i saw it but i figure it was a good move cause i figure the rook was going to move to attack the pawn and i had thought it clear the problem. so i did not spot it clear a line for the queen to hit the rook, sac the knight
As a rapid 1400, I saw D4 and wondered why he didn't play it, but I did not see the rook capture. Instead I was calculating queen D8 afterwards. After I played it I probs woulda seen the rook move.
As an 1100 nooby, i saw d4 in its entirety and the reasons why it worked. The cap accusation makes me feel even better about it hahaha, but i wasnt playing the actual game with pressure as levy did so yeah
The position reached at 9:30 with 1. d4 is so complicated that nobody could have see all the possibilities in real time. Here we are, after three days, and our crowd sourced analysis came up with two interesting responses that I didn't see. But neither one works. 1... Nxe4 (threatening the fork at c3 if QxR), 2. QxN, QxN 3. Rb8+, Re1 3. RxR mate as it is supported by the Q at a4. 1... Qg6 (threatening to take the rook at b1 with check) 2. Rb8+, Re1 3. QxN+, forcing mate in two. The other knight moves (d7 or e6) do avoid mate, but cost the exchange as white takes the rook at e2 and black takes the knight at d5.
i saw pawn D4 and im a 900 lmao, the difference is that im not sitting here calculating a bunch of moves im just seeing a very obvious basic pawn move. sometimes when brain go monke it happens to be the best move.
I spotted d4 double attack as a 1100 rapid, but that's only because I wasn't the one playing. It's a lot easier to find these things when there is 0 pressure, which is why backseating is so annoying.
If you've got thousands of people watching, and 10 of them spot a tactic and point it out, that's only a fraction of a percent. Of course thousands of brains will catch more things cumulatively than one very smart brain, brains are chaotic and will find things by chance more than by skill. Basically, don't get one-guyed, Gotham.
D4 was the only move that makes sense in that position, even my 7 year old nephew who has just learned how pawns and queens attack saw it. Of course he knew that the knight was under attack and the rook was attacked by the queen and there was no way to protect both.
I think it's legit that some players have a tendency to spot their "pet tactics" better in a quick game. Levy is right about not seeing all the refutations (or lack thereof)
Actually, I think there's something to that, and I now am very curious about what results a study would find about that. I know I spot knight forks very well (because it's my favorite thing to do in all of chess), but I miss the most basic "sac to mate" combos
Gotham at times it seems he takes risks instead of playing a safer move he seems to go out on a limb with a do or die tactic but he’s been winning so more power to you
"yeah, d4's a good move" and I'm like "no yeah kick the knight, seems legit." then Levy drew the line from the queen to the rook it was "OOOOOOOOOOHHH"
He's right about one thing, "The secret is not to lie to yourself." Everything I've done in my life, which was HARD (and required long-term commitment) I achieved BECAUSE I was acutely aware of my failings. Ok im curious too, what is wrong with pawn d4? Pawn attacks knight, at same time queen discovers attack rook! I mean what was black gonna do with d4 move?
Keep going, you protect the rook with the queen. Knight takes rook, queen takes back, and white knight on f4 falls. So overall you’ve traded knights and rooks, and you’re down 2 pawns (a4 and c3)
Sorry to break it to you, but I saw d4 and I'm sitting at 1050 daily (the time control I play the most). It doesn't mean I would have played as accurately overall for the game, but I did see d4 with the intention of the double attack. Anyway, all the best.
I hate that new animation. It blocks the first move view for like 1-2 seconds. And I don't know how to disable it either. So for every match I've played, its gonna have -2 seconds from the full timer. I'm just gonna leave it active and pretend I'm berserk-ing the match.
Ha! I saw the D4 move but when I calculated it, I think best move was to sacrifice the black knight to protect the rook. He can't take white knight because the rook was under attack so.. its very much a missed win. Glad I saw it though!
I'm 500 and I spotted pawn d4 pretty quickly because of the discovered attack on the rook but, then again I'm just laying in bed not under time pressure and live stream to hundreds or so people.

Pawn d4 is a very easy to spot tactic as a 1400. Only reason I spotted it n Gotham didn’t is cuz I’m not under time pressure 😂
True but you also have to see that he can’t take your Knight because it’s back rank mate
i saw it but i figure it was a good move cause i figure the rook was going to move to attack the pawn and i had thought it clear the problem. so i did not spot it clear a line for the queen to hit the rook, sac the knight

I saw both and I'm a lichess rapid 1400. It's far easier to be a viewer though.
Yeah, I'd do pawn to D4, just because "me attack horse, ooga booga"
200 blitz rating here. I saw D4 double attack from move 10. Trust me.
I saw the attack. Don't let it hit the ego
Me too... but I also continually make stupid blunders from playing too fast. Swings and roundabouts :)
As an 1100 nooby, i saw d4 in its entirety and the reasons why it worked. The cap accusation makes me feel even better about it hahaha, but i wasnt playing the actual game with pressure as levy did so yeah
I “spotted” that based on pure “pawn go brrrrrr”, not calculating
no way Gotham was so shocked about a small new animation
I was also that shocked at that new animation when I first got it on Chess.com, and I hate it
i think its just because it revealed his opponents name but im not sure
Yeah, i don't play chess and when i see the move i though of played it makes my "that's a neat coincidank" part of brain very happy.
Seeing the move is legal. That's insightful, Levy.

Levi’s commentary on games even while he’s playing is top tier I’d even say better than hikaru instructively wise
I'm 1400 blitz and i spotted but while watching you play, which is pretty different from playing it in an actually game, nice game Gotham!

gotham, your videos are the reason i got into chess, and i want to thank you for that :)
11:48 🤣🤣
even if you play that thing ( like d4 there ) levy gonna claim that you didn't spotted that and that was ACCIDENT
I saw both D4 and queen attacks rook right away, but I probably wouldn’t have seen it in the game😂😂

I thought Qa4 was a bit off, but the entire game was well-done. Seeing details, finding sequences, keeping on course strategically. All good.
i saw D4 because i read comments and they all talked about D4 so all i was doing was waiting for a possible good d4 mvoe.
Tactically sharp? He drew a line for a knight that already got taken in his calculation. Is bro doing other kinds of lines?

why did you take off your hoodie lmaoooo

No it's not think of something it's seeing something
at 7:19 i thought he should've played padw d4, someone better then me pls tell me why its wrong
I did not see pawn to D4 so I am indeed in idiot.
What if after d4 opponent played rook takes g2 check and after king takes he plays queen g6 check winning the rook on b1?
you will simply lose since the black king is exposed and you can easily take the knight on c5 with a check then it’s checkmate
I saw D4 instantly but only reason I saw it is cause its not me playing the game and 2. I watch ALOT of Hikaru.
I would've played d4 because me attacc horse. Would not have seen me attacc rook
