Hello I am not a Gambian but I am interested in your history, I am just wondering was Essau within the "Ceded Mile"? On Google maps it looks like it would be.
Essau was within the Ceded Mile and it was the administrative capital of Niumi,it was where most old military installations were and Portuguese settlers as early as 1600’s at a place called Essau Jiffetti.The remnants of those settlements were still visible even around the 1990’s.
I think we are missing an important aspect of how Banjul was founded.Before Alexandra Grant arrived in Gambia the people and Kings of Essau where already frequenting Banjul by cutting Banjulo trees to build benches and beds out of it,that’s how Banjul got its name.But no Alexandra grant was just a settler in Banjul not the founder.
