  • Model railroad operation on an On30 dual-gauge switching/shunting puzzle. This video was made at the 37th Annual National Narrow Gauge Convention in Denver, Colorado in 2017. Surprisingly, very few of the convention attendees stopped by to take a close look at this On48/On30 dual-gauge switching puzzle in spite of being in a main hallway. I'll assume that the correct proportion of the standard and narrow gauge rails convinced most that this was On3 dual-gauge.

I keep touching the turnout point rails because the fresh snow sometimes prevented the full throw of the turnout. I'm assuring the points are fully against the stock rails. I'll fine tune and clean the points soon for hands-free operation. That is one of the hazards of adding snow to a layout.

Good Job! And this is narrow gauge O scale, right?

Thanks Train Chamber. Yes, this is 1/48th O-Scale. The moving train in the puzzle is off-the-shelf Bachmann Spectrum On30 equipment that has been repainted and equipped with Kadee On3 couplers. I used the Bachmann equipment as a stand-in on my home layout for Colorado & Southern Railway 3-foot gauge rolling stock in spite of the inaccuracies compared to the prototypes. The stationary standard-gauge equipment is from a variety of O-Gauge plastic manufacturers and vintage wood kits. My "standard-gauge" trucks and locomotive have all been narrowed from O-Gauge 1.25-inch to my 1.0-inch, or 4-foot gauge. I call my 4-foot "standard gauge" On48. "O" for 1/48th scale. "n" for narrower than 56.5 in North American standard-gauge. "48" for for the 48-inch gauge of my track. On48/On30 dual-gauge preserves the visual relationship of 1.57:1 found with North American prototype standard-gauge and 3-foot narrow-gauge tracks. Please, don't confuse my On48 for Proto48. Proto48 strives for absolute dimensional accuracy in 1/48th scale model railroading. On48, on the other hand, emphasized compromise in dimensional accuracy to achieve a pleasing overall impression.
