While I don't have a Scout to test on, I do go over how Ride Command works on the 2022 Indian Chief and what's needed to possibly get it to work on Scout or other Thunderstroke models.

    If we consider that the list price of parts is generally about 3 times their cost, this indicates that a factory Ride Command equipped "premium" version of the Scout, with cruise control, and everything except perhaps ride modes, should be possible with a price increase of only a little over a thousand dollars. Now, that's a premium package I would actually buy.

      If it may work on a scout, any chance it'll work on brother Octane?
      I'm skeptical. Is the scout software, firmware all the same with the bike the RC came off of? Like u said, would the scout modules be aware of a display....
      What if the scout us display ready but the displays emselves were not. Then maybe it would work.
      Seems like something an honest Indian tech or engr could answer w/o putting too much money into it.

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Scout has different firmware, but the speedometers use a 16-pin connector like Chief's ride command. If you can match the wiring, it could work. And most Indian techs won't know the answer because they go by the book. An engineer probably won't answer that lol.
      Scout could already be display ready. If you wiring up the ride command the same as to the speedo wiring on Scout, Power to Power, Can To Can, etc. It very well could work and then it's just mounting the GPS (which plugs into ride command and not the ECM) on the bike somewhere. And, mounting the ride command to the handlebar somehow. Obviously, I'm very curious about this haha.

    I always thought it would be cool if the scout had some of the updated features some of the bigger bikes do. Maybe not all, but some. I ride a 2016 Scout and it would be cool to have some more of the modern technology on it. I do like the old fashioned odometer, but some updating would be cool to see. It also might make some owners upgrade to the newer models.

    Good video topic! Something else I have questioned is the parts from the FTR. One part in particular is the cruise control from the FTR to the Scout Bobber Twenty. An electronic CC is available from McCruise in Australia and is a supposed to be a suburb product but love having options!

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I'd think it would be on all touring models after the buzz with Chief. It could be they're keeping it analog for the older crowd too. But, they could just offer it in a higher trim like Chief/FTR.

      @@BrandonBicasso I think Springfield is supposed to be less bells and whistles for that crowd that doesn't want all of that. I would still love it if they made it a possible accessory though because I want a Springfield, and I'd also love to be able to have/use that display. Especially if I get a Dark Horse Springfield. I'm not worried about how well GPS works though. I want to get, and use, some motorcycle maps from Butler, and kind of get around a bit old school that way. I'd probably use my phone and Google maps for the more turn by turn to get to a camp site sort of thing though.

    I tried to make it work as well, but don’t have the necessary tools to get it to successfully work.

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just didn't have the bike at the time to try it. I spoke to an engineer about it for '25 Scout. Said it could work with some wiring swaps. It's just a display that takes information from the ECM so you could wire a different one to it if you wanted. You just won't get cruise control and the modes. That info isn't written into the ECM so you'd have to rewire the bike to get that.

    • @sparkyastwo
      @sparkyastwo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What if we swapped the ECU or flashed the older one?
      I’m thinking about the cost. I would rather spend the money on my 22 bobber. 1) It’s paid off. 2) It only has 1500 miles on it. 3) It’s an ICON ABS with the vin 190101. So, I would rather spend the money on swapping an ECU, wiring harness and speedo instead of forking over $16,000 plus, plus.

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You'd need an aftermarket ECM like Haltech or MaxxECU and rewire each sensor on the bike. Everything is there for cruise control. ABS, wheel speed sensor, electronic throttle and body, cluth/brake sensor. Indian ECMs use the VCM for cruise control to work and Scout pre '25 doesn't have that. I dunno on the cost but I'm studying the wiring to try and get ride command on my Scout. The first 5 wires (on the speedo) between Chief/Scout are the same. (CAN High, CAN Low, Switched Power, Instrument Fuse out, Ground) Oil Pressure, Fuel Light, High Beam and Mode button aren't. Other than the oil pressure on another pin on Chief, the other stuff is sent over the CAN bus. (Diag, Nav, maybe?, Fuel Guage) What I don't know is if Scout/Chief are sending the same stuff over CAN, but they do send similar stuff like turn signals, speed, rpms from the ECM to the speedo. I did put my Scout speedo on Chief last night and while it powers on, it doesn't do anything beyond that. (I don't have a fob programmed so couldn't put the pin in) Still researching it.

    Did you had a chance to test it on a Scout? I am REALLY interested, no matter the cost... If the speed, rpm and the basic indicators are shown it is a big win. I already enlarged the tank so if it works, I can try to fit in the tank the Chief fuel level detection system and see if it works.

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't. Don't have access to a Scout. Depending on which Scout model you have, wires will have to be spliced off the main harness. The speedo harness doesn't disconnect like the Chief's harness.

  • @jasonshortphd
    @jasonshortphd ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ECM on the Scout does not send the same data out at all. It is a much simpler fuel map system, rather than a full controller. I think a better solution would be someone who has an ODB2 interface to a head unit. That would be pretty cool, and almost all the data is available over ODB2.

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It has to send out a fuel light indicator, speed, engine speed, miles, engine codes and other basic info. People didn’t think Chief would work without the ride command so it’s an open idea at this point. The ECM is a different Bosch model so it wouldn’t work anyway but with enough effort anything is possible. Depends on whether it’s worth it.

  • @buddyweiser8508
    @buddyweiser8508 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t think it’ll work, as you said the ride command screen simply receives its info from the ECM on the chief. The ECM on the Chief is far more capable than the scout ECM. The scout ECM isn’t even capable of storing the mileage information, it depends on the scout speedometer for that. I do know however the while the scout ECM is not capable of storing the mileage, it is capable of cruise control. If Indian would just update the hand controls on the scout, you can pretty much be guaranteed the next iteration of scout hand controls, will allow cruise control. I’d also guess to say they may be able to sell the updated hand controls as another one of their expensive accessories, and make cruise possible on the older scouts.

    Somewhat off topic, I want to put the factory analog tach kit made for a Scout on my FTR1200 base model. The speedometers look identical however Indian doesn’t say it will work on FTR. I’m not worried about fitment, just wiring. The kit harness just plugs into the tach on one end and the diagnostics plug on the other. Any thoughts, looks like you know more than the average bear!

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว

    Are there any modern Indian bikes that have ride command, but also a physical key? I remember my Indian demo rides, all the bikes that had ride command had a fob without a physical key. • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ride command is just a display. It doesn't tell the ECM anything security related (to my knowledge). The WCM controls security and sends info to the ECM on whether a fob is present. If not, it displays the pin code screen (my assumption the ECM is sending that to show on screen). Remember, you can ride a Chief without the ride command screen so it's not required. If the fob is there, the WCM sends a signal to the ECM saying everything is good and to allow the fuel pump, etc. to go.

I do know you will probably have to splice wires on a Scout's wiring harness because the speedo harness isn't detachable like Chief. They both use a 16-in connector tho. If Scout's ECM says this is power, this is CAN etc. Matching it to the same connectors on the Ride Command can work. Dang I wish I had a Scout to try this on haha.

      @@BrandonBicasso exactly!!!!! 😉 I’m a brand new Chief Darkhorse owner in part because of you, partly because of the ride command option. Thank you for how you rock with the community.

    I will say it will not work, on any bike that was made in a year before the ride command came out. Consider the RC the "next gen". But who has $1800 to just throw at something that is unknown? Im sure the older ECU's don't have the data output the RC's need to work correctly.

      Yeah, I’m not sure. But, it’s all 1/0s so there’s always potential.

      Spend the $700 on the screen and splice your wires to find out. The point was explaining how it all worked.

    My GPS has been failing on my 22 chief. Does not do turn by turn it freezes up on the first turn and just buffers never working really frustrating. Have to pull over. Trying to figure out where I’m going. I’m gonna get killed because of it. Deep lose Indian!
