    What makes your videos so watchable and educational is that you are willing to point out, and often make fun of, mistakes you make along the way. Adding too much glue, dropping a tool, etc. I assure you, your demeanor has helped me even more so than the professional skills you demonstrate. Keep up the good vids and attitude!

    We live in a bungalow built in the 50's and the section of plaster that delaminated received water damage from some old windows that were condensing like mad in the winter. Well, that condensed water was getting into the plaster on the cinder block beneath the window forcing it to delaminate, leaving an unplastered section about 18" x 12" in size.
    I'm going to try this repair method tonight so wish me luck!
    EDIT: Success!!!! I can't believe how well this took, not to mention how incredibly strong it is. So much so in fact when I tried to sand it down by hand, I nearly passed out. I'd definitely recommend a hand sander for this. But it looks great and blends in seamlessly. Thanks a million for this!

      How thick was the layer that delaminated ? I have plaster delamination with pain and it’s like 1/16” thick. Wondering how I’m going to adhere that thickness back on the wall and make it stay.

    • @domenicpolsoni8370
      @domenicpolsoni8370 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@sef2273 It was roughly about that thick. The previous owner also used some mesh in an effort to "band aid" the problem but just left a huge bulge that needed to be sanded down before I applied the glue/plaster solution. I'm looking at it right now and it's still solid to this day. The surface is also quite smooth underneath the coating of paint, with no shadows or bumps appearing in daylight.

      Don't need to. Setting compound won't crack.
      Sheetrock brand 5 minute mud. Not necessary to put glue. Just little water, and a pan at a time. YOU GOT FIVE MINUTES! GO!
      After cleaning the quickly setting panful you used, come back with your trowel or knife and press it in low angle and also shave your ridges if they are dry

      @@sef2273 I did not. Just straight onto the surface. Mind you I made sure to remove as much dust and particles as possible before applying. Something tells me that the glue/plaster mix would have adhered anyway though. It was so incredibly tacky.

    With acrylic resin, you can work afterwards pretty quick and this is extremely durable.

    I'm watching your videos and LOVE IT! While some of the materials aren't available in the states, the procedure of tackling the jobs and watching/listening to you describe what's going on is truly a huge help. I just watched this video (there are probably several) about patching a plaster wall; I own a 110 year old house with lath, metal and plaster so thick that you need a router in every room to get internet. I did a Plaster of Paris repair once (not to date myself, but that project may have been before TH-cam) and it was HARD; not only in doing it but holy crap that stuff was unsandable!! Now I know of a different way :) I'm thinking if I listen to your videos while I sleep my subconscious will take over and I'll just know what to do next. I'm currently working on a 2nd floor total tear out bathroom where a pocket door was added and needed a "refresher course" on drywall when I stumbled upon your videos. Honestly... THANK YOU for producing the videos; I know you make some 'pocket change" from your videos and you deserve every penny and then some!!
    if you need a setting to do an OLD house plaster job for a video I have the setting right here! The issues are crackled wallpapered/painted ceilings, big cracks, removed plaster with exposed lath, a subdivided make-shift world war II bathroom addition over plaster (?how's that work?), pealing paint over glue from removed wallpapered ceiling, exposed metal mesh/lath ceiling drops, water damage, the need to cut out a wall to replace a stack and more! C'mon over - LOL.
    I would LOVE a recap of mud brand comparisons (Canada conversion to USA of course); I was just at HD and *thought* I knew what I wanted until I discovered they didn't have what I wanted. I went with an old familiar green lid all purpose premix BUT because of YOU I bought some 90 min setting mix and paper tape for the joints and know the value of adding glue to mud for specific obstacles - who would have thought! I also bought a hawk since I do love my large trowel I figured it was the next step to handling large amounts of mud at once!
    Keep making them and I'll keep 'feathering the like button".

    What I see on almost every working chimney that is covered with plaster is stains.
    The problem is condensation from colder inside air and hot chimney smoke.
    To avoid it, before painting plaster around the chimney, waterproof it, seal those pores, If the chimney if made from brick. Stainless steel chimney wont leak.
    If the roof patch around the chimney is leaking because of rain, first fix that patch with tar, then walls.
    Question for Ben: Have you ever used fiberglass tape insted of paper tape? Not mesh but full fiberglass tape.
    Keep up the excelent work!

    I often use Kills primer before skimming over with All Purpose mud and let dry overnight. I let the Kills dry to tacky. Works great when feathering over painted surfaces. Kills sands at the feathered edge well too. I typically have several days to do drywall/plaster repairs because I'm doing room remodels.

      I need to do some repairs to walls with damage similar to the one he does in this video. I have cracks in the plaster. To make sure I'm reading your comment correctly- should I do a coat of Kilz Primer on the bare plaster BEFORE I repair the cracks and imperfections, and then do another coat of Kilz Primer after I've sanded the spackling smooth? Then I can finally paint the repair to match rest of wall? I appreciate any insight, this is my 1st foray into this type of repair job!

    • @L.Scott_Music
      @L.Scott_Music 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@the_ghost_of_teddy_perkins I use the Kills Primer as a sort of glue for the mud to stick well to painted surfaces. Drywall mud will stick great to bare plaster IF the plaster is sound. (so no Kills needed here.) Make sure bare plaster is not dry and dusty. Moisten before applying mud.(dab with a wet sponge)

      @@the_ghost_of_teddy_perkins No, spackling is a light weight material for small holes. Mud is short for 'All Purpose Drywall Mud' (in this context). There is Fast Set mud too but I find it's bond to be less, so I like to at least do a first coat of All Purpose first for larger patches.

    Like your videos. I'm a plasterer in the states. Was told never to use the yellow carpenter's glue by a chemical engineer. I guess if things didn't fall off the wall then it's actually just fine to use! Ha! I use regular white Elmer's glue which much cheaper than Thorobond or Larsen's... especially when you cut it with water. The two other brands I mentioned recommend not cutting with water but I'm sure they are simply PVA just like Elmer's but I don't want to chance a failure. I never get a call back with this method of cutting glue. Must let it tack up before coating over but it can be dry. Must re-glue if not coated within 24 hours. If not dry and only tacking it also acts like a slight retarder to the gypsum that's in the hot mud because we all know that hot mud and plaster SETS to get hard and does not DRY to get hard. Retarding is when the gypsum won't set as fast as expected.

    I must say, it is very refreshing to learn from someone who lives and educates for quality work! There is always a lot to learn from you, even from mixing mud. ;-) It would be great to give mixing advice and mud comparison (incl. mud consistency which then is useful for your global audience) for the different coats and purposes. Your videos are just great, educational and highly appreciated. As inspiration for future videos you could consider that even initial drywalls can be a pain and can have its own challenges which then have to be fixed e.g. uneven butt joints. You taught us already separately abt coating butt joints and flat joints but how would you coat a ceiling where horizontal flat joints meet vertical butt joints like in a chess board of rectangles? Starting with the butt joints and then the flat joints or would you finish it combined as ceiling sections? It is the skim coat, which now has to handle some imperfections and make the difference in the end...
    Thanks a lot for being our hero of quality work!

    Very well done. But I have to say, I've never had fast set delaminate on me. I make my mix a little on the too wet side which helps in adhesion. I also use durabond 90 for my initial and follow up with sandable 90 or 120 depending on how much I need to do, then I top it off with my finish coat of topping. Works perfect every time.

    I have never done anything like this, I’m a female in my 20s, but I tend to have good intuition with this kind of thing and for the most part I did it right. Chipping away all the loose material - my dad tried to say I was picking at the wall too much and just making a mess. I knew we had to remove all the loose flaking stuff! Then the glue and water primer. It makes sense bcuz the wall bare would be too porous. Again my dad thought I was wasting time.
    The problem I was running into was that my repair area is all the way down by the baseboards, and I have scoliosis so contorting myself to work down there is difficult. And the biggest mistake I made was buying “patching compound”... it sounded like the right stuff for the job! I got two brands- easy sand and fix it all. One is 5 min set and the other is 10 min. Way too fast! I cut the mixing recipe in quarters and still couldn’t use all the mix before it set in the pan! I have tried about 3-4 times and each time could barely get anything on the wall before it was too late. Doesn’t help I live in a hot humid climate, Hawaii, so the stuff sets FAST. Now I know to try 20-minute which we actually have that the guys who worked on our recent bathroom renovation left behind! Yay. Can’t wait to get the job DONE. It’s in my bedroom so I’ve had a whole wall out of commission for almost a month.

    Our drywall finisher is havaing a really tough time with air pockets. It’s really gotten worse the last year. Seems like it’s mostly over wide butt joints that are painted. I know that the painted surface absorbs water at a slower rate so that explains a lot over the painted stuff but it’s also showing up on the new drywall as well. These guys do great work but we’ve got to get this problem solved.

      creekfreakjr the air pockets are called pocks,you can buy an additive that you put in the topping compound (finish coat) that helps eliminate the pocks(air pockets)some types of topping compounds seem to be more prone to pock then others,

    @Vancouver Carpenter, in a few of your videos I’ve heard you allude to the cheapness of wallboard and drywall compound. I’d love to see a video of you chatting about the pros/cons, different building environments where they’re used these days, tools, and just general banter about the materials. I see multi-million dollar new construction houses that still use 1/2” drywall 24OC hanging from trusses. Surprises me that the use of plaster (or veneer) isn’t more apparent in higher end homes.

    Thanks for this video! I completed my first repair using this method. Question: why do you switch to all purpose mud to finish instead of a 2nd coat of quick set? Is it for easy of sanding for us DIYers or another reason?

      If you have to use all-purpose (white) thin it a bit or you'll curse that sumbitch if you have any sanding, the lite tan all purpose is great already, I make sure to paddle it to get the tiny air bubbles to go away

      All the women I see on the jobsite are cleaners or hardware installers, granted I don't even show up until after the painter's first run through and the floor's halfway in but you're definitely a rarity.

      Caleb M I always enjoyed going to job sites with my dad. He was an independent who just had a few buddies who would help him build houses whenever he called. So I'm often got to go with him on jobs. I didn't just learn construction, I didn't even just learn construction and drywalling. My mom was his cleanup crew, carpet installer, and detailer for painting/finishing. I got to learn the ropes on so many things that have given me preparation for every job I've had, plus being a homemaker. It's been a fun ride.

      I agree, it’s not cool when your repairs fall of the wall, which is exactly the issue I was having, The glue trick rocks. And I bet there are more girls watching these videos than you realize, these mostly aren’t made for people who professionally finish drywall they are made for people who don’t... and there are a decent amount of female painters and as a painter sometimes you have to fix walls, and though I can usually get it done, I’m not fast at mud work and have plenty to learn.... and my dad was a contractor as well, I also grew up on the job site, but unlike you he didn’t teach me everything, He didn’t like painting , so that’s what I got to do lots of and that’s what I got good at. : )

    • @HannahMattox
      @HannahMattox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@terraerwin2414 I would say I'm not as good at the painting, but I can do it...I just like it a little less than all of the other stuff. And I genuinely don't know why, it's the thing that makes the most noticeable difference...I mean... Aside from actually building the house 😂

    How about a one-stop video describing and showing when to use mud at different consistencies? Start with the thickest usable quickset or all-purpose and describe which situations it's used for and show us in the bucket and on the trowel how it (barely) flows. Then mix it thinner with more water and describe which situations that is used for and show us how it flows. Repeat the process through to the thinnest mud you can use for something.
    I'd like the video because some folks on youtube forget to show us the mud consistency. Or if they show us, it's difficult remembering how it compares to thinner or thicker consistencies for other uses in other videos. Uses like taping, or after the taping coat is dry, or final coats, or working on ceilings, or skim coating.

    Scraping very well and using a primer like that wood glue is the solution. I actually let the primer dry and then put the mud on the wall. Don't think it matters much

  • @BrentDarlington
    @BrentDarlington 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've never tried the glue. I will have to try it. I'd probably just prime it and mix all purpose or taping mud and 20 together. It always takes for ever to dry with plaster. The ceiling looks like it was drywalled already so no chicken wire in the corners. You going to tape the corners? Thanks, great video.
