      Mohammed Zayed RLY? How do you plan on installing Windows via USB then? It's gonna boot into SSD and just stay there, BIOS order should always, at least IMO be that USB's and Discs should boot first. It makes no sense to have your storage boot first. Yes, gives you 2 seconds faster boot but it's not going to make a difference.

    • @grahamhurst6212
      @grahamhurst6212 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For such a well-versed expert, not having the boot order with the drive first is a Massive n00b cock-up, it would probably boot in under 10 seconds. It also make me wonder how much faster the 1 1/2 minutes boot time with the old hard drive would have reduced. Naughty Jayz lol

    Hey Jay,
    Why don't you have any tutorial videos about post- build. For example, updating BIOS, testing components, changing Memory speed, installing drives / Windows, adding additional HHD / SSD, configurating the system......stuff like that.
    I have found very few videos about this stuff, its usually all about building the PC and the video ends once the power is switched on.
    You're always asking for suggestions on videos to make- I think these would be great as the topics are seldom covered in detail and it would help first time builders, thanks.

    I think it may be interesting to show a full laptop upgrade path. That is, show how you can upgrade your RAM, processor, hard drive, as well as cleaning the fan, replacing the thermal paste on both the GPU and CPU in a laptop. I find that a lot of folks do not know that they can upgrade all of these things and buy the components second-hand via eBay and Newegg and give their laptop a new lease on life.
    As a further suggestion, show folks how to use the Intel "Product Specifications" tool to teach people how to find their CPU socket type, TDP and then how to locate the highest-spec CPU which will fit with their laptop (and its acceptable power limit). The Intel tool can also be used to figure out if their laptop is using a soldiered CPU or one which can be replaced.
    Here is a good example:
    A Dell laptop my friend had was showing its age -- had an old Intel Core i3-2310M processor from 2011:
    ark.intel.com/products/52220/-
    Using that information, I was able to query all CPUs this machine could support and got a cheap second-hand Intel Core i7-2640M processor:
    ark.intel.com/Search/FeatureFilter?productType=processors&MaxTDPMax=35&SocketsSupported=PPGA988
    Maybe show your viewers on how to use CPU-Z to read the RAM specification and how to find their motherboard manual/specification and upgrade the RAM via Newegg, etc.
    I used this method to bump the laptop memory from 4GB to 16GB and the laptop had a new lease on life!

      I've had a pre-built in 2008 PC since 2010 with core2 duo E8200 (2.67ghz) 32-bit - yes, 32bit.. - architecture, maxed 4gb ddr3 ram (plus an external Radeon HD 3600). Honestly it works like a charm, but I noticed the difference when I installed an SSD on it. I was amazed at how much faster Windows 7 Ultimate fully booted. It went from 5 mins boot time with only Microsoft services on, to 40 seconds with everything enabled. Buy SSDs freely guys it will save your lives! And they're way cheaper now too!

(another relative had a am3+ motherboard left over that overclocks well but doesnt unlock cpu cores (sits stable at 3.4 ghz atm with a amd phenom cooler for now.)
      (1x8 gb 1600 mhz with that motherboard & 3x2 gb 1333 he got from me.)

      @alexvar10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, I feel we've gone backwards. Now most modern laptops won't even allow you to open them, or at least, get to their internal components without disassembling everything (Mainly due to the increasing trend of making 'unibody' devices, and for marketing reasons: Non-serviceable devices means buying a new one if something goes bad or paying a huge amount of money to send it to an official repairing station OR trying to repair it by yourself, voiding the warranty). On the other hand, I've got a 2000 Compaq laptop that requires just two screws to access the HD, and another two to access the RAM. Oh, you can even swap out the CD and floppy drives if they go bad, or if you just want to put other interfaces instead! In my case, I've got a laptop, which is from 2016, that requires just 6 screws to get inside, but I don't want to risk voiding the warranty...
      EDIT: By chance, was your 1999 laptop an iBook? Because those darned things were near-impossible to service. Swapping just the hard drive required you yo disassemble the entire laptop. No joke.

    I sure could with my laptops and desktop and even when I added a dedicated Ethernet card, during boot I could press a key to access the settings of the card and tell it to stfu for faster boot.

    Excellent tip on SSD. I had a problem like this with my AMD rig, FX 8300 with GeForce 1050 3gb, Manjaro OS. This issues I had were slow load times for programs games etc, cpu heat of 80 degrees while playing games, frame rate lagginess, I check the company that sold me the computer and they advise to upgrade cooler to Cooler Master 212, graphics to 1080gb and a new 650 psu for a small sum of £700!!! As I didn’t have that I solved my issues by putting in an 250gb SSD boot drive from which I load my games from, and a Cooler Master 212 then I swapped my kernel form 4.14 to 4.18. All in all the net result was a boot time of 2 seconds. A temp of no more than 55 degrees while playing games, snappier load times for all programmes and frame rates are a more consistent with no lagginess and with a cost of £68.

    I always go with the work desk analogy to describe hardware to people.
    RAM = How big your desk is (how much will fit on it at one time)
    Storage = Drawers under the desk for storing things
    CPU = How many hands can work on the desk and how fast they can move

    You know, an even easier way to make an old computer run faster is just to install Linux on it. I've heard it has great compatibility with older hardware. I recommend Mint for a first time user as it provides a familiar aesthetic to go with the inherent ease of use and intuitiveness of Linux in general.

    • @boburosu1956

      3rd to 4th comment replying to stop reccomending linux. The people using it don;t know what linux really is, and don't want to learn how to use it. If you were to go linux with people like that recommend ChromeOS, it's linux at its base, but less complicated.

      Just because you think Linux is better doesn't meant people knows how to or want to use it, unless it's an Android distro

    • @ez4pz
      @ez4pz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Linux, Mint especially, is a lot more intuitive than you think. There's one place to change settings, as opposed to Windows where 3/4 of the functionality is still only accessible via the W7 Control Panel. You have one Root user who is able to do anything, as opposed to Windows with a seemingly half done administration system where anyone that isn't an Admin can barely sneeze without being asked for a password. And even Admins aren't able to modify everything.
      Linux was made to be lightweight, customizable, secure, and intuitive. People just need to get used to it a little. It's a new thing!
      And Linux just got even better with the introduction of Steam Play which allows ALL Windows games to be run on Linux with the click of the "Install" button!
