The reason it takes so long to paint the blessed Thousand Sons is to encourage you to listen to audiobooks and lectures while you paint. Any proper Thousand Sons fan should pursue knowledge as much as a fun game or a pretty model. Painting some Horus Heresy tactical Thousand Sons let me listen to my buddy Milton. What a chap, he was. "Who kills a man kills a reasonable creature; but he who destroys a good book kills reason itself." - John Milton, Areopagitica
Poorhammer sent me here lol. Nicely done still trying to make painting the Rubric Marine a fun experience. Hopefully when I get my first box in after I finish practicing with some Chosens from my Eldlitch Omens set, my first batch turns out better than when I was getting back to basics after being away from the hobby for years.
I literally quit the hobby for about fifteen minutes halfway in to my first scarab occult terminator! Finishing them up now and super proud of it even though they're a bit of a step back in quality over some of my other recent models. This is will be a great guide for when I do my rubrics, I had been trying to shade the terminators with a blue wash which ended up changing the TSons blue to a more pure blue so seeing how the nuln oil does better is really helpful.
Looks good. I like your approach. Just dived into this army because of the Christmas box they announced. Thanks for your work here, a nice presentation.
As I'm not a heretic, I'm using this guide to paint the Thousand Sons armour pieces I've stuck into the bases of my Black Templars, so they can be walking over the remains of their foes. Many thanks!
I just started a 1k sons army. And Im painting like Mr Duncan. Its better to paint the head stripes yellow then pick out the blue stripes. I like the one you painted =)
I just started Thousand Sons as my first Warhammer army. I have next to no experience painting and It took me 8 hours to paint just one rubric marine. Hoping that I can speed up as I learn. Somehow you make the details look so much larger in this video, maybe I need a finer detail brush...
It takes a lot of practice! Having fun is the main thing. You'll be surprised how quickly you improve your abilities. Thousand Sons are a very tricky army to paint, you've chosen a hard one to start with!
"If you haven't already considered selling all of your Thousand Sons" Broooo when 40+ rubric marines are your core you start thinking you made the wrong choice
My goal is to have literally have 999 Thousand Sons marine models + 1 secret Alpha Legion model among them. So far, I got 99 and the corpse bitch ain't one.
Just a heads up if anyone is wondering if there is really is a way to "speedpaint" Thousand Sons. There is one method, but it could be categorized as 'cheating'. If you wish to find out, read on. The method is to paint a color scheme that does not require doing detail work, this means paint schemes where a single color covers the majority or the whole of the model. Here are some examples: 1. Ghosts: this is an easy one. There are quite a few videos on how to paint ghostly models and they don't require too much detail work. It is mostly a layer of green paint of some kind, and some drybrushing. Certain videos go into more depth, with more steps, but the general idea is easy to apply. 2. Statues: either stone or metal statue, this is another easy scheme that uses a predominant color on the mini and some extra glitter so to speak for depth and effect. I think some white stone statue or copper statue Thousand Sons would look good. Remeber, the above only works if you don't mind tabletop level minis. If you want your Thousand Sons to look stellar, then you will have to put in more work as the video has indicated. That being said, don't be discouraged. Take it one at a time and soon enough you will finish your army. :^D
as someone who is currently new to WH40K and choosing the Thousand sons would you recommend to fully build them or not as i have built 2 and when it comes to painting getting behind the guns seems difficult
Unfortunately buddy I don't have any Grey Knights or I absolutely would do so! You're the fourth or fifth person to request it. I'll see what I can get hold of and sort one out.
In my case I've used both Retributor Armour and Gauntlet Gold from Colour Forge, and both were absolutely fine. Can't speak for any others unfortunately.
Hey man great vid! I'm new to 40k and painting and went for Tsons... Now realising that may have been a mistake haha. It would be awesome if you could add a list of paints used in your video description - I think I'm going to follow these instructions exactly.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 don’t mean to pester but I notice most of the paints you use are Citadel... Do you think the less expensive alternatives are okay to use too?
@@novaprospects You can try, Army Painter are cheaper and will yield similar results, but I can't guarantee how they'll turn out. If you go to a local gaming shop or an online retailer you can get Citadel paints for cheaper. With the 40k paint set and the remaining paints from this list you can paint largely anything - you can always mix colours to make new ones!
I find that if I add a bit of medium to the blue it helps it to flow around all the panels a helluva lot easier as all the detailed areas are effectively raised, that really speeds up that bit of the model
They really do suck so hard. Lovely models, but at the same time... that needs to be a project of love for sure. I'm currently on number 30 of 40 for a commission.
As with most things, my major limitation is a lack of models for different factions. I mainly rely on using people's models they've sent for commissions! If you have any spare models, or ones that you wouldn't mind featuring (to be returned to you, obvs!) then please do feel free to message on Instagram @critical_hit_wargaming or Facebook.com/criticalhitwargaming
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 thanks for your help, some people were saying its suppose to look shinier with black primer but i honestly didn't how that would happen lol
Very helpful thanks so much. I've started airbrushing my black legion gold too and blocking in the black...works a treat. So goddamn true about not filling in hidden armor plates. The key to not going insane when painting is asking the following question regularly: "is anyone really going to see this??".
after using an airbrush for the past year, I cannot stand to see any imperfections in paint layers and painting these like this is killing me. ill die with a panted army.
If you think those take a long time to paint.... Nothing compared to my plague marines 😂😂😂 all those horns and tentacles, guts, teeth, eyes, symbols, nurgle jewels, bells, tongues, faces, skulls.... On each and every model.. and just like thousand sons, bronze trims on every body part, around the legs arms hands feet torso, around the head and neck, around each shoulder pad.... I'd say plague marines take me easily 2-3 times as long as rubric marines do..
They take a while, but you can limit the palette on Plague Marines to green, bronze, black, pinks and bone colours so you can get through the details without constantly changing paints. All subjective though, for me personally I can do a Plague marine quicker than a Rubric Marine.

You are wise beyond your years. And likely entirely correct.
OMG thats an interesting take :D The one thing that puts me off TS is how insanely detailed even the regular troopers are...
Great comment
With how excited he is about painting one rubric, I can tell I’m gonna have a good time doing a whole box of them + combat patrol 😭
Merry f***ing Christmas! 😅
Its probably cause im a procrastinator but I’ve gotten 2/10 marines completely done in 3 months lmfao!
This is the best tutorial I have ever watched. The painting is also nice but the commenting is pure joy haha
Glad to hear it! Thank you 😆

Thanks for this, got the big court of the crimson king box as my first kit and these guys are killing me!
There's no really quick way of doing them, but at least this is the most expeditious way of doing the box art scheme!

Is basing in gold easier than basing in blue? I figured that the gold bits being raised up higher, basing blue and painting gold would be easier
