The planet known today as Uranus was originally named George. True story! But who chose this asinine name? Why "George"? And how come it was changed to "Uranus" or all names?

Soo, how long was George George before he became Uranus? Was it like, days? Weeks? Were people actually saying to one another, "Imagine, they've discovered a new planet, named George, haha, that's so basic"? Or was it more a secret science society naming issue?

It's hard to say how long since there's no concrete date. But Bode suggested the change in 1782 and various people agreed with the name change, but it was until 1850 (almost 70 years later) that it became official "official".
