- Using a laptop with a fairly common Core 2 Duo CPU, in this video I test how much an upgrade of an SSD and more RAM will actually affect an old or slow system.

I have a hp pavilion 15cs model, i5 8265u mx250 8gb ram. Ive had ot for 5 years and only last week replaced thermal paste for first time. Put a stronger fan on it + i now have 2x 8gb sticks, 2666mhz. And i can tell you its a HUGE improvement. My laptop was throttling hard at 2.6ghz on most games getting to 90c at worse. Now my clock is up to 3.6 steady and believe it or not i can actually run cuberpunk on 720p low settings. The extra 8gb ram deff helped!

Nice video ive upgraded my old 9 year old Acer aspire 7750g from 2011 from 4 to 16 gigs and slapped in a cheap Kingston SSD in it I may have went a little overboard with the ram but it surely did make the laptop feel way more snappy and responsive
Just a curious question, How many times had you replaced the battery/ had issues w.r.t battery? (was it for your primary use and how the battery aged?)Cause I am thinking of upgrading my 3 year old macine, but sceptical if it will really survive for the next 3-4 year without any battery issues.

Nic vid. Planning to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv3500 from 2009. Had sweet memories with it so it ll stay with me. Will upgrade ram, hard drive, broken screen and cpu. Saw a video upgrading cpu too lol🤪
I just added RAM to my Toshiba Satellite from 2009. Brought it up to 6GB from 3GB. No change in performance. It switched between apps quickly to begin with. Laptop starts quickly but loads apps slowly and using File Manager takes forever. 3GB was plenty. SSD would help but not adding RAM.
@@wsbill14224 Yeah, adding more RAM helps only if your RAM is full and the processor has to use the swap. Otherwise, having 4 or 32 Go RAM should be exactly the same if you only need 2 go of RAM
I added 8gb ram and noticed barely no improvement in speed. Once i swapped the HDD to SSD and cloned everything, speed is at least 5x quicker, id say it feels more like 10x though
Increasing ram only prevents it from "slowing down" under heavy load. But that would also depend on the processor.

I have that very laptop with me right now, and you are lucky to receive it with a Core 2 duo T9300, the 2nd best CPU ever supported on that laptop! If you end up with a crappy T5x00 or T7250 processor then you need a better CPU as well to see the differences as big!
Moreover, since your RAM is also used as video RAM, having dual channel also means faster integrated graphics, which is helpful since after all the upgrades your iGPU is the bottleneck anyway.
FYI the max RAM supported is 8GB, and I have that right now, though with the high price of 4GB DDR2 sticks I think 6GB is more justifiable in the cost

I think that the the limit of RAM is 32 GB
The CPU can stress pretty fast, it depends on how fast the computer is. Faster computers can run even 30 web pages at once.
I don't know about the third question, but I think that it's good.

@@handcuppo569 Maybe less than 10-20...I have one but I didn't try it yet. Considering how much lag that old processor has, it's impossible to run more than 10 pages at once

@The Trashman i recently got an acer 514-52 and just upped the ram from 8 to 20gb (4 is soldered in). and there was a spare slot for a tb SSD :D

I think it's a little faster. i'm gonna use it for music production moreso than gaming. i just need to sort the windows input latency issue and i'm away! most of my software licenses are set up and it feels a bit sacreligious to put games on it. i'm still gonna give the old total war games a play on it though to see how it runs. the screen isn't amazing, but i have a monitor for movies etc

Because some processors like the AMD support dual channel RAM.
Which means that you'll have similar or better performance if you two similar RAM sticks, compared to RAM sticks with varying capacity.
You're 20gb ram isn't necessarily Bad, but you might have gotten same performance if you had another 4gb Stick along with the soldered 4gb Stick.

I have windows 11 on 5400rpm segate and it's boot time hardly passes 30 sec startup due to big cache
I’ve got an Inspiron 2500 laptop, picked it up for 10 dollars. It was slow when I got it and barely loaded up. Got rid of most all unnecessary processes and startups and pretty much optimized the software as much as possible and I’m pretty pleased with its capabilities considering its age (2001) it’s a pentium 3 900 hertz 256 ram. The last thing I wanted to try with it is to optimize the hardware without spending an unjustifiable amount on an outdated pc. Most likely getting some ram upgrades because they are fairly cheap. Considering a solid state drive but don’t want to spend much. Currently it can pull up most websites except sites with streaming videos like TH-cam or twitch. I got TH-cam up 1 time but it took 5 minutes just to play 5 seconds of video with very bad quality. 1. Do you think a solid state drive could be the answer to getting TH-cam to work at a somewhat tolerable rate? 2. Also if my ram hardware was maxed out (which 512mb apparently is the max according to manufacturer) could I somehow allocate more virtual ram from the ssd drive and compensate for any lack of power? 3. Also wondering if a graphics card helps at all with processors workload/speed or is it strictly beneficial for rendering video games. 4. Was reading about using more ram than max and there’s a few opinions that using more than max can sometimes register and work but most others say that the additional ram is just wasted, do you have an opinion or guess which is true or any experience with using more than max ram?
You should be upgrading to the cpu to that maxed 1ghz p3. An SSD does help depends tho but don't expect much from a old computer it is just a inspiron 2500
And if you want to allocate more ram then get a USB stick ssd will not be the best as it is limited in write speed

@@judenorbz500 yeah I have other laptops, just got this cheap one, it’s fun to install old games on, everything PlayStation 1 and older plays well on it. Got some movies tv shows and can surf the internet except for TH-cam, I did find a site that shrinks down TH-cam that would have worked for this computer great but support for it ended a couple months ago. Could also install Linux that has several new but lightweight operating systems to choose from.

Normally around 20 pounds minimum for 4gb ram ddr3, you will need to check what available slots u have for Ur model tho as that may completely change what u can buy

The idea of more ram may help when you have a slow computer utilizing swap memory (very slow) by avoiding the swap it’ll be much faster.
SSD I think can help almost every computer, the speed of the data accessed from RAM to CPU and from HDD to CPU can be very very fast, even with a old machine. The hard drive is a huge bottleneck as the transfer rates between the rest of the hardware is super fast, beyond that of the read speeds of HDD

If you have sufficient ram that you are not using “swap” or “page file” then I would recommend only SSD upgrade. Doing both SSD and adding more ram would definitely help regardless

Upgrading ram is useless and it’s kinda sad that the go to answer people say when someone asks how to improve pc speed is “get more ram”, anybody who says to get more ram knows nothing about computers, ssds are life changing.
