Very often, chess players play Bg4/Bg5 trying to pin the knight to the queen. In this video, GM Igor Smirnov analyzes several games of Magnus Carlsen to see how he handles such positions.
He has discovered that Carlsen consistently applies 4 key rules to either counter this pin and punish his opponents or to make use of the pin himself successfully.
Additionally, you will learn about pins occurring in various forms beyond bishop-knight pins, as well as the two types of pins and how to use them effectively.

Puzzle solution: 1.b6+ is the way to go. Black has to accept the pawn sacrifice or else Rh8+ will be mate soon. Let says Rxg6 has been played. In this case, you just pick up a queen and you are up a full queen, so black would try Kxg6 , but then you play this beautiful rook sacrificing. Rh6!, now it's you that pinning his pieces and you will either win a rook or a queen in the next move. Pin this ♥️
its b6 not g6
> *Pin* this.
Staying true to the video subject I see.
How will Black go Kxg6?
Wow you are genius 😮
He should pin this comment ;)
I had b6 check but couldn’t get more than a move past that idea
Best move is b6+!. This is a great example of rule 3. Attack right away using forcing moves! If they accept sacrifice with, Kxb6,Rh6!!,Rxh6,Qxe7!.
White wins a Queen!. If black accepts the sacrifice with the rook. Rxb6,Qxe7! Wins full Queen! If black does not accept the sacrifice then: If Ka8 or Kb8. Then Checkmate. With the move: Rh8+,Qe8,Rxe8,Rxe8,Qxe8!. White wins.

Puzzle solution:
1. b6+ Kxb6 (1...Kb8 2. Rh8+ Qe8 3. Rxe8+ Rxe8 4. Qxe8#) 2. Rh6 Rxh6 (3. Rxe6 after any other move) 3. Qxe7
Fantastic pins , thanks GM Igor Smirnov sir for very interesting teaching post 🎉🎉❤❤
Thanks Igor and Carlsen for this information
Great video and great puzzle! Thank you Igor!

Pawn b6 for the puzzle.
If king takes the pawn, rook to h6 to absolute pin the black rook. Black can't capture the rook without hanging the queen.
If king retreats to a8 or b8, rook h8 is checkmate in a few moves, forcing the black queen to block.
Just arrived after losing 3 matches from pins
B6+! And rh6.or mate on the back rank. Ciao.
Answer to the puzzle: pawn b6+. King takes, then rook h6 pins the black rook. White will either be a queen up or rook up at the end of the variation.
Hi Igor, thanks for the nice video, as you request, i'm a pretty sicilian nadjorf player about 1900 elo, but i have some worries dealing whites with 6.Bg5 and the chekhover variation (4.Qxd4). So can you make video about these system please? Cheers
Why doesn't Rxf5!! work at 11:30? Seems fine to me bcuz if Qxf5 it's Qxg7# if gxf5, g6 locks the king in a cage and there's a mate somewhere I'm pretty sure. If any other move then black loses the queen.
1.) Increase pressure, dont trade
2.)Ignore opponent threats sometimes
3.)attack using forcing moves
4.)pins to the king are best
The last puzzle was a good one! Pinning the pinner after P->b6 check. BobChess has it described below.
That last puzzle is so cool
ill say it again: best chess content per unit time on YT
The continuation b6+, Kxb6 (if Ka8 or Kb8 is checkmate with Rh8+, Qe8, Rxe8+, Rxe8 and Qxe8++), Rh6, Rxh6 and Qxe7 with winning advantage.
Normally the solution is easy to find when they tell you _"play and win",_ and not so simple when you are alone in front of the board :(
Ben Finegold would have a field day with these examples. "YOU get a pin! YOU get a pin! YOU get a pin!" "With so many arrows, black is definitely lost."
b6+ key move , if Ka8 or Kb8, Rh8++, if King takes on b6, Rh6 pinning the rook. If Rook takes b6, Black Queen is taken by White Queen
I learnt a lot of ideas
Now we just need the key rules to play like rashid nezhmetdinov. Could you analyze his best games and make a video about, please? Thx.
In the 3rd example, why is Rh7 a bad move? It looks like it forces a Q exchange and eases the prrssure for black?
For example 3 wouldn’t queen moving to f7 after the knight is pinned completely stop this attack instead of moving the rook and giving the pawn a shot at promotion?
I've seen a lot of chess videos and I'm trying to create a thinking system that can filter out the various golden rules and concepts. I thought in the following way and order: 1) discover the opponent's biggest threat mainly within my half of the board 2) Try to attack any piece or weak square mainly in my opponent's half of the board 3) If number 2 is not possible, try to prepare an attack using preferably the least active piece. WHAT'S YOUR OPINION? I await response. thanks
14:10 it is better to protect knight with king
B6+ and then either Rh6 or Rh8 depending on whether or not black takes the pawn
It's entertaining and improving me at Chess.👨🏻🎓😎
When your Queen is absolutely pinned and a capture or block is not enough to save you, see if you have either a check or checkmate. If not, your game is lost.
In this case, check with b6 is possible, which allows you either a mate with Rh8, after Ka8/Kb8 and the loss of Black's major pieces, or a counter pin on Black's Rook with Rh6, winning the Rook and leading to a won game.
b6 check wins :) if black moves away to a8 or b8 then Rh8+, black cannot take the pawn with the rook or it loses the queen and if black takes with the king, white plays Rh6. Nice video again, thank you so much.
Does anyone have the full game of Carlsen - Ponomariov?
Pb6check, if ka8 or kb8, then rh8check is more ever a mate, if kxp, then rh6 is a win
The answer to the last puzzle is b6. If king takes, Rh6 pins the rook to both the queen and the king. If Kb8 then you checkmate on the back rank
Hi, very interesting comments, but what about playing Kf7 at 13'59'' of the video?
Tku
loses to c8=Q Rxc8 Bxe6+ king moves or captures, then Bxg7
@@dalemcdowell2684 tku
1. b6+ Kb8 or Ka8
2. Rh8+ Qe8
3. Rxe8+ Rxe8
4. Qxe8#.
Or
1. b6+ Kxb6
2. Rh6 Rxh6
3. Qxe7.
Aha! The cross-pin, when a piece is simultaneously pinned along perpendicular axes!
The Last one is funny! Cold. ah! GG! my friend. GG!
b6+! If Kxb6 Rh6 wins the Re6 an the next move. If Kb8 or Ka8: Rh8+ wins both black pieces and would still be checkmate on e8: Rh8+ Qe8 Rxe8+ Rxe8 Qxe8#)
I need more video's like this in my life. Lovely just lovely~
Glad you enjoyed it!
nice puzzle
1. b5-b6+!!!
If Ka7-a8 or Ka7-b8, 2. Rh4-h8+, Qe7-e8, 3. Rh8:e8+, Re6:e8, 4. Qe3:e8#.
If Re6:b6, 2. Qe3:e7 and white has Queen for free.
If Ka7:b6, 2. Rh4-h6 🙂and in the next move has Rook for free...
Wow!
b6, Kxb6, Rh6, rook on e6 is pinned in all directions😂 (Kxb6 forced bc otherwise Rh8 leads to checkmate)
Check with the pawn then rook h6 at the end
Sir Carlsen just amazing 🔥
For the puzzle: b6+ Kxb6, Rh6! Rxh6, Qxe7
Push pawn to b6. And if King x b6, white plays rook to h6.
White up queen rook in the last puzzle.
2nd game was the best here, comical if you're on the White side.
b6+!! is the key move
Rule #2: ignore and amplify. Don’t submit, double down on your own attack. Right?
Its a rainy pin 😅 10:04
white to check the king with pwan at b6. if black take the pwan with the king then white will pin rook with rook at h6 .
Puzzle solution b6+ and white wins!!
im 1200 chess and it took me around 15sec to solve it :D!
Solution : b6+, moving king to a8 or b8 doesn't make sense because of the move Rh8 and eventually it will be a checkmate. And taking with rook will only lose the queen. So it needs to take with the king ,K×b6, then Rh6 is the final nail in the coffin and the rook is pinned and we are winning.
Please support my comment Igor.
Cool.
Me, ignoring my opponent to amplify my attack....
Opponent proceeds to checkmate me with a scholars mate 😦...
1. b6!
Out of curiosity, why didn't the queen take the knight when it moved to K7?
b6+ (Rxb6, Qxe7), Kb8, Rh8+,Qe8,Rxe8,Rxe8,Qxe8#. Therefore, Kxb6, Rh6, Rxh6,Qxe7 (or else rook is lost) +-
Pawn B6
If he runs
Rook up checkmate
If he takes with king Rook To 6 rank And You win
If he takes with rook Take hsi queen and win
Opening line from white against Scandinavian modern defence 😭
'PP on the PP'
Rule 1- Increase, don’t release! (Increase pressure!!!)
Rule 2- Ignore and amplify (ignore your opponents threats and increase your own)
Rule 3- Attack right away and use forcing moves (when you have a pin attack right away and use forcing moves to distract your opponent from the pin)
Rule 4- Relative pin vs absolute pin! 12:56
B5 to b6
We Forget all rules when we play our opponent just like magnus when he plays Hans Niemann.
Pawn b6
Ignore and improve or as the legendary Jeremy Silman used to say: Push your own agenda.
Puzzle: Not b6+. Because black sees the Grim Reaper at his door and decides to quietly shake hands, instead.
B6
Sir, iam new learner
Hello
b6+
Easy b6+ Kb8 Rh8 Qe8 RXQe8+ RxR QxR+ or b6+ Rxb6 QxQ 1-0
Increase, don't release!
b6
Lose the text... we can hear him but we can't see the pieces with the text.
b6 Kxb6; Rh6 Ka5; Re6
please reconsider leaving puzzles unsolved i know some might solve it in the comments or us taking the position in a study and solve it with an engine but hearing and seeing the solution is much better and for that unfortunately i have the video👎🏻
b6!!!
Kb6 Ra6!!! 1-0
For the puzzle, I believe the correct move should be
b6+
if black reacts with Ka8 or Kb8, then
b6+ Ka8/Kb8
Rh8+ Qd8/Qe8/Qf8
Rxd8#/Rxe8+/Rxf8+ Re8
Qxe8#
will be an inevitable checkmate
If
b6+ Rxb6
Qxe7
white will be up a queen
If
b6+ Kxb6
Rh6
the e6 black rook is cross-pinned and the best reaction of black will be Rxh6 and allow Qxe7, which would be a losing Q+3p vs R+3p endgame
An additional hint about the Q+3p vs R+3p endgame, unlike pawnless Q vs R endgame, which is a hard win even to world champion level players, when both sides has pawns, it would be much easier since white can trade the queen for the rook when one of the pawn can promote before black.
In this position, white has an outside passed pawn, which the rook cannot take after Qxe7, because Qe6+ will fork the king and rook. White can easily lift the h pawn and force black rook to sacrifice for it. Then it will be an easier Q+2p vs 3p endgame
Pp on the pp
Day 1 of asking: to all the fans of Igor Smirnov (part of the Igor nation) can we call ourselves 'Igorians' ?
I love pinning women
1.Pawn moves to b6 check
2.King eats the pawn (or else it would be checkmate in a few moves)
3.Rook moves to h6 pinning the queen and the rook
4.Enjoy White's checkmate
