    I think aside from them coming from the same scene, Black Midi and Black Country, New Road both make music that's very obviously (even on first listen) incredibly technically impressive music, but their songwriting and vocals can be more of an acquired taste.
    Black Midi definitely took me longer to get into though, largely because Isaac writes and sings in a very emotionally bare way that's easier to connect with, whereas here Geordie is largely goofing off, crooning and doing goofy voices. Highly recommend watching their KEXP performance, one of the best performances I've ever seen. And I agree, Morgan Simpson (the drummer) is absolutely astounding, probably the member I end up paying the most attention to.
    Oh yeah and please do Car Seat Headrest's Twin Fantasy, you'd love that!

    • @chrilborn4138

    • @letthebeatr0ck
      @letthebeatr0ck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Geordie definitely has a lot of fun and goes into different characters but I wouldn’t write it off as just goofing off. It’s obviously REALLY different from Isaac’s style, but I find there’s a lot of charm in Geordie’s storytelling and weird worlds that are unique for every song. At least on this album, Schlagenheim is more just fucking around lol

    Listen to Squid as well. I saw them live late last year and they're honestly maybe the best live act I've ever seen (up there with Muse live although different type of music). Saw Black Midi live as well but Squid clinched it for me. I'd recommend starting with their Town Center EP though. They've been compared a little bit to LCD Soundsystem but a lot more punk energy and more energetic. Arguably my favourite of the BCNR, Black Midi, Squid post punk British trinity at the moment just cause of their dancability although really depends on my mood which of them I prefer.

    It might be hard to grasp having only heard Cavalcade, but its actually way more understated and jazzy than their other album Schlagenheim, which is way more noisy math rock and in your face, and personally, having heard Schlagenheim you develop a better fondness for the singer than on Cavalcade- Listening to each of them compliments the other!
    Obviously i think that should be the next reaction then, because it would pair really well with this video :)

  • @Alex99876
    @Alex99876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Don't feel bad for not emotionally connecting with the songs like you do with BCNR, I don't even know if its possible for anyone to connect more emotionally with Black Midi than BCNR purely down to their mode of operation, lyrical content and delivery. (People can certainly prefer BM but that's besides my point.) BM can sure as hell make you feel just as strongly in a sense of phwwaaa, this is really good, this is beautifully composed and arranged and technically mind blowing and intense but I don't think it's designed to scratch that same traditionally 'emotional' itch. It's like the difference between Radiohead and Meshugga. So don't feel like you're missing out and maybe don't wait to 'unlock' the emotion behind the songs because i'm not sure it will ever come. One thing I would say black midi do unbelievably well when it comes to their lyrics is their ability to portray vivid imagery. I don't think i've ever imagined a more crazy, unique or vivid scene than the one in John L. But anyway, this 'being taken away somewhere' sensation you touch upon in the video, that's the sensation I would continue to delve into, as well as unpacking all the instrumental layers and unpacking any sense you can from the chaos across each listen.
    To continue down this rabbit hole you've got to listen to Black Midi's first album Schlagenheim or Squids Bright Green Fields next.
    I also think you would really enjoy ...Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stoneage if you fancy a change of pace for a bit.

    I know everyone’s already said it but listen to the debut black midi album if you can, it’s as good as this one in my opinion and also squid is a must listen if you are enjoying this so far. I’d start with the ‘town and centre’ ep

    I think Squid's debut Bright Green Field would be a great next album to check out. It continues with the same meld of post-punk and experimental rock with their own unique spin. In my eyes it was one of 2021's best albums and better than both Cavalcade and For the First Time.

    Just watched your reactions to 'For The First Time' and 'Cavalcade', they're quite cool! These two albums were a lifesaver for me in 2021. It's 2023, and I still can't get enough of them.
    I think listening to King Crimson, Don Caballero and Godspeed You! Black Emperor prepares you to listen to this beautiful gem by black midi.
    If you're reacting to these stunning albums by black midi and Black Country, New Road, I think you outta react to a masterpiece that paved the way for this trend 10 years before.
    I'm meaning 'Hidden', the other wordly sophomore album by These New Puritans that took art rock to another level.

    I'd love to see you become acquainted with Richard Dawson and I think his album "2020" would be the best place to start. Incredible storytelling songwriter, creating modern fables with his extraordinary voice and unique playing style. Once heard, never forgotten.

    Here we go. Schlagenheim needs to happen now - probably would've been better to go Schlagenheim into Cavalcade but I'm not complaining. As for suggestion, let's just go with a real heavy hitter off rip: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯ A♯ ∞ , the debut rom '97, followed by Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven from 2000. Two masterpiece albums back to back, honestly two of the greatest musical expressions of the last 50 years. They came out the gates fully-formed.

    Would love to see you check out their debut Schlagenheim, absolutely insane record. Bright Green Field by Squid is also a worthy album to checkout as well. However my pick would have to be Swans. Definitely a more experimental band, who have existed since the 80's, but have gone through multiple member lineups and soundscapes. The trilogy of The Seer, To Be Kind, and The Glowing Man, is one of the most insane music listening experiences I've ever had. Heartily recommend, only if you can stomach the 2 hour album lengths.

    Okay I've been really enjoying this channel and your patreon. Once you've reacted to all these post-punk bands which are really trending rn, there is one band, one album you have to tackle as the final boss battle of rock music imo. Swans - To Be Kind. One of the highest rated albums of all time and easily my favorite album. This is imo the peak of music.

    It would be a great idea to dive into Black Midi's first album Schlagenheim now that you've heard this. It is much more stripped back and aggressive but still just as impactful IMO.
    They also have a new album called Hellfire that is releasing on July 15 which will be a great reaction I'm sure.
    EDIT: I would also love to see some classic rock reactions like Aja by Steely Dan or Remain In Light by Talking Heads if you've yet to hear them.

    you gotta check out "Slint". They're a band that both black midi and black country took heavy insparation from, they have 1 album called spiderland(they mightve had 1 older album aswell, but spiderland is their big piece.) highly reccomend, a lot of cool sounds, very unique. It explores a lot of dark and eerie sounding chords, kinda like the first black country album
