Thanks for the video. It helped me see how to take the front cover off my 6200. There were no screws holding it on though. When I took the cover off it was much simpler than yours. The pcb was much smaller and the battery was uncovered. Just needed to unhook the battery, pull it out (it’s held in place with double sided sticky tape - how Blue Peter!), connect the new one, new piece of tape to hold it in place and clip back the front cover. Wonderful.
I've just started doing repair cafe here in Cardiff, it's a great idea, and for 3 hours of my time once a month it saves loads of stuff going to landfill. Couldn't fix a massive dewalt radio last weekend though, got it to power up which was more than it did when the chap brought it in. Fixed loads of lamps though! Keep up the good work!
Wonderful to hear about your work at a 'repair cafe'. There is a wonderful one in Copenhagen, very popular, and very social. 'Fixing', and avoiding 'wasting' is a profound benefit to us all. Bravo you.
It's a worthy endeavour, and many items have been saved from the scrap-heap with a little attention! Even if we can't fix something, some people just want to know they tried all they could before having to write-off an item.
I do a lot of repairs, I also agree that people should be trying to fix things, I really dislike the incredibly wasteful throwaway society the world is becoming
I used to like messing about with electronics, but these days components are so small and include customised chipsets that makes it difficult for Joe Average to diagnose and repair. There are plenty of household items that can be saved from the scrapheap for the sake of a new plug/lead/battery etc. if someone is willing to give it a go. I regret not learning electronics in my college days and being able to get right into the guts of things like you do.
Thanks for your video. Your new battery is meant for the GO6100 GPS. I have just replaced the exact same battery in my GO6100 for the same reason as you replaced yours. I suspect the five pin connector is provided to facilitate balanced charging of multiple cells in that lithium pack. My old battery is approx five years old so it’s done well. As excess heat is a known lithium battery killer, I intend to put a homemade sunshade behind the GPS in my car to see if that increases the life of the new battery at all. It looks like TomTom have virtually dropped out of the navigator industry here in NZ, which is a pity as their devices are some of the best on the market. I will be trying to keep mine going as long as possible.
Thanks for the info. Two years on and the TomTom is still working on this replacement battery. Most commenters seem to think I'm mad not using my phone and Google Maps, but I like the dedicated SatNav always being there in the van and always being ready to go.
Driving to a petrol station! I remember doing that, also back in the day i regularly drove to train stations to look at the map they have on the wall. Also they have taxi's there so if the wall map fails you then you can ask them.
Another good place to ask is a pizza places or anywhere that delivers. Although I've never repeated what my parents did asking for McDonald's in a Burger King or vice versa.
F.Y.I the sat nav inside the van can be updated even if its fixed into the dash, you use a usb -- there should be a port inside the vehicle to plug it into, i had a Toyota Auris you got the code off the unit display then went online to download the maps using the code number. then plug the usb into the vehicle using the menu buttons.
Yeah, mine is always connected, the battery kicks in when the ignition is off and puts it in a low power standby mode. I guess it gets a lot of cycling which isn't good for it.
A good point, and it's also cycled a lot. It gets short charges per journey, then is powered by the battery in standby mode until the next time. Three years is probably quite good considering the temperature extremes and the way it is used.
On the Tomtom 6200 with wifi you can change the battery without having tot turn a single screw. Just take of the front screen as shown, pull the battery connector loose. Change the battery. Plug in the connector of the new battery. Click the front in place. Few minutes work no tool needed other then to loosen and take of the front.
Good old great-big-fuckoff road atlas'. Think there is still one knocking round the boot of the car from like 2004 lol. The extra wires are probably for measuring the battery voltage without the voltage drop caused by the leads when under load.
Totally agree about how Sat Navs and phones have now come so far and you take it all for granted. I remember going to see mates an Uni in the early 2000s and heading from Surrey to Nottingham and having to print the directions of the AA website and when a Phone was for calling and texting. Then as you say Sat Navs and IPhones came long and you’d never drive that way now. I use my phone with Waze and basically totally rely on it and use it to stream the radio to the van as I don’t have a DAB and WhatsApp is used for everything...my phone has a breakdown the other week and wouldn’t reboot (I’d probably filled it with far too much porn to be honest) and I was lost...no emails, drawings for jobs, Radio or Sat Nav as it was all ok my phone! Worryingly it showed how easily we become a slave to technology and are lost without it when we take it for granted and rely on it too much! I quite agree Jay, it's so easy to become reliant on this Star Trek technology in one's pocket! I don't have DAB either, so we tend to stream radio in the van as we otherwise only pick up Heart, Capital or Free Radio which are all interchangeable in terms of kiddie music, inane presenters and too many adverts, or we have Radio1 which serves black teenagers in London or Radio2 which is presented by an array of massive wankers. We used to listen to 6Music, but that also went down the wank presenter route. Sorry, I'm venting here.

That little Garmin was the first satnav I had too. Worked well but it seemed to take ages to pick up the satellite signal when started up for the first time of the day.
I found the same Paul, it would take forever and then ask me to confirm the date and that I was outside before searching for satellites again! By the time it figured out where it was, I'd be pulling into my destination!
My Garmin battery is also very poor, same goes for my dashcam battery. Seems to be in car devices that have crap batteries. FWIW my fairly cheap Garmin gets traffic updates using the charging cable as a radio antenna, seems to work very well.
Ahhh the little Garmin i3. Sold hundreds when I worked for motor world. The little wheel to turn and select on the menu's. Without the AA's it'd would run off a 12v charger. Once had a whole batch arrive set to Portuguese which was interesting.

Its a battery that is suitable for multiple models. You could have just plugged it in. The model of sat-nav you have has power connections on certain pins, other models have the power connections on other pins.
@@user-sg1ku5hu5d Dammit, now I've had to open it again to take a look! I can confirm that the connector on the PCB will only accept the three-pin plug. For the five-pin to fit, the sides of the connector would have to be cut out which would be fiddly.

If anyone else did this video, I wouldn't bother. I like to try to fix things whenever possible, mainly to save waiting around for delivery of replacement parts. My dad's mobility scooter died last week, I strangely like to get the soldering iron out and fixing the frayed wire connected to the 'ignition'. Nicely done sir, and haha, nice grey box in top right, may be do a gentle tear down! 👍

Hi David, Firstly, thanks for the videos you produce. I enjoy watching them and also, have learnt some very invaluable knowledge from some of the content you produce! I am currently sitting in my living room with my 18th ed book out just looking over stuff I don't use much, just having a bit of a brain workout. And it got me thinking about something I have often pondered without really getting to the bottom of. Electric shocks. We are all (hopefully) aware that a circuit needs to be complete for electric to flow. That being said, when touching a line conductor, there must be a path to E or N for you to get a shock. So, scenario, I am standing in my living room, I have a rubber underlay, followed by carpet. I am wearing socks and sports trainers with an average foam sole. If I touch a line cable, and nothing else, do I get a shock. I assume I would, but where is the path to earth. If I take a multimeter clamp on to the earth bar at the cu and hold the other probe, I'm getting no continuity to earth, so technically I'm not completing the circuit. Please put this to bed for me, as it bugs the hell out of me. I've not yet dropped the light fitting in my living room to try. But I will!
Hi Mitch. We have two things to bear in mind. Firstly, there's ElectroMotive Force (EMF). You get no reading out of your Ohmmeter between your body and the earth bar because it's a dead test and the voltage put out by the meter is too puny to overcome the high impedance of your body. If your Ohmmeter had a higher scale and put out a larger voltage, then you might get a reading. Similarly, on a hot and humid day where you're sweating and the air around you has a higher moisture content, then your impedance would be lower and you may get a reading. Just because something reads as having no continuity when dead can all change when you ramp up the EMF. In my nuisance glow video I showed my Billy Bollocks IR demonstrator which showed an open circuit on a resistance dead-test, but with the tester whacked up to 250V on the IR function the EMF of that voltage was able to cross from one cable into another by jumping the air gaps in the broken insulation that the screw had chewed through. If we go back to your standing on an insulating surface (your carpet, trainers etc.), then an Ohmmeter will show no continuity between you and the physical earth of course. If we introduce an EMF, 230V AC, then have you grab a live wire, although there isn't a perfect resistive path to earth, some current may still flow because the EMF is enough to break down the insulation of the materials between you and earth depending on what those materials are. That path to ground may be via an air gap if that offers a path of lesser resistance than the insulator you're standing on. There is no such thing as a perfect insulator, and any material will break down the more EMF is applied. You have to also remember that when we're talking about current flow through such materials, it can be a tiny amount - microAmps or milliAmps. It's not an effective circuit, we can't use it as 'practical' current to power the TV by connecting the appliance to line and dropping neutral onto the carpet, but the more EMF, the more leakage current can potentially flow through your insulating materials. Secondly, there's capacitance which was the subject of two previous videos. The earth is a conductor, your shoes and socks are an insulator and your body is another conductor; these are the component parts of a capacitor. A current can leak across the insulator via the electric field which develops across it when your body becomes live relative to the earth. Whichever way, it doesn't take much current to cause shock injury or death which is why RCD's trip at a maximum of just 30mA. If you were stood on a rubber mat, then the high insulating and dielectric properties of rubber would mean a stronger EMF or electric field is required to overcome it, so standing on such may be enough to 'island' you from Earth.
I've got the same model. I use a mobile WiFi hotspot that I put in the van. Works a treat, but I have to do any updates on my home WiFi as it only a small data plan...
Mine works with Bluetooth tethering, but my phone has a bloody annoying habit of turning that off. I usually have some palaver of having to switch it into flight mode and back out to reset Bluetooth to get the damn things talking to each other. I don't need it every day, but I guarantee it will be playing up when I do!

It's a complete lottery whether my phone will connect to either the van stereo or the sat-nav when I fire up the ignition, yet the phone always *always* connects to my Amazon Echo when I'm at home even though I only want it to do so when I'm playing music. I disconnect it, and it just goes off and reconnects again later.

You can turn the unit off and thereby making charging quicker. Just hold the "On/Off" button pressed for a few seconds and follow the instructions --at least you can with the "TomTom GoBasic".
I just shop around a little. Can't even remember who I'm with at present. A few have been posting videos recommending Rhino so I'll give them a look when renewing.
Mind you, I can't say I miss the old map book days. Having to pull over, find where you were, memorise which turnings you were supposed to be taking and then swearing loudly when you missed one and had to do it all again!

@@dsesuk: The battery in my "Uniden GO500" (which is a really excellent unit) "cooked" in the sun and swelled considerably. I eventually did this replacement battery trick on it. Not perfect, but it works. Why cannot the manufacturers employ "plug in external batteries"? That would be much more sensible than these designed "unserviceable" units. Uniden no longer appear to manufacture them.
That is not a 6200! Internally and externally, it looks like a 600 model which has a smaller 3 wire connector. I have a 6200 and the windscreen mount is completely different. Also mine has no screws to open the case.

@@SproutyPottedPlant It's a bit gutting as a couple of weeks ago I accidentally burned the case behind the screen. No damage to the screen, fortunately, but the case is now deformed :( The battery is still great in it though, even though it dates back to about 2003!
Reckon the reds and blacks are duplicated to cover the range of different devices these batteries fit into, so the blacks and reds are essentially the same. You've probably already clarified this in the video but I've jumped the gun half way through it.
Tomtom has poor battery management - this it charge the battery every time ignition is on. This is bad and will destroy a LiOn battery. It should wait charging until getting to around 15-20% the capacity and charge to 80% and stop charging.
I used the TomTom app on my mobile for a while, and I tried just using Google Maps, but I need my phone to be available as a phone in this business without the display being interrupted by a call or the battery being depleted by the GPS, and having the sat-nav always there in my vision every journey is handy with the mileage we put in as I often know kind-of where we're going and I just need the odd heads-up of where to turn!
It's mostly people wanting to put up fancy light fittings or a socket outlet in a corner of the room that the builder inexplicably left unserviced by such even though it was patently obvious one was always going to be needed there!
Put TomTom on your phone, updates and traffic always on. Get it from App Store or Google Play its only £15 a year. Its few quid more for the wealthy iPhone users.
I had the app for a couple of years Andy, and very good it is too, but I rely on both devices rather heavily in my working day and I prefer to keep them separate with the phone handling calls/messages and music streaming and the TomTom directing me around all the road closures Warwick District Council keep throwing up!
The phone is for calls, messages and music streaming, and I can't use Waze as Nigel always bangs on about how good it is. To use it would set a precedent that I listen to him and value his opinion.

You either need a proper spudger as used by Big Clive, an iSesamo, or a proper knife as used for mailbag by EEVblog :)

The connector wouldn't physically fit I don't think, although I'd have to open it up again to be sure.

A good one for your 'phone is MAPS.ME Maps are downloaded to 'phone and are regularly update. Very good for navigating round a city when on foot.

Firstly, thanks for the videos you produce. I enjoy watching them and also, have learnt some very invaluable knowledge from some of the content you produce!
I am currently sitting in my living room with my 18th ed book out just looking over stuff I don't use much, just having a bit of a brain workout. And it got me thinking about something I have often pondered without really getting to the bottom of.
Electric shocks.
We are all (hopefully) aware that a circuit needs to be complete for electric to flow. That being said, when touching a line conductor, there must be a path to E or N for you to get a shock.
So, scenario, I am standing in my living room, I have a rubber underlay, followed by carpet. I am wearing socks and sports trainers with an average foam sole.
If I touch a line cable, and nothing else, do I get a shock. I assume I would, but where is the path to earth.
If I take a multimeter clamp on to the earth bar at the cu and hold the other probe, I'm getting no continuity to earth, so technically I'm not completing the circuit.
Please put this to bed for me, as it bugs the hell out of me. I've not yet dropped the light fitting in my living room to try. But I will!
Hi Mitch. We have two things to bear in mind. Firstly, there's ElectroMotive Force (EMF). You get no reading out of your Ohmmeter between your body and the earth bar because it's a dead test and the voltage put out by the meter is too puny to overcome the high impedance of your body. If your Ohmmeter had a higher scale and put out a larger voltage, then you might get a reading. Similarly, on a hot and humid day where you're sweating and the air around you has a higher moisture content, then your impedance would be lower and you may get a reading. Just because something reads as having no continuity when dead can all change when you ramp up the EMF. In my nuisance glow video I showed my Billy Bollocks IR demonstrator which showed an open circuit on a resistance dead-test, but with the tester whacked up to 250V on the IR function the EMF of that voltage was able to cross from one cable into another by jumping the air gaps in the broken insulation that the screw had chewed through. If we go back to your standing on an insulating surface (your carpet, trainers etc.), then an Ohmmeter will show no continuity between you and the physical earth of course. If we introduce an EMF, 230V AC, then have you grab a live wire, although there isn't a perfect resistive path to earth, some current may still flow because the EMF is enough to break down the insulation of the materials between you and earth depending on what those materials are. That path to ground may be via an air gap if that offers a path of lesser resistance than the insulator you're standing on. There is no such thing as a perfect insulator, and any material will break down the more EMF is applied. You have to also remember that when we're talking about current flow through such materials, it can be a tiny amount - microAmps or milliAmps. It's not an effective circuit, we can't use it as 'practical' current to power the TV by connecting the appliance to line and dropping neutral onto the carpet, but the more EMF, the more leakage current can potentially flow through your insulating materials. Secondly, there's capacitance which was the subject of two previous videos. The earth is a conductor, your shoes and socks are an insulator and your body is another conductor; these are the component parts of a capacitor. A current can leak across the insulator via the electric field which develops across it when your body becomes live relative to the earth. Whichever way, it doesn't take much current to cause shock injury or death which is why RCD's trip at a maximum of just 30mA. If you were stood on a rubber mat, then the high insulating and dielectric properties of rubber would mean a stronger EMF or electric field is required to overcome it, so standing on such may be enough to 'island' you from Earth.
I've got the same model. I use a mobile WiFi hotspot that I put in the van. Works a treat, but I have to do any updates on my home WiFi as it only a small data plan...
Mine works with Bluetooth tethering, but my phone has a bloody annoying habit of turning that off. I usually have some palaver of having to switch it into flight mode and back out to reset Bluetooth to get the damn things talking to each other. I don't need it every day, but I guarantee it will be playing up when I do!

@@B3CK377 I hate Bluetooth, it's so haphazard. It's a complete lottery whether my phone will connect to either the van stereo or the sat-nav when I fire up the ignition, yet the phone always *always* connects to my Amazon Echo when I'm at home even though I only want it to do so when I'm playing music. I disconnect it, and it just goes off and reconnects again later.
Scrap it and use google maps it even tells you when people have marked speed cameras/congestion/accidents etc nowa days 👌 love the content btw

The tomtom go 6200 has cellular, flat screen and a 5 cable battery connector.
Don't know what device yours is, but don't believe it's a 6200 FYI.
You can turn the unit off and thereby making charging quicker. Just hold the "On/Off" button pressed for a few seconds and follow the instructions --at least you can with the "TomTom GoBasic".

Mind you, I can't say I miss the old map book days. Having to pull over, find where you were, memorise which turnings you were supposed to be taking and then swearing loudly when you missed one and had to do it all again!

@@dsesuk: The battery in my "Uniden GO500" (which is a really excellent unit) "cooked" in the sun and swelled considerably. I eventually did this replacement battery trick on it. Not perfect, but it works. Why cannot the manufacturers employ "plug in external batteries"? That would be much more sensible than these designed "unserviceable" units. Uniden no longer appear to manufacture them.
That is not a 6200! Internally and externally, it looks like a 600 model which has a smaller 3 wire connector. I have a 6200 and the windscreen mount is completely different. Also mine has no screws to open the case.

@@SproutyPottedPlant It's a bit gutting as a couple of weeks ago I accidentally burned the case behind the screen. No damage to the screen, fortunately, but the case is now deformed :( The battery is still great in it though, even though it dates back to about 2003!
Reckon the reds and blacks are duplicated to cover the range of different devices these batteries fit into, so the blacks and reds are essentially the same. You've probably already clarified this in the video but I've jumped the gun half way through it.

Tomtom has poor battery management - this it charge the battery every time ignition is on. This is bad and will destroy a LiOn battery. It should wait charging until getting to around 15-20% the capacity and charge to 80% and stop charging.

Dedicated devices are more usable
I used the TomTom app on my mobile for a while, and I tried just using Google Maps, but I need my phone to be available as a phone in this business without the display being interrupted by a call or the battery being depleted by the GPS, and having the sat-nav always there in my vision every journey is handy with the mileage we put in as I often know kind-of where we're going and I just need the odd heads-up of where to turn!

It's mostly people wanting to put up fancy light fittings or a socket outlet in a corner of the room that the builder inexplicably left unserviced by such even though it was patently obvious one was always going to be needed there!
Put TomTom on your phone, updates and traffic always on. Get it from App Store or Google Play its only £15 a year. Its few quid more for the wealthy iPhone users.
I had the app for a couple of years Andy, and very good it is too, but I rely on both devices rather heavily in my working day and I prefer to keep them separate with the phone handling calls/messages and music streaming and the TomTom directing me around all the road closures Warwick District Council keep throwing up!

The phone is for calls, messages and music streaming, and I can't use Waze as Nigel always bangs on about how good it is. To use it would set a precedent that I listen to him and value his opinion.
