'm talking about. African Americans should not come to Africa to stoke fights about who's developed and who's not. Ignorance is the reason many of them are only DISCOVERING NOW that certain African countries are developed.
The same ignorance that kept them believing Africa is a jungle, is the same same ignorance that still keeps them believing other African countries are not worth settling in. I'm Kenyan but I encourage everyone to consider other places in Africa. For the longest time no one believed our country was developed. That's because we don't brag, show off, undersell or oversell ourselves. Quite frankly the African countries that people think are under developed are the best places to move to. The island nations are also part of Africa. They are great tourist destinations. AAs, please consider vacationing there instead of Europe, Canada and the US. We must promote every African country as a tourist destination.

I'll argue that Kenya was never even sold to black Americans to begin with. It's only in the last few years of more TH-cam videos coming to the fore about the place that has pushed it up the "To Go " list. Ghana had a huge headstart with major black superstars paving the way and overselling it as a destination because they were courted by the government of the day to do it. There’s not enough infrastructure to live there coming from a first world country. Those in power have to sit back and build for the advancement of the nation instead of just wanting to build their own personal wealth. Kwame Nkrumah is the one who set those precedents for African Americans to have Ghana as an option to call home because he wanted them to be a part of the potential united African nations. Sadly, those after him never felt quite as strongly about that vision altogether

Ghana wasn’t oversold, they simply welcomed their fellow brothers and sisters back, however a lot of them went there with preconceived notions and some entitlement, expecting to get preferential treatment. Is anybody forcing you to relocate to Ghana? A lot of Ghanians have left the country and have their offsprings elsewhere. Was the year of return geared towards the children of Ghanaians living abroad to come home or for other children with different nationalities. Some African-Americans love it when they find themselves there and even if they find any flaws just like any other country, they roll their sleeves and go to work and eventually they find a place to call their homes. Sir, why don't you remain in your land of milk and honey?

Brilliant share, as a Kenyan in the diaspora, I think living in Africa is harder than migrating there. After the initial excitement, once you start to live and do things as a local(that you`re supposed to anyway) you realize how complicated things really are.
I think comparing African nations before deciding to settle in one African nation or the other is not even the right way to go about it, there is a saying you can not compare your auntie's house to your Uncles house because nomatter how close they are, they are two very different houses and it`s the same with most African nations. My two cents.

I keep seeing this lack of understanding of the many reasons many African Americans and diasporans choose Ghana, especially by Kenyans and South Africans. It’s not about tall buildings and infrastructure. If that’s the case, none would go to The Gambia. Yet many African Americans went to The Gambia. Ghana is still more urban than Kenya.
African Americans are building many homes in small towns and villages in Ghana and it has nothing to do with infrastructure or tall buildings. Some are even developing subdivisions in small towns that’s self sustaining. No outside water or electricity!
So no, Ghana was never oversold to African Americans and diasporans. It is their home. Nobody oversells your home to you…that’s ridiculous.

Ghana is nowhere comparable to Kenya as far as urbanization is concerned. Mombasa is even better than Accra. Kisumu Obliterates Kumasi hands down. Nairobi is just way out of Ghana's league 😂. That's an international city, it's bigger too.
The general infrastructure in Kenya & even the geography is much better. Kenya is also a bigger country with a bigger population than Ghana. What Ghana beats Kenya in is culture & having a more compact population demography. The food is also better in Ghana & their currency is very strong.

Ghana has been calling African Americans to come to Ghana and Africa as a whole since Kwame Nkrumah (the first president) time. Most prominent African Americans has been to Ghana, Mohammed Ali, Malcolm X, Steve Wonder, Louis Farrakhan, Obama, Steve Harvey and more. We Ghanaians believe we have to bridge the Gap between Blacks everywhere in the world. We never preach that we have the best infrastructure in Africa. We never said you will have everything in your fingertips. We are still developing. But we boast that we have the most friendly people on earth and when your in Ghana you feel more safer than many African countries. Just using one city to judge the whole of Ghana seems very unfair.

Interesting discussion. Thanks for the video. A few reactions: Kenya is not undersold. There is a difference between not knowing a country, which is a personal issue, and objectively saying it has been undersold. Some people may not know this but Kenya has been one of Africa’s leading tourist destinations for decades due to safaris and the white sand beaches. Visitors are not new to the country especially from Europe, which is one continent that knows Africa’s beauty due its oppressive colonization of the continent (people don’t try to hang on to a place they don’t think has value). Its robust tourism industry is not based on a recent event, campaign or on social media but has organically developed through public and private investment that has grown over time.
There is also nothing wrong with what Ghana is doing. It, like other West African countries, has a strong cultural and pan-African tie to the diaspora in the Americas due to the transatlantic slave trade.
Now, tourism, while good in terms of bringing in money and increasing cross cultural exchange, also has its downsides for a local population, especially when the country is developing and a government has to not only pay attention to tourists but always prioritize your citizens.
Ghana and Kenya are both beautiful African nations for different reasons. Let’s keep climbing and learning from each other.
Travel is one of the greatest gifts in life and I wish everyone could see the world. All the best, Auston!

In Kenya for example a typical 24 year old female is a university educated independent woman. Besides property inherited from her family, she has a sustainable income, owns land, apartments, or runs her own businesses. What does a western man roving the world to find a non western woman bring to the table? Obviously a divorced person has child support obligations etc. Western men, if you are coming to Africa with an 18th century mindset, you're in for a rude awakening. I'm not Ghanaian but you have to understand that each African country will be different when you visit. I don't think Ghana ever claimed to be the best country in Africa for Black Americans. African countries are not perfect and you cannot compare them to developed countries of Europe or Asia. I have to pitch in that that the Ghanaian president's statements around the year of return sounded more like 'begging or come rescue us' rather than 'come and reconnect with your roots......' but I'm very sure that he never claimed Ghana to be an UTOPIA for Black Americans. What I'm trying to say is you may have an amazingly good time in Zimbabwe, and then have a fantastic experience in Ivory Coast depending on how one adjusts oneself.

However, there's more to West Africa than just Ghana. Abidjan and Lagos provide more of a vibe than Accra. The countries of Sao Tome e Principe, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Togo, Senegal, even Nigeria are gems for blacks to explore and check out.
Central Africa is another region most blacks haven't but should seek out. Congo, Angola, Cameroon and Gabon. Kinshasa from DRC itself is a vibrant city.
As a whole, East Africa and South Africa's infrastructure is more developed and advanced.

Yes, Ghana was sold to African Americans, but not over-sold. People still don't get it. The 2019 campaign was a combination of Tourism and genuine stretch of hand to long lost brethren. Ghana has never been a prime tourist destination. Kenya was. But Kenya was, Kenya is, and Kenya will always be a prime "white" tourist destination. What Ghana offers is misunderstood. A combination of tourism, spirituality, culture and warmth and black pride. If what, Black Americans need are sky scrapers and safari, they could as well stay in New York City and visit Grand Canyon.
If you want your future children to go through what you are going through in America. Like finding yourself to be the only black among Indians, Arabs and Chinese, in planes, prime restaurants and hotels, then, East Africa is the place for you. When you go to a prime hotel or restaurant, look around. What is that different from a New York restaurant. Is that what you want for your offspring.? Ghana offers more than your eyes can see. The peace and tranquility in Ghana is nothing you can put a price on. Accra is a true BLACK metropolis, unlike other places.
People should stop comparing Ghana to other countries. They are free to promote wherever they want to promote. But can they just leave Ghana alone? The last time we took the lead( Independence struggle), it did not go well for us. Now, here we go again?

I like to correct Austin on one major point, that point is that African Americans or if you chooses to call them black Americans simply came from west Africa, i don't have issues with any black American who feels to travel around other African countries, but the real point is this, if African Americans wanted to real reconnect with their real roots, west Africa is the right place, not east Africa or anywhere else but am not against wherever any African American chooses to travel to, that's their choices, but if the purpose of any black American is reconnecting with his or her root, it's west Africa, if you choices to go elsewhere in African to settle, we west Africans are not against it, we wish whosoever make such decisions all the love and respect. But if it's connecting with your roots, west Africa is the right place.

Firstly blacks in the diaspora is not only west African ancestry, but huge percent came from central africa from Angola/Congo to zambia and possibly north Namibia and minority came from coast of Mozambique and Madagascar. Second he is entitled to his opinion and everyone has one, period!

@@justcallmebrian793 you are completely not getting my points, the topic is not black diaspora, but black Americans, majorities of black Americans have their DNA shown to be from west Africa, only a handful of them that could have their DNA shown to be from central Africa like Cameroon, and other countries in central Africa, but majorities is basically from west Africa and let me tell, during the slaves trades, Africans that was taken from Eastern Africa was basically taken to the Arab world, some Persians countries as while the Portuguese, Spanish took most of their slaves from central Africa and parts of Western African countries
