    Everyone has their ways, the way I was taught was use metal lathe that can be found at home depot. Cut that down to the size of the hole in the plaster and drill into the old wood lath. Can use Durabond or Easy Sand. 5 min mud for faster drying and quicker coats. Or 20 with hot water, which adds in dry time. Use hair dryer in between coats to get it to dry faster. I most definitely use plastic for furniture with all the dust. A little awesome mirka hand sander that can be attached to the shop vac is also a lifesaver.

    I'm not sure how friendly your customers are but over here in Scotland sometimes I just need to get on with the job but at times chatty customers hold me back.
    I haven't found the formula yet for 'can you shut up so I can finish this job'

    Nyet, my good Comrade. I've done this a couple of times in my 1890 built homes and ended up with a drywall square that stood proud from the rest of the wall despite my best efforts to feather the edges. You can eliminate all the work you did pretty much all the way to the point of scooping your first batch of mud by doing this. Clean the area and break away any of the loose or crumbling material. Get yourself a bag of DAP Plaster Wall Patch (ACE Hardware) and mix up an appropriate amount. It mixes just like drywall mud. Work in layers. For the first layer dampen the lath with water and be sure to press the material into the gaps in the lath to form "keys". Build the area up with 2-3 layers of plaster wall patch. Plaster dries hard as rock and is difficult to sand so keep these layers at/below the surface of the wall with your drywall knife / trowel / screed board. Finish your last leveling/texture coat(s) with a drywall mud of your choice, sand as needed, and paint.
    I also have a couple of rentals with plaster walls. Before I used to groan every time I had to fix plaster damage. Now I don't even bother to charge exiting tenants for a hole like this it is so easy to fix. Apply the first coat and go scrub the stove while it hardens. Apply the second coat and go wipe out the kitchen cabinets while it hardens. Etcetera. Repair is done by the time I've prepped the apartment/house for the new tenant.

      I agree 100%. In my 35 years diing remodeling and construction the plaster will be 3/8 thick in one area then maybe as much as 5/8 in other areas. Rather then putting on multiple layers of compound to feather it all in.@ start with base coat plaster then a couple thin costs of bluelid joint compound. I almost never need a 2nd coat of plaster. However every dog digs a hole his own way.

    What was the topping plaster I tried to rewind it but you showed it so fast I couldn’t get it to stop on that box I’d like to use something like that instead of the third coat of sheet rock compound let me know what that was please it probably is a better finish

      Yes! I am doing some plaster work at my place and watching a ton of videos. They always talk about the names of the tools they are using but never what brand/type of plaster or joint compound etc!

      the whole room needs to be repainted in a situation like that. Even if he were to use the same paint left over from what they used to paint that wall it wouldve come out a slightly different shade and the whole room would need to be repainted if you wanted everything to be the same shade of color.

    So was that primer you rolled on at the end, or was it some watered down mud? Was it to get a stipple effect? If it was plaster, I was wondering if that masonry paint, Drylock would give about the same texture as plaster.

      It was primer. I used a heaver nap roller to give a little stipple. The home owners are going to need to primer the entire wall before the put color paint on it.

    This is why it costs $275 or more. Homeowners rarely understand what goes into a plaster or drywall repair until they see it done. Most of my clients are referrals also. It's the ones that watch HGTV and Diy network you've got to steer clear of. 😊

    I cant believe this but I've got my first handyman job without even trying. To be clear I'm handy around my house but never did work for others. I cut a neighbors yard and clear some brush but now another neighbor wants some minor work for major $$$. Painting 2 rooms, fix a fan, bleach a water spot and repaint ceiling and repair a couple moudings where the dog chewed it. Wants to pay more than $500. I do know that this 1 job can lead to a lot more because of word of mouth. I'm gonna watch a lot of videos!

      Dude that's really cheap I hope you take this as a Learning lesson that $500 for all that work that you are doing is not worth the responsibility plus the labor if you mess something up that dude is not going to care where they did him a cheap price or not expect you to have your word to finish you need a little wiggling room just in case something goes wrong

    You did a great job there. You can speed up the dry time with heat gun for the 20 minute and regular joint compound. just be sure not to get it too hot or you will boil the water and create bubbles. 275 dollars and I am assuming you didn't paint the wall. I love your channel. Keep them coming.

    I’m a 40 +yr drywall and plasterer that would be about a 30 min patch job for me use pink or blue plaster weld glue on the edges and lath, fill with Stuctolite or gypsolite plaster, top coat with 5 minute ,Done your welcome

    Is your definition of topping compound drywall mud. 20 minute setting is this a form of plaster? I have very bad looking plaster. I want to cut out the bad portions and repair with drywall. I will also skim the walls since I have popcorn walls. This looks similar to what you did. I just want to understand the mud that you use.

      Topping compound is the last coat of mud that goes on thin and sands easy. Its different then regular mud or setting compound.

    Level 5 finish is 5 coats, and would mean you were covering the entire wall So there is no visuals of the seems after prime and paint .
    I would have Mesh taped and used 20 to fill it , then when it sets put a coat with regular mud , and next time you’re there sand and right skim with regular mud , and sand same day.
    I find when you put an actual coat with 20, it will be raised , or create humps where the joints are, and is harder to sand .
    Been a taper (drywall finisher) by trade full time for 4 years now.
    You didn’t do anything wrong just could have don’t it a little more simple and would have produced a better job.
    Also saying all this , because you have the time to go back for the other coat because you have more jobs there . Otherwise for sure use 20 to coat it

    Nice job , in the uk we would use bonding , and then skim over the bonding , I would of not cut anymore plasterboard out straight in with bonding then skim straight over

    Not to be rude but doesn't anyone know how to mix a good sand mortar mix with stretch steal anymore?? (an improved old version... squeeze between the slats and the edges, when it hardens it is like a rock and then do the Duroc plaster for finish. One maybe two coats and NO sanding!! Use a damp sponge with the scrubber gently to take any tiny imperfections off with the flat edge ... no dust, less cleaning, strong and blends very nicely. Time.. about the same or less, cost less, better in my opinion. The stretch steal I learned with ceiling cracks that kept coming back, screw it into the slats and squeeze the sorter into the slats through the stretch steal and no more problems with that crack line... .. Oh I miss it so much!!!
    Now I work the law to force the public servants to abide by it (they are the worst criminals!.. in fact most are engaging in treason) Because unscrupulous attorneys and judges are stealing peoples property by fraud. (if you are not engaged in any taxable activity by and through an entity of the state such as an LLC, corporation, municipal subdivision of the state (subject of the state and therefor subject to the state unlike people who the state is a subject of and subject to) then you are not required to pay any "ad valorem" commercial tax!!!!!!!!! People wake up and get your house (government) under control!! The Agent can do nothing the Principles has not authorized them to do and one can not authorize anyone to do that which they can not do lawfully themselves!!
    Otherwise how can you own property "alodial" ("in ones own right, without any overlord") the only way to own property in this country!!! Remember we threw the King and all his Lords off a long time ago!! You cab have a taxpayer but you can never be a taxpayer as defined because man is sovereign in respect to all things and
    "The individual may stand upon his constitutional rights as a citizen. He is entitled to carry on his private business in his own way. His power to contract is unlimited. He owes no duty to the State or to his neighbors to divulge his business, or to open his doors to an investigation, so far as it may tend to criminate him.     So you can work your ass off for years and accumulate lots of property but with the lawless corrupt public servants your property will be taken by force and in complete violation of the written law, their oath of office and common sense!!
    Solution? and to help me get out of this legal prison of helping others for no pay (cause they have been robbed to nothing already) Please institute the following:
    That whoever holds any position of public trust or profit shall be tested every six months as to their Knowledge, Understanding and Accurate Use of the purpose and principles expressed by the Unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, the Constitution (Supreme law of the Land), United States Code (see 18 usc 241, 242, 42 USC 1983), the State Constitutions in which they work, represent or are engaged in business through the state, the Statutes, Codes and Policies thereof.
    Three week retake option is available and classes provided which by diligent attendance and recommendation by the trainer may provide for further extensions and permitted retaking of the tests to maintain office.
    Over ten years I have discovered that those in office know not the laws as they are written and intended. As a result their conscience is rendered useless. (no choice between right and wrong only loss of job, threat of loss of job (not supposed to be a job but a volunteer to serve) . So once knowing the truth the laws and the purpose and "principles" for which "any Form of Government" is bound by, limited to and "Governed" due to the fact that "its" have no conscience and must be governed.. Govern-ment .. meant to be governed... not people who are self governing.

    What do you do to get the same texture as the plaster? Even with drywall you get a flat looking spot where the patch is. I know the plaster walls have more texture. I do all the repairs in my houses and this always bothers me. I roll on primer 3 or 4 times to try to get it to match the surrounding wall but it is still not the same.

      From start to finish it probably took him 4 hours. A fan can be used to dry the compound a lot faster.

    Just subbed man, watched alot of your vids and like what you do and the freedom you have. You seem to enjoy working outside just as much as me! Do you have any tips for an 18 year old to become a handy-man and do the jobs that you do? I'd love to hear back man. The jobs I get are very labor heavy while yours are very light and seem fun!

      Frazier , i've been a handymam for 20yrs now. Absolute best advice i can offer is to work in construction for at least 3 yrs so you understand how things are built and you get some practice at those skills. Ask alot of question when you see the plumber and electrician on your jobsite (even if you are just a laborer carrying bags of sand).
      After that ultra basic experience, you will have enough amiture skills and a little bit of tools to start taking little side jobs off CL or apply to a maint crew for a property manager in town. 1 or 2 yrs of working for a manager or taking CL sidejobs and you will probly have enough skills to start a legit service and charge real money. If you charge real money before these steps i just outlined, you will be basically stealing
      Unless u grew up in a construction family working with dad since u were 12, you wont have enough skills to do the repairs presented to you daily.

    Due to the drying time, how long did it take to do this job? In order to save time, consider using the sticky mesh tape. With the sticky mesh tape you do not need to put the joint compound to hold the tape. Only a fraction of the cost added to the material but a great deal of time saved. Many thanks for the advise, keep it up.

    Nice work ,however with 20 minute mud or California one coat you could do plaster repairs like that in about 30 minutes without drywall or tape with a 12" blade .

      Plaster weld, some plaster washers, and quickset. 30 mins completion and a smaller repair area.

      It was still weak and cohld hear it cracking on the bottom side. I removed more until I got some good solid wall

      I must admit I am a professional drywaller and custom plasterer for 16 years and was born into it in the family business and did it helping out as a kid too and when I saw you measure the drywall and then go to the wall and measure it out to cut it out I thought "is he cutting the wall out instead of just cutting down the drywall piece to fit it?" but then I gave you the benefit of the doubt that it was still a loose area that needed repair, glad to see that was correct, haha.
      Honestly I could criticize the hell out of your techniques but the end result was pretty good so if it works then it works. I would however recommend finding a good flexible skim-coat trowel for the finishing coat rather than using a knife like that, it's so easy to float it compared to a knife. The one I use is perfect because it's been worn down for like 20 years of steady use and is very, very soft, if you're lucky an old flea market or garage sale may have a used one that's worn down already rather than buying new, it takes a long time to break them in from new to be really good as they are pretty stiff to start.
      Also instead of shimming the plaster which could potentially create new weakspots for later damage you can use 90 chemically hardened setting compound(Sheetrock is most popular but I prefer Continental - formerly Lafarge - Rapid Joint 90) to flare the patch out 12-16 inches wider to fill all the unevenness and get a nice smooth finish that blends well into the wall and is almost as strong as the original plaster being tied into(90 minutes is setting time, also available in 5, 10, 20, 30 minute and others for quicker work).
      Just be careful if you use the real Durabond 90, once that shit sets you need a hammer and chisel or heavy duty belt sander or grinder to smooth it out so it needs to be very smooth before it sets, lol.

      Plaster repair can be strange in old houses. You might need to only repair a small section but end up replacing half the wall because it's all barely holding on after such a long time and the shifting of the house.

      NO plaster is plaster. Sheetrock is a name brand of Drywall. Plaster is concrete troweled over wood lath.

    that box fit perfectly but goto home depot and get a drop clothe. they are reusable and if you have a back yard and you wash and hang it out to dry or wash and throw it in the back of the truck to dry.

    A trick that the sheetrock at muy new house showed me. Add regular dish soap to your joint compound. It goes on smoother and doesn't have all of the little bubbles in it.

      Richard Comeau I have a video coming out tomorrow about installing a security light. I purchased the light through Amazon. Amazon has an option to have the light installed by someone local. I called a friend of mine and had him look up the light on his amazon account and it was a $182 install charge compared to my address which was $139 install charge He lives only 5 minuets away. Its a real world example of how labor pricing works.

      Richard Comeau , if your in a nicer larger home there is more to cover and the customers expect more like he says he exceeds they're expectations, if it's a rental for example the owner or management company usually is on a tighter budget , sliding scale is pretty common if you want to keep busy making money.

    Sorry for the last question, you explained right at the end. Do you have any tips on repainting and matching the original paint color?

      Getting a perfect match for dark colored paint just for the patched area is next to impossible. A paint that is primer and finish coat all-in-one would be the way to go. When I have to repaint a dark colored wall that's been patched, I first paint the patch, let it dry, and paint it again, if necessary. Then I repaint the entire wall, corner to corner. That way, if the adjacent walls are slightly different in shade, it will be less noticeable.

      If one of my customers doesn't have the old paint. I usually get the color matched from a large chip that I get from the cut out of the wall damage. Even if the paint is a good match, I usually will paint the wall corner to corner unless it's a flat paint. This eliminates and slight color or sheen differences that there will most likely be.       Readily done. First, get a paint match as described in other comments then prime the “new” area with correct primer; light for light topcoat and dark for dark topcoat. I’ve used light primer with dark paint but it’s more difficult and don’t even think about doing a dark primer with light topcoat. :). Then paint the primed area with a light feather to blend into the existing topcoat. Review results and decide on next step. If the feather looks good just repeat with second coat and cover just a little more space when feathering. If you “missed” on the color match then paint wall to wall (corner to corner). This lets the change in lighting at the corner mask the slight paint color mismatch. No one will ever know.

    "Not expensive for this neighborhood"... So you don't charge the same for the same work in another neighborhood. That statement sounds like you jack it up for those that seemed to be able to pay more. Sort of a bad practice in my opinion. But then again they agreed to pay you your quoted amt. and you did a good job or them! So everyone is happy!

    Good video. But I would do a couple things a little differently .. 1st oil base prime around the patch that will creat a better profile so the mud have a better bound to the plaster, 2nd always use quick dry mud 5, 20 or 25min. 3rd mesh tape is the way to go not paper tape.

      I used a setting compound to mush into the cracks and for the tape. After that dried I sanded and up a topping compound on that sands easy.

    I'm curious about your thoughts on a traditional repair technique. That is to drill many holes in the wall surrounding the problem area, inject adhesive, fill and finish with compound.

    How come you used a topping compound for the last coat? Is that better then Just the fast setting compound for final coat on repairs?

      fast setting compound/hot mud is not good for a smooth finish. Its hard to sand. Last coat is always a topping compound for an ultra smooth finish. Its the right product for the job.

    Hi Handyman. Here is my question: I have been a handyman for 12years. I have done a lot of ceiling repair and texture matches. I can almost never get the texture to match perfectly. I am almost never happy with it. Do you think that is normal? I mean should I let my customers know upfront that it won’t match perfectly?

      A repair will never match no matter who does it. The only way to have all evidence of the repair completely gone is to completely skim coat the entire wall or ceiling area. Primer and paint. I always set expectations to customers on wall repairs. I do tell them that if you look for it you will see it. I also follow up with the only way to make it completely disappear. A complete skim coat and pricing for that. When I was a superintendent we had the best patch and match guys and they would tell me that there is no way to make it completely gone with a repair. I have had to go the skim coat route many times.

    Have you ever used damp paper tape? I have found that when I get the paper tape wet before I tape the joints, the bubbles are greatly reduced.

    In my opinion the paste and the "anti-crack band" should not be halfway on the wallpaper ... if you want to remove the wallpaper you will have problems? ...... you should have removed several cm of wallpaper around the hole first? ... :/

    Hi handyman. I know this is an old video but did you ever get around to or have you thought of making a video regarding qualifying customers? The past few weeks have been tough for me as far as getting people to accept my bids. I know most of your customers are repeat or referral but I am relatively new to the game and don’t always have that luxury. Going to the customers home and spending time writing an in depth, quality bid only to never again hear from the customer is frustrating. I try to throw out a ballpark number initially to gauge their reaction but that’s not always possible. I know my worth and I know what I can get from the right customers but it’s beginning to make me think I should lower my prices for new customers. Any tips ?

      When I started. (first 3 years) I kept my prices low to make sure I got the job. The idea was to get enough happy customers to start the chain of referrals. The customers got extremely hi value for their money. Over the years I raised my prices to fit the demand for my services.

    Are you ever concerned about the old platter containing asbestos? I just removed some very old baseboard trim in my 100 yr old house as per my wife's request and now she's freaking out about the crumbling cement plaster behind it possibly containing some asbestos.

      100 years ago they did not add asbestos fibers to plaster, they mixed in horse hair. So don’t worry just patch it. I own a bunch of homes built at the turn of the century. I repair holes the size of baseballs, by painting the edges and the wood lath with a Masonary Bonding Agent. Then mixing my hot mud with 50% water and 50.% of the Agent. You don’t need perfa tape. That repair will never crack . The patch becomes inseparable from the old plaster. With cracks ,I open the crack by cutting and making it wider then treating the edges with Bonding Agent like a hole.
      When a hole is too big, I use 3/8” or 1/2” Sheetrock like the Handyman. But I don’t use any perfa tape. I have been doing this for more than thirty years . Not one of my repairs has ever cracked or reappeared. I must warn you that combination of hot mud and Bonding Agent is very hard to sand. So keep it level and use topping compound to finish.

    Thank you for your video, I was always wondering if I was doing it right, you tell me, I do the same thing you do, the only difference is that I use mesh tape then I mix compound with plaster for the first 2 coats which it sets quickly too, and I end it up with regular compound. I hope I'm doing that part right.

      I used setting compound so I could have sanded in 30 minuets. This was a small side projects and was doing it on my lunch break. I let it cure over night and came back the next day at lunch time to finish it.
