Last time I was on Craigslist gigs I found a lot of people wanting their drains cleaned, and they were requesting the job be done at unusual times like 10pm or 1am.

I've only watched a few of this guys videos, and I already like him more than alot of others I've watched.
That price seems very reasonable and remember a lot of his work comes from referrals (like this one), If he was charging
too much then he wouldn't have gotten the job (+ additional work). I'm glad he is making a good living, at least then he is
not wasting several minutes in his videos begging for us to "like and subscribe", which annoys the piss out of me.... or have
a bunch of advertisements interrupting his videos, so he can make a few bucks!

How did you get your first few customers?
Thanks for your channel. I'm finding your videos helpful and resonant with my experience. "Exceed their expectations", a key concept that has worked for me. I've been a handyman in a fairly rural part of the country for over 15 years. I didn't have the experience in construction that you've obviously had, but have always been up front with my customers about my skills, and ability to do the job(s), and researching how to do things I've not done before. Other contractors/handymen in this area seem not to be interested in little jobs, or the really pita jobs. And it amazed me how people really seem to like that I return calls, do what I say I'll do, or call to reschedule if something comes up and I can't get there on time. What advertising I've done is focused on communities of people, like Chamber of Commerce and church bulletins. Keep up the good work.

Former HVAC contractor here. You know what truck lettering and the phonebook (old days) gets you? Aggregating, cheap, rude customers. While it brings in good customers too, it brings a lot of terrible ones unfortunately.
Also, you should charge as much as possible. There are a lot of hidden costs to running a business.

Wow!!!! Common sense can make for a good income. I help my neighbours with odd house repairs and they are blown away with my work. When I was in public school I started cutting lawns that led to handyman jobs around the customers house. Eventually I worked on restoring log barns into houses then work doing construction on new home for summer jobs. I could never justify paying someone to fix things that took common sense to fix. I was to cheap. But after watching your channel I'm thing about a career change. Thanks

im a handyman in chicago area. tough business because time is such a premium travel and traffic is a huge obstacle that alot of people underestimate in this biz. Just subscribed to your channel. I too consider myself a handyman. I have had absolutely no luck in a year of handyman gigs on Craigslist. I live in Texas and fortunately some gig ads state what they're going to pay , some state it firmly, most of which are way to cheap. Some are to far I.e., 200 miles round trip, I'm not willing to drive for 2.5 hours and work for an hour and charge only $75. What I am a firm believer in is word of mouth, I certainly strive to do the job right and move along, but there are some people that you just can't satisfy also.
How many people live in your city. I started with a box of business cards for Vista Print. I gave them to all friends and family. They hand them out to everyone they knew and it started to spread. It took me 3 years to start making decent money and 6 years to start making really good money.
Im going to start doing this. I am an excellent maintenance tech, Im HVAC certified, CPO certified and am very good at fixing AC units, electrical, plumbing, drywall, I can even fix all appliances. i get paid shit and have to work my butt off. Thank you for the video
Hell yeah man, my story is almost exactly the same. Apartment maintenance doesn't pay shit for all the different things we do. We're skilled technicians doing thousands of dollars worth of work a week to make a few hundred bucks. That is why I'm totally diggin this guy. I've been wanting to branch out on my own and get side work, I just don't really know many people. This guy is golden for sharing this knowledge.

Gota thank my old man for all those times he draged me with him to help out in the family house, i thought i was only holding a flashlight for him many times, now I realize it was not only that haha.

The one thing I can add is... If you tell a customer you will be there at 8am Monday... Be there at 8am... I get more work than I can do... Because of that one thing... Being there when you say you will... The Bid... Be on time... You don't know the times I got work because the other Bidders showed up late or the next 2 or 3 days... My price was the higher price in most cases... Be On Time... Or tell them it will be Next week so they can maybe get someone right out... I have got work two weeks later just calling to see if they got someone to do the work... Most of the time they say no one has even come to look at the work... That is when $$$ signs go off in my head... They want this fixed at any cost then...

i use to do a lot of Handy work this was about 12 years ago Then i started working for a City, Now i am on SS, Most of my work was from word of Mouth, i tried to get in touch with my past Customers & most were older people that were Retired they have died or moved to an old folks home, i wanted to use them for references, i really want to get back into it i always advertised in a local classified paper, i live in the Metro Detroit Suburbs area, everyone uses the internet Now Days, i am Old School 61 yrs now but going Crazy sitting here on SS... i Guess the Net is the way to go Now Days ?

Have some cash on hand except a job, find out tools needed go buy them. get paid find another job , repeat step one ...soon you will have all the tools you need, because you wont need to buy the same tool twice...good luck!
How do you determine price? Do you have any advise on a costumer who hasn't get ten back to you on whether or not you got the job? Do you feel sometimes a costumer is just calling for a free estimate and that's all?
I will answer your questions based on my personal experience. You should know how long a job will take to know how many hours you would be putting in, the cost of materials, gas, and insurance, and what quality of work you do compare to what's out there. You doing shatty work but expecting top dollar is unrealistic. Secondly, what are you expecting if you put in a 40-hour week? So for example, I am not that good at spackling but I will repair a wall, I will put time into watching a video or two, maybe even practice on some sheetrock to get better at it but I need to make 1000 a week for this to be worth my time. So I say 1000 divided by 40 equals 25. So gas might cost me 40 in a pickup today, I have to drive 1 hour there and one hour back and I have to let it dry and come back tomorrow to sand and paint and clean up. So the total between drive time 4 hours, work 4 hours and 25 in materials 40 in gas. So you see his price of around 275 was good. Now once you have the experience you know this is the going rate but to increase the profit you might use a quick-drying compound and finish it in the day. So you have to factor in experience, know-how, time, and what won't scare the customer off.
As for someone I have driven to and looked at the job and given an estimate, how I eliminate wasting my time I try to feel people out. If they seem like they jerking my chain I will tell them, "Hey, I would love to help you but you and I know at today's gas prices I can come to give an estimate which is 25 dollars if you give me the job I will deduct it from the cost of the repair." Or you can then turn around if you hear them being hesitant and say well I like to do it in person because maybe I might miss something, or I might miss in the photo I can give a guestimate by video but it could be more or less once I'm in person.
You give them options that do not waste your time so if they do not call back I have not lost anything and if I go to give an estimate I got gas money to cover travel for free. Once you show professionalism people get the message that you're not here to play games. I do not do a lot of talking, I give them the price and let them figure it out. People also like the word guarantee my work. I also sell people basic maintenance plans. Fees for just in case. I do a bi-weekly home and yard inspection, and they always find some minor thing for me to do. It cost 750 yearly and it always leads to me being the person they get used to managing the house for them. Those customers get a 10 percent discount on all jobs done. Their family becomes my family.
Once in a while, I will fix something and not charge them a penny. They love me. As for a free estimate by phone? Again I advise that I come to look, if it is something simple I ask them, "This is what I would charge but in these times what would be something that would make you tell me to come to fix it now?" They often have a price in their head and will go about 50 dollars lower than it. So they say well I needed this door hung and was only looking to spend 300. If it's a slow day and it's a few hours why not go do it? That's 300 no one else will give you! Get into their minds and think like a homeowner struggling. Keep in mind everyone watches a TH-cam video before they call you or google what should be the price. Try doing that yourself and see what numbers might come up and if it's something you can live with. To me, I'm just trying to pay my bills and might not ever get rich but die trying. BEST OF LUCK

Let's face it' a handyman gets bad raps as is the true reality of the home owners take advantage of us as being an easy mark not pay what they owe. We provide a service that's usually given & priced fairly opposed to the licensed contractors using their license to steal. You get what you pay for with most handymen but never with a licensed tradesman. It's true some handymen are out to sin & win, but it's not all of them as never do you find a decent cost from any of them corporate business enterprise Co.within. It's the reason so many of us use the handman as should be verified on affordable standards before you hire them & or you should expect paying them fairly what they ask for as they for the most part are cheaper than any others . If you desire high dollar expectations than you need to hire the high dollar contractor & or be content with perhaps good decent work a notch below perfect & pay the handyman his worth without nick picking him apart for minor flaws. F.C O.L He's the handyman /not the lone tradesmen professional or specialist of one trade but multiple trades doing it all at cut rates. He'll save you the day you will pay the other guy as he does his best If so you were to pay him his real worth & value, It be on average the cost going up another 55% on his true value for making it right It's quoted in the bible' you should pay a man his worth & not be what you deemed it to be. or dreamed it should be or to what you want it to be. It's like this, if he so set's a price agreed upon, Are you going to be willing to pay him more than he asked for? I doubt it' Likewise an agreement is an agreement you need to honor it & have the integrity & pay him forward his total, unless it's only done on few exceptions to be a total disaster & totally unexceptable. You need & must give grace & credit 'where credit is due & not unjustly justify it to escape your payment of it! In the end we will all be justified & God will multiply your sins ten fold for not paying the laborer his fair wage. Mission Gearhead I would say the difference between contractor and handyman is weather you want to work or build a business. handyman can make a great living but at the end of the day if its just you or you and a helper your really not much different than a regular job that pays by productivity. if you own a contracting company the goal is to leverage employees labor for your income. if you have three or four employees working jobs your not at you can call yourself a business owner.
